554.05 MATERIALS 554.05.01 Concrete Concrete shall conform to OPSS 1350. The concrete shall have a compressive strength of 30 MPa at 28 days. 554.05.02 Granular The granular used for the granular pad shall be granular 'A' conforming to OPSS 1010. 554.05.03 Reinforcing Steel Reinforcing steel shall conform to OPSS 1440. 554.05.04 Metal Work All metal work shall conform to CAN/CSA G40.21-M. All welding shall conform to CSA W59-M. Following fabrication, all metal work shall be hot dip galvanized conforming to CSA G164-M. 554.05.05 Fasteners All bolts, nuts and washers shall conform to ASTM A 307, and shall be hot dip galvanized conforming to CSA G164-M. 554.05.06 Restraining Chains The restraining chains shall be 12 mm proof coil chain with a working load limit of 2040 kg. The chain shall be galvanized conforming to CSA G164-M. 554.05.07 Anchor Pins Anchor pins shall be made from C75x9 channels and shall be 775 mm in length. The steel channel shall conform to CAN/CSA G40.21-M. 554.05.08 Hex-Foam Cartridges The cartridge container shall be manufactured from cross linked polyethylene plastic with an average thickness of 2 mm. The bottom of the container shall be stapled in place with galvanized W18-1/2 staples. Handles shall be fastened on each end of the cartridge container. Hex-Foam material inside the container shall be protected by a polyethylene bag and a woven, debris containment bag. The hex-foam material shall consist of 28 pieces of 25 mm thick paper honeycomb material placed in an alternating cross-ply orientation. The honeycomb material shall have polyurethane foam filling within the honeycomb cell structure. 554.05.09 Diaphragms The diaphragms shall be made from standard 3.5 mm thick three beam guide rail. The length of each diaphragm shall be as required for each application. Two support legs shall be welded to the triple corrugated beam. Ski-shaped plates shall be welded to the bottom of the support legs. 554.05.10 Fender Panels The fender panels shall be fabricated from 3.5 mm thick three beam guide rail. Each fender panel shall be drilled and slotted conforming to the manufacturers specifications. Page 3 Rev. Date: 11/1989 OPSS 554

554.05.11 Nose Cover The nose cover shall be made from a cross-linked polyethylene plastic material. 554.05.12 Restraining Cable The Restraining cables shall be 22 mm diameter, 6x19 galvanized steel wire rope, capable of withstanding a load of 32,000 kg. 554.05.13 Deflector Panels Deflector panels shall be fabricated from 3.5 mm thick three beam guide rail and shall be drilled and shaped conforming to the manufacturer's specifications. 554.05.14 Transition Panel Transition panels shall be fabricated from 3.5 mm steel and shaped conforming to the manufacturers specifications. 554.05.15 Delineator Posts Delineator posts shall conform to OPSS 2007. 554.07 CONSTRUCTION 554.07.01 General The work shall include the installation of the Guide Rail Energy Absorbing Terminal on the required pad and including delineator posts when specified in the contract. The type of system, the number of bays, the required pad and delineator posts, for each installation shall be as specified in the contract. Hex-Foam cartridges shall be installed in both the permanent and temporary types of Guide Rail Energy Absorbing Terminals. 554.07.02 Permanent Guide Rail Energy Absorbing Terminal 554.07.02.01 Concrete Pad The 200 mm min. reinforced concrete pad shall be placed, cured and finished conforming to the applicable parts of Sections 904.06 to 904.11 inclusive of OPSS 904. Drilling of anchor holes shall not commence until a minimum period of five days have elapsed after concreting. 554.07.02.02 Granular Pad The GREAT system requires either a concrete or asphaltic pad constructed on a granular 'A' pad. The Contractor shall perform any minor site trimming prior to placing the granular A pad conforming to OPSS 314 and shall be compacted to a density of 95 percent of the maximum dry density. 554.07.02.03 Restraining Cable Permanent systems having four or more bays require a restraining cable. 554.07.02.04 Existing Concrete Pavement Permanent G.R.E.A.T. units may be installed on existing concrete pavements having a thickness of 200 mm minimum. 554.07.03 554.07.03.01 Asphaltic Concrete Asphaltic concrete shall be placed conforming to OPSS 310. The attenuator shall be anchored to the asphaltic concrete by steel anchor pins. 554.07.03.02 Restraining Cable A restraining cable shall be installed on all six bay temporary G.R.E.A.T. units. 554.07.03.03 Existing Concrete Pavement Where a temporary G.R.E.A.T. unit is to be placed on an existing concrete base the portable platform shall be anchored to a 150 mm minimum concrete pavement with anchor bolt conforming to the manufacturers instructions. 554.07.03.04 Portable Platform The temporary impact attenuator shall be positioned on top of a portable platform consisting of: Two parallel angles to which are attached the restraining chains and gusseted backup. Two parallel channels which support the attenuator during lifting and placement. A restraining cable which is rigidly secured at the front and rear of the platform on all six bay units. Eight lifting lugs for lifting the unit. 554.07.03.05 Salvage of Attenuators Following the removal of temporary G.R.E.A.T. units, all materials shall be relocated or salvaged and stockpiled, as specified in the contract. 554.07.04 Delineator Posts The delineator posts shall be located as specified in the contract. 554.09 MEASUREMENT FOR PAYMENT 554.09.01 Actual Measurement 554.09.01.01 Permanent Guide Rail Energy Absorbing Terminal The unit of measurement is each. 554.09.02 Plan Quantity Measurement 554.09.02.01 Permanent Guide Rail Energy Absorbing Terminal Measurement is by Plan Quantity, as may be revised by Adjusted Plan Quantity, for each complete installation. No additional measurement will be made for relocation of temporary installations. 554.10 BASIS OF PAYMENT 554.10.01 Permanent Guide Rail Energy Absorbing Terminal - Item - Item Payment at the contract price for the above tender items shall be full compensation for all labour, equipment and material required to do the work.
