Outline CCOP at a glance The CCOP Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) Storage Mapping Program (CCS-M) Goal Expected Outcomes Program Implementation Work Plan

CCOP Coordinating Committee for Geoscience Programmes in East and Southeast Asia Since 1966

Vision Geoscience for a Sustainable Future Mandate To Promote and Coordinate joint applied geoscience programs for the sustainable development in East and Southeast Asian Countries

Sustainable Development: Development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Brundtland Report, 1987

CCOP BACKGROUND Established 1966 under UN ESCAP 1987 became Intergovernmental Organization (UN funding continued) 1991 full IGO Close link maintained with UN through ESCAP

CCOP Organization Member Countries: Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Lao PDR, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, & Vietnam Steering Committee Cooperating Countries: Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Russian Federation, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom & USA Advisory Group Cooperating Organizations Corresponding Organizations

CCOP CO 2 Storage Mapping Program (CCS-M) - a CCS capacity building program of CCOP

Why CCS? Emissions of GHGs continues to increase The world needs energy and fossil fuels continues to dominate the energy-mix. CCS is the only available technology that enables us to reduce emissions from the production and use of fossil fuels. IEA Technology Perspectives, 2012 9

Why CCS? IPCC Special Report, 2005

The 1 st part of the 5 th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - re-emphasized the urgent need of enabling a global transition to clean energy systems. According to IEA Every year that passes, scientific evidence for anthropogenic climate change increases, yet action to transform the way we produce and consume energy is slow. Energy accounts for twothirds of global greenhouse gas emissions and as such its role is central in tackling climate change.

Goals of CCS-M To enable government organizations in the CCOP member countries to provide a high level overview of the potential for largescale CO 2 storage.

Scope of CCS-M 1) Safe storage of CO 2 2) Possible use of CO 2 for increased recovery

CCS-M Outcomes Form a consensus on the methodology Enhanced capacity of member countries Development of the Atlas of CO 2 Storage in the CCOP region Facilitate the sharing of information & further collaboration Guidelines for National CO 2 Storage Mapping

CCS-M Implementation - in Cooperation with 2013 Facilitation Phase Training Courses & Seminars Development of Guidelines 2014-2016 2017 Case Study Phase 3 Case Studies Storage mapping CCS Atlas Development Integration of Storage Maps

CCS-M Case Studies Types of geological storage and trapping mechanism Criteria for selection of CO 2 storage sites Characterization of aquifers and structures Calculation of storage capacity GIS and metadata Use of CO 2 for EOR & others

CCS-M Training Courses and 2 training courses since the Program Launching: T1- Geological Storage characterization and T2- CO 2 storage capacity estimation methodologies Geological fieldtrips included Workshops

The CCS-M Guidelines will reflect the CCOP Member Countries consensus on the methodologies to be adopted.

Summary CCS-M will help push for the implementation of CCS in the CCOP countries. CCS-M s implementation is via case studies which has proven to be an effective capacity building strategy in CCOP. The CCS-M Guidelines is aligned to international standards and will be available to all Member Countries.
