Concrete Volute Pumps Proven Design With more than 70 years experience, Flowserve is a global leader in the design and manufacture of concrete volute pumps. These pumps have a well-earned reputation for trouble- free operation with minimal maintenance. A testament to their reliability is the years of continuous operation reported by customers worldwide. Pump Types BSV open, mixed flow impeller BCV closed, mixed flow impeller Typical Applications Incorporating many advanced construction features, these pumps offer advantages in large flow pump applications: Condenser cooling Water intake Irrigation Drainage Dry dock dewatering Cooling Water or Water Intake These services require pumps for continuous operation and adaptability to local conditions. The BSV type pump is typically applied on open or combined cooling water systems in power plants with river or sea source water. In closed systems such as cooling towers or where high head is needed, the BCV type is recommended. Drainage and Irrigation Concrete volute pumps were originally designed more than 80 years ago for drainage of polders, or reclaimed low-lying land protected by dikes. Today, these pumps are made of prefabricated concrete segments for the volute housing and intake suction bell. Pump assembly is integrated into the civil construction to reduce installation costs. Screens and specially designed valves provide pump and emergency protection. Complementary Pump Designs Submersible motor, bottom intake Wet pit, propeller, hi-flo Wet pit, propeller Overhung, ring section, multistage 3

Type BSV Type BCV Concrete Volute Pumps Construction A removable, metallic pump pull-out unit is within a concrete volute. Below the volute, the suction bell is connected to a preformed intake suction box. All are prefabricated concrete elements. A manhole permits impeller inspection without removal of the pump unit. Bearings and sealing systems are easily accessible via the space under the motor-gear support. Square volute discharge connection is designed into the discharge channel or connected to a discharge pipeline through a transition piece. The transition piece is grouted into the surrounding concrete of the pumping station. Pump pull-out unit is installed when civil work is done. Longer Mean Time Between Planned Maintenance (MTBPM) MTBPM of over five years is realized as no bearings are in contact with the water. The roller bearing inside the pump cover is designed for a lifetime of over 100 000 hours. Prefabricated concrete offers high corrosion and erosion resistance. Massive concrete pump construction substantially reduces noise and vibration. 4 Pump Pull-out Unit This unit consists of a pump cover utilizing a radial bearing housing and a bearing pedestal. These contain the top bearing housing with a spherical roller thrust bearing and a radial roller bearing. The spherical roller thrust bearing is oil lubricated and is provided with an oil level gauge; if necessary an oil-water or oil-air cooler can be applied. Both radial bearings are grease lubricated. The statically balanced impeller is flanged to the impeller hub, which is shrink fitted to the shaft. The Liquidyne shaft seal provides: Leak-free sealing Virtually maintenancefree seal Long life Increased pump reliability An inflatable static seal guarantees replacement of sealing lips and radial bearing without removal of the pump unit. Prefabricated Concrete Segments (off site) Benefits of off site prefabrication include: Production simplification Better quality control Dimensional accuracy Thorough inspection High quality concrete grade B35, environmental class 4 of VBT 1986 (NEN 5950) Sulfate resistant cement for protection against sulfate attack, alkali-aggregate reactions and chloride penetration in tropical seawater services Better site planning Facilitation of on-site construction activities These procedures allow efficient site planning plus: Time and cost savings of on site concrete work Reduced risks with Flowserve responsibility for: Construction of prefabricated concrete elements Supervision of on site concrete work Civil engineering calculations for the concrete pump and adjacent flow passages Advantages Over Wet Pit Pumps Concrete volute pumps offer these cost saving benefits when compared with wet pit pumps: Less excavation depth is required, due to the intake suction box design. Prefabricated Concrete Segments (on site) The prefabricated elements of the suction bell mouth are assembled, adjusted and then grouted with surrounding concrete as are the concrete elements of the pump volute casing. The pump casing volute is integrated with the civil construction of the pumping station. The prefab concrete volute elements for volute and suction bell do not require shuttering. Just-in-time delivery of the prefab elements reduces on site construction time. Simple outdoor assembly is possible, thereby avoiding costly roof constructions. Due to low cranage height and weight of the pump pull-out unit a mobile crane easily handles maintenance chores. Only pump cover and impeller are in contact with water. 5

Options and Technical Data Pump Drive Pumps may be driven directly or through a gearbox. In the latter case, the pump shaft is connected via two spacer type teeth couplings to the driver, thereby avoiding misalignment. The electric motor and the pump each has an axial thrust bearing.
