Demonstrating CCS in Italy The Enel s project Pietro Barbucci Enel - Engineering & Innovation Division EGTEI Meeting Rome, 7 th May 2010
A CCS demo plant in Italy Why In Italy Enel plans to built up to 5000 MWe clean coal capacity, substituting existing oil fired or NG fired steam cycles. Clean coal plant characteristics: Closed coal management system η = 45% extremely low pollutant (NOx, SOx; particulate) emission levels Torrevaldaliga Nord Power Plant (3 units, 2000 MWe) almost completed Next project of this kind is Porto Tolle These assets need to be preserved in the carbon constrained scenario CCS retrofit technologies required 2

ZEPT- Zero Emission Porto Tolle The Enel s s CCS demo project Project goal To retrofit one 660 MW e coal fired unit of Porto Tolle power station with CO 2 post Porto Tolle combustion capture equipment and start CO 2 underground storage in an off-shore saline aquifer by 2015 4
ZEPT- Zero Emission Porto Tolle Project time schedule Activities carried out in the frame of the EEPR Grant Agreement signed in December 2009 with European Commission 5
ZEPT- R&D Supporting Activities CO 2 capture pilot plant At the site of Brindisi coal fired power station a pilot plant for CO 2 separation via amine scrubbing is under commissioning. The plant is installed on the Unit 4. The plant is composed by a flue gas pretreatment section (able to remove completely the particulate and the SO 3 and to reduce SO 2 level below 20 mg/nm 3 ) and by a CO 2 separation unit Brindisi The plant size is 10.000 Nm 3 /h, capturing about 2,5 t/h of CO 2 Goal to: gain experience in CCU designing and operation, and assess the environmental impact of the process Unit 4 6

The Eni Enel Strategic Agreement on CCS On 21 October 2008, Eni and Enel signed a Strategic Cooperation Agreement to develop technologies for CO 2 capture, transport and geological sequestration and to accelerate the deployment of CCS. The goals of the cooperation program are: To build the first integrated pilot project in Italy combining the Enel s CO 2 post-combustion capture project in Brindisi and the Eni s pilot CO 2 injection project in an exhausted gas field at Cortemaggiore (Piacenza). To carry out a detailed feasibility study for the construction of a large scale integrated CCS demo plant for the Enel s Porto Tolle power station To jointly evaluate the CO 2 storage potential in Italy 10
The first integrated CCS pilot project in Italy The first Italian integrated CCS pilot project will be developed in the frame of the Eni - Enel cooperation agreement. It will include: CORTEMAGGIORE Capture Enel s post-combustion capture pilot plant in Brindisi in operation from mid-2010 and separating at least 5000 tco 2 /y Liquefaction CO 2 liquefaction and criogenic storage system to be built in Brindisi treating the CO 2 produced by the pilot capture plant Transport 230 trucks per year Storage ENI gas field in Cortemaggiore (Piacenza). Injection starting end 2010-start 2011. Total CO 2 injected: 24000 ton during three years. BRINDISI 11
Cortemaggiore pilot project Well Project in synthesis Roofing clay (300 m thickness) CO2 Injection Gas Deposit Injection of 24,000 tons CO2 in a sand level, at 1500 m depth, used for Gas storage since more than 40 years. Single Objectives of the test Field test verification of the forecasted behavior of injected CO 2 (e.g. plume evolution, pressure changes, injectivity). Define a methodology (both technical and authorization issues) for CO 2 injection. 12
ZEPT- R&D Supporting Activities CO 2 pilot pipeline Furthermore in the frame of the Eni - Enel cooperation a CO 2 pilot pipeline will be built in Brindisi. This will allow to collect experimental data to be used to: Validate design models (both stationary and dynamic) of the CO 2 transport line Optimize operating procedures CO 2 Capture plant 2,5 t/h Study corrosion problems related to the presence of impurities in the CO 2 stream Expected operation start in 2012 13

Financial challenges in demonstrating CCS 16
Financial feasibility of CCS demos The economic gap for a typical CCS demo project is of the order of 1b 17
Public funding assumptions for ZEPT demo A grant from the EEPR fund 100 M under the Grant Agreement signed in Dec. 2009 A substantial contribution from NER 300 fund Call for proposals expected by July 2010 A significant funding from Italian Government The Energy Law (99/2009) provides for economic support to CCS demos EU ETS auction revenues could be used 18
