STRATEGIC BUSINESS UNITS THE REHAU BUSINESS UNITS CONSTRUCTION AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY - Window and curtain walling technology - Building technology - Civil engineering - Exterior body parts - Water and air management systems - Seals - Furniture - Household appliances - Hoses/tubings - Industrial developments REHAU PBAU022 17.11.2008 Page 6

THE STRATEGIC BUSINESS UNIT CONSTRUCTION THE DIVISIONS Window and curtain walling technology REHAU supplies specialist companies in window and curtain walling construction with market-driven programs and services Building technology REHAU develops and produces integral and complete system solutions around the topics: heating/cooling, gas/water installation, industrial pipe/compressed air networks and electrical installation Civil engineering is an innovative system supplier for water management, energy management, communications engineering, earth moving and foundation work REHAU PBAU022 17.11.2008 Page 7

The three pillars of energy efficiency 1. Reducing Energy Losses: - High performance window, door and curtain walling systems 2. Efficient energy distribution: - Panel floor and wall heating - concret core activation - Panel wall and ceiling cooling 3. Provide renewable energies: - Geothermal for heating and cooling - Solar thermal for heating - Biomass/Biogas: heat and power production REHAU PBAU022 17.11.2008 Page 8

Material matters! 9000 Weakness of Polyethylen: slow crack growth Criteria : FNCT (full notch creep test) 8000 7000 6000 5000 FNCT nach ISO 16770 Result : PE100 fails after some hundred test hours No slow crack growth with PE-Xa! 4000 3000 2000 1000 0 2000 100 10 200 80 C 80 C 80 C PE 80 PE 100 PE-X REHAU PBAU022 17.11.2008 Page 11

Material matters! PE-HD failure mode: PE-Xa to be used for geothermal installations Major European Utilities use PE-Xa for Natural Gas and Water supply pipes! REHAU PBAU022 17.11.2008 Page 12

Material matters! Weakness of PE-HD: limited resistance to punctual loads Punctual load Stress distribution Resulting cracks PE-HD: Crack initiation at the inner surface adjacent to the puntual load Failure following slow crack growth PE-Xa is resistant to punctual loads! REHAU PBAU022 17.11.2008 Page 13

Material matters! Geothermal probes (vertical heat exchangers) are never postioned in the borehole center but always touch the borehole wall. Result: punctual loads! Additionally, significant temperature fluctuations resulting in heat pump cycles have to be taken into account. Resulting expansion forces: up to 800N (160 pounds)! bis 800N REHAU PBAU022 17.11.2008 Page 14

Engineering matters! State of the art: welded probe tip Joints always are potential failure sources Failures may happen even after pressure test : REHAU PBAU022 17.11.2008 Page 15

Engineering matters! RAUGEO probe PE-Xa one pipe, no joints utmost robust PE-Xa material slim polyester reinforcment of the probe tip - protection during probe insertion - cross-wise coupling for easy insertion - in-mould weight coupling With US IGSHPA approval (international ground source heat pump association) REHAU PBAU022 17.11.2008 Page 16

Material matters! PE-HD PE-Xa Excavated material mostly has a higher heat conductivity than sand Requires sand bedding Can be buried in excavated material REHAU PBAU022 17.11.2008 Page 17

Material matters! PE : to be used up to 100 F PE-X: to be used up to 200 F!. PE-Xa allows the save coupling of geothermal and solar thermal! Thermal regeneration of the soil by surplus solar heat No stagnation of the solar panels in case of full buffer tank REHAU PBAU022 17.11.2008 Page 18

Engineering matters: helical heat exchangers New REHAU products: Helical probe (if drilling is not permitted or if horizontal space is limited) REHAU PBAU022 17.11.2008 Page 19

Engineering matters: energy piles If pillars are required for static reasons anyway Current project: new main Berlin airport (1024 piles) REHAU PBAU022 17.11.2008 Page 20
