Changes With respect to Energy efficiency 2006 Code is 22% better than 1997 Code 2012 Code 37% better than 1997 Code 2017 Code 60% better than 1997 Code By 2030 looking towards Net Zero 3

Code Changes For permits applied for after December 31 st, 2016 the following options are: Meet the performance level or Energy Star, R2000, or Comply to SB-12, Chapter 3 released July 7, 2016 (15% more efficient that 2012 SB-12) 4

Part 9 Residential Occupancy A building of Residential Occupancy and is intended for Occupancy on a continuous basis during the winter months. 5

Concept Concept is to increase the overall building efficiency including Stop the air movement through the building envelope Increased R values Increase equipment efficiencies As an entire system 6

Using Tables Building Envelope Walls including insulation, air barrier, vapour barrier, thermal breaks Doors Windows Ceiling insulations Space Heating requirements Domestic Hot Water Heating HRV 7

Prescriptive Requirements Choose space heating equipment (ie. high efficiency gas furnace) Choose a Table from 3.1.1.2 Table A space heating equipment with AFUE >/= 92% Table B space heating equipment with AFUE >/= 84%- 92% Table C Electric Space heating 8

Changes 6 columns verses 13 New tables have Normal R value U value Effective R value ci (continuous insulation) 9

Other Changes Wall and ceilings between a garage shall be treated as an outside wall Rim joist must have the same insulation value as the above grade walls R10 insulation required under slab where grade is 2 feet or less (still require full insulation is in-floor heating) All basement walls must have ci insulation, or meet the U value or effective value Glazing excludes the main door/entrance up to 20 sq. ft. All dwellings require an HRV or ERV 65% to 81% efficient Drain water heat recovery units are required Table B, C and zone 2 requires a 10 heal truss 17

Calculating Effective R-value There are two web pages that help in calculating effective R-value. The Canadian Wood Council has a wall thermal design calculator. http://cwc.ca/resources/wall-thermaldesign/ NRCAN has Tables For Calculating Effective Thermal Resistance Of Opaque Assemblies. http://www.nrcan.gc.ca/energy/efficiency/housing/ne w-homes/energy-star/14176#wa-2 27

Drain Water Heat Recovery 33

Drain Water Heat Recovery Required in all Dwellings and Dwelling Units, Minimum Efficiency 42% Must Connect to each shower DWHR are not required where: If no showers (bathtub only) If slab on grade or crawlspace beneath showers Conform to CSA B55.2 & be labeled as such 34

Drain Water Heat Recovery Center Section: open pipe large solids can pass easily Surface Tension: as water falls down a vertical drain pipe, it clings to the inner surface 35

Drain Water Heat Recovery 3 inch units are commonly used, but 2 inch and 4 inch units are also available DWHR unit(s) is/are installed in basement or wall of main floor for all installations 36

Installation: to Hot Water Tank and Shower 2 paths for warm water to reach shower from top of DWHR 37

Installation: to Hot Water Tank Connect fresh water from DWHR unit to water heater only 38

Installation: to Cold Side of Shower Connect preheated water connected to the cold side of shower only NOTE: To comply with SB-12, DWHR units can be connected in any of these three configurations. 39

DWHR Label Efficiency Must be >42% Must comply to CSA B55.2 40

DWHR July 2017 New building code amendment is scheduled for January 2017 one of the proposed changes is: Move Drain Water Heat Recovery from SB 12 to Part 7 (Plumbing) of the code. To take effect July 2017 This means that as of July 2017 all cottages will required DWHRs if there is plumbing in the building 41

Additions 42

Building Plans All building plans must have detail illustrating how the designer has designed the dwelling including Cross sections insulation Below slab Below grade Above grade Location of DWHR 43

Possible Change for 2018 EV Charging Rough-in probably mandatory Jan 1, 2018 60 amp Breaker + cable to junction box in garage 44
