22 nd September, 2016 Page: 1 Dr. Harsh Vardhan Congratulates CSIR-CEERI on the Development Handheld GPS-Enabled Ksheer Tester CSIR-CEERI The Ksheer Tester will empower the common man with a technology to tackle a national level health hazard due to adulteration in milk, said Dr. Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Science & Technology and Earth Sciences. The Minister was addressing the media on the occasion of the 64th Foundation Day Celebrations of Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute (CSIR- CEERI) in Pilani today, where he presided over the event as the Chief Guest. Padmashri Prof. Sankar K. Pal, Former Director, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata was the Guest of Honour for the function. Dr. Harsh Vardhan, while appreciating the R&D achievements of the lab, specifically highlighted the Ksheer Tester, a newly developed handheld GPS-enabled version of the recently launched Ksheer Scanner technology to check adulteration in milk. The device, developed by the CSIR-CEERI, would enable any person to track the location of the tested sample and receive the test results through SMS on the device.

22 nd September, 2016 Page: 2 On this occasion, Dr. Harsh Vardhan delivered the Foundation Day address and presented Service Awards to staff members. He also released the Annual Report of CSIR-CEERI for the year 2015-16, the logo of the Institute and the CSIR-CEERI profile folder. The Minister inaugurated CSIR-CEERI foundation technology exhibition which demonstrated the technologies developed by CSIR-CEERI for dairy products, smart automated systems for water quality assessment, health care devices and strategic sectors such as Defense, Atomic Energy and Space. The Minister took keen interest in the R&D achievements of the lab in very high power Microwave tubes (Gyrotron, Travelling Wave Tubes (TWTs), Klystrons & Magnetrons), Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), sensors & nanotechnology, hybrid micro circuits, opto-electronic devices, Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI), instrumentation systems for societal needs such as water, milk etc., wireless sensor networks (WSN), Internet of Things (IoT), industrial electronics, image processing and electronic control systems.

22 nd September, 2016 Page: 3 Dr. Harsh Vardhan stressed on the necessity of building robust R&D infrastructure and promoting synergies between industry and research institutions for the implementation of Make in India programme of Government of India. The R&D output of the institute should match to the needs and expectations of the industry and our society so that the CSIR- CEERI can render appropriate state of the art technological services, he added. During the event, Prof. Santanu Chaudhury, Director, CSIR-CEERI, gave a presentation on the latest R&D achievements of the lab to the Minister. Heads of the local organizations, dignitaries of Pilani, the retired staff members of CSIR-CEERI and the media representatives attended the function. 22 nd September, 2016 Page: 4 Sugarcane waste yields carbon for use in batteries CSIR-NCL The results of the study were published on July 5 in the journal Electrochimica Acta ScienEsts used a low power microwave system to convert sugarcane bagasse into anode-grade porous, conduceng, acevated carbon material for use in Li-ion baleries. File photo shows a small farmer and his wife colleceng dry sugarcane wastes for their calle in Medak district of Andhra Pradesh. Photo: A. Roy Chowdhury Researchers from Pune s National Chemical Laboratory (NCL) and Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) have used a simple, cost-effective and quick process to convert sugarcane bagasse into anode-grade porous, conducting, activated carbon material for use in Li-ion batteries. While making anode-grade carbon is currently very expensive and time-consuming, the Pune researchers were able to produce high-quality carbon within minutes by using a low power microwave system. The results of the study were published on July 5 in the journal Electrochimica Acta.

22 nd September, 2016 Page: 5 The quality of carbon used for electrodes depends on the choice of precursors and the process used for converting the precursors into carbon. Anode-grade carbon is generally produced through decomposition at nearly 1000 degree Celsius. By using a simple kitchen microwave oven we achieved local heating and combustion to realise high quality factorygrade carbon materials within a few minutes, says Prof. Satishchandra Ogale, the corresponding author from the Centre for Energy Science at IISER, Pune and formerly Chief Scientist, NCL, Pune. The process time to get anode-grade carbon is cut down dramatically. The electrical energy input is also reduced substantially, Prof. Ogale says. R. 22 nd September, 2016 Page: 6 IIT-Indore, CSIR-CEERI ink MoU for research CSIR-CEERI In its endeavour to enhance research, Indian Institute of Technology, Indore has signed a MOU with CSIR-CEERI (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Central Electronics Engineering Research Institute), Pilani. The MOU has been signed for improving research collaborations between the two institutes, including exchange of scientific staff and students, joint supervision of Master s and PhD students, exchange of publications and materials, and organisation of research programmes and conferences, a release issued here by IIT-Indore said. CSIR-CEERI is a premier research institute in the field of electronics. The MoU was signed during a research workshop at IIT-Indore on September 16, said IIT-Indore media in-charge Nirmala Menon. She said that IIT-Indore director Pradeep Mathur and Prof Santanu Chaudhury (director, CSIR CEERI) inked the MoU. The focus of talks was to identify areas of mutual interests, and included presentations both from IIT-Indore faculty members as well as a four-member scientific delegation that accompanied Prof Chaudhury. As a first step, the collaborating groups have been asked to submit proposals for joint research soon. FPJ Bureau September 20, 2016

22nd September, 2016 Page: 7 Sanitation condition is poor around Taj: NEERI report CSIR-NEERI The status of solid waste management around Taj Mahal is extremely poor and costing its heritage value, says a National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) report. The study done by NEERI - Taj Mahal Tourist Impact Assessment and Carrying Capacity - revealed a very dismal picture of sanitary facilities around the monument. The report stated: "It is said that water is life and sanitation is dignity! This dignity is absent in Tajgang area." The report further stated that open burning and dumping of waste by Agra Municipal Corporation in the vicinity of the monument should be immediately stopped, as it is creating unhygienic and unhealthy conditions throughout and diminishing Taj's heritage value. During the study, the NEERI team found that waste generated around Taj includes household waste, and those from hotels, and restaurants. They are collected and disposed of by Agra municipal corporation. The expert team found major discrepancies in its handling. "It was observed that the waste collected was often disposed of in an uncontrolled dumpsites or burned, polluting water resources and the air. The municipal solid waste contains human and animal excrement as well as hazardous chemical pollutants and sharps," the report stated.
