EVALUATE YOUR ABILITY TO LEAD YOURSELF Welcome to the challenging journey of Leadership. You have chosen the road less traveled, and you are to be congratulated for taking this crucially important first step in a lifelong pathway of self-discovery. I admire you for stepping forward from the pack to make a worthy difference. You have made one of the wisest choices in your life: TO TAKE THE LEAD! When you are on the right path, moving in the right direction, you will achieve your desired results. It s only a matter of time until this sustained growth process results in your achieving more and more goals. The results of your growth plan lie in the consistency you apply to it. When you know you are consistently working your growth plan every day, every week, fifty-two weeks per year your confidence and personal pride increases, creating momentum that keeps you motivated and focused on the growth you desire. This type of living generates two kinds of respect respect from others who admire your discipline and self-respect. Thank you for going the extra mile, thank you for realizing the importance of leading yourself well, thank you for believing in your unlimited ability to make a positive difference, and thank you for investing in your most important commodity YOUR FUTURE. All My Best, Leyda Aleman, SHRM-SCP Founder & CEO, HCCI, LLC. 2018 Human Capital Consultants International All Rights Reserved www.hcc-intl.com. 3

EVALUATE YOUR ABILITY TO LEAD YOURSELF If you would not follow yourself, why should anyone else? Says John Maxwell. This answer was in response to those who say they want to move forward in their career, but they don t know how to get to the top. Often the frustration they feel is from the inaccurate belief that leadership comes simple from working in an organization long enough to have a powerful position or title. But nothing could be further from the truth. You don t need to possess a position at the top you need greater influence where you are or you will never make it to the top. Leaders should strive to be at the top of their game, not at the top of the organization. They need a plan to reach their potential not necessarily the corner office. This mini evaluation is designed for those who are in the middle-either by education level or life experience and desire more. Does that sound like you? Are you someone who knows how to influence others from whatever position you find yourself in? It doesn t matter what level a strong leader is within the organization they always make a difference and the difference is what s inside them. Sometimes leading from the middle will bring unusual difficulties. And others in the organization may drop out. So decide now whether you will quit like everyone else, or if you will stick with it. That one decision takes self-management. Nothing will make a better impression on leaders in your organization than your ability to manage yourself. If the leaders you report to continually expend energy managing you, then you will be perceived as someone who drains their time and energy. If you manage yourself well, however, your boss will see you as someone who maximizes opportunities and leverages personal strengths. 2018 Human Capital Consultants International All Rights Reserved www.hcc-intl.com. 4

They key to leading yourself well is to learn self-management. It is to manage your emotions and time well because you know and value yourself. Psychiatrist M. Scott Peck observed, Until you value yourself, you won t value your time. Successful leaders in the middle have time because they learned the secret to managing decisions instead of making them. Most people put too much emphasis on decisionmaking and too little on decision managing. As a result, they lack focus, discipline, intentionality and purpose. Successful people make the right decisions early in their career and then manage those decisions daily. They get to the point where they can focus their priorities this way: 80% of the time they work where they are strongest; 15% of the time they work where they are learning; 5% of the time they work in other necessary areas. Self-management is having the discipline to follow through with the rules you set for yourself. Novelist James Joyce said, Your mind will give you back to you exactly what you put into it. Successful leaders have learned how to take charge of their life today so they won t stay stuck in repetitive patterns from the past. You can change people s lives by becoming someone who ass value. You can learn to influence people at every level of the organization and by helping others, you always help yourself. That starts with your ability to lead yourself. As you do, influence goes up in the organization as does your value. The more valuable you are to the organization; the more leadership opportunities will come your way. 2018 Human Capital Consultants International All Rights Reserved www.hcc-intl.com. 5

PERSONAL GROWTH COACHING STRATEGY Leaders see their area as part of the larger process and understand how the pieces of the larger puzzle fit together. If you desire to be a better leader, then broaden your thinking and work at seeing things from a larger perspective. You must be able to answer the following questions. Take time to answer these important coaching questions to evaluate your ability to lead yourself. Don t rush. Be thoughtful. What areas of self-management do I need to give the most attention? How can I best prepare to impact my leaders and the rest of the team? 2018 Human Capital Consultants International All Rights Reserved www.hcc-intl.com. 6

Where do I fit in the organization and where do I want to go professionally? How could you challenge the leaders on your team to move from thinking, Why do we do it this way? to saying, Let s try this. Create a list of ideas and challenges that need some good mental processing or planning at a later time. 2018 Human Capital Consultants International All Rights Reserved www.hcc-intl.com. 7

Where can you go to have think-time? List your priorities according to the 80/15/5 principle. What strengths should occupy 80 percent of your time? 1. - 2. - 3. - 4. - 5. - What growth should occupy 15 percent of your time? 1. - 2. - 3. - 2018 Human Capital Consultants International All Rights Reserved www.hcc-intl.com. 8

FINAL THOUGHTS Lasting leadership is based on personal development, which starts with you pushing to reach your potential every day and having a coach to hold you accountable to expand your growth. Yet many leaders reach the corner office and think they can stop growing. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The reality is that when you stop growing, you begin to lose your influence as a leader. Your personal growth journey is unique to you because you were designed with a unique purpose. The idea that each of us has a unique purpose is a foreign concept to most people. Not only are they not clear about their purpose, they aren t confident about moving forward to develop greater leadership skills. Personal growth is a life-long journey which is lived out day by day. I learned the power of personal goal setting (with accountability) and goal achieving many years ago and it changed my life forever. Nothing great in this world has ever been accomplished without passion - Leyda Aleman There is no one in the entire world who is capable of setting your goals for you. If they try, and some will, do not permit it to happen. You will not commit yourself to other people s goals. You will be pleasing others and not yourself. 2018 Human Capital Consultants International All Rights Reserved www.hcc-intl.com. 10

FINAL THOUGHTS Your goal should be something you want, not something you need. There is no inspiration in needs; there is only inspiration in wants. There s only inspiration in passion and purpose your passion your purpose. Never forget leadership is about action and putting in practice what you learn. Don t let your knowledge lead to learning. Let your Learning Lead To Action. So if you re ready to take control of your growth, your life... then it's time to start. YOU are now in the driver s seat. Now you can make the impact that you really want. Put your time today and you will experience a better life tomorrow. So now it's your turn. Go get started. The time is now.
