a reciprocal relationship
D altile stands for beautiful design in every way possible. Because we believe the best design includes consideration for the environment, we have introduced Greenworks, a belief that we can design beautiful tile in ways that may also reduce environmental impact. Daltile Greenworks is more than just a compilation of our sustainability programs it s a company-wide philosophy, a commitment to help you design sustainable projects, without compromising your artistic vision. Part of that commitment is working with you to design and build within LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design).
W hy did you go green in the first place? Maybe nature inspires you. Maybe a client requested a LEED-certified building. Maybe it was a strategic business decision or simply your desire to provide a healthy, durable finished product. Whatever your reason, by working with Daltile and Greenworks, you ll be protecting the environment and promoting great design. You ll also be glad to know that our commitment to the environment goes deeper than just offering a product line that may help contribute to LEED certification. We ve made far-reaching, nature-friendly changes to our processes as well as our products: responsible design is part of our corporate philosophy. Daltile prevents millions of pounds of waste from other industry s manufacturing processes from entering landfills each year. We re reusing and recycling our own waste and wastewater, reducing our energy consumption, and using only natural raw materials that easily integrate back into the environment once their functional use is completed. We re also a member of the U.S. Green Building Council. Green isn t just part of our name; it s what we really are.

W hat is LEED? LEED is a set of guidelines for environmentally sustainable design and construction. This voluntary building certification program was established by the U.S. Green Building Council to give architects, designers and builders measurable environmental objectives. LEED uses third-party inspection and a rating system that assigns points to different aspects of a project to qualify and certify a building. Though the specific requirements vary, any project can qualify for LEED certification. H ow do I qualify for LEED credits? The are four levels of LEED certification: Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum. To earn LEED certification, a project must meet all prerequisites and earn the minimum number of LEED points, or credits, on the checklist. Credits can be earned in any of the following six categories: SS = SUSTAINABLE SITES Project utilizes the entire property, so the footprint is no larger than necessary. WE = WATER EFFICIENCY Project incorporates indoor and outdoor water conservation practices. EA = ENERGY & ATMOSPHERE Project incorporates elements of energy efficiency, particularly in heating and cooling. MR = MATERIALS & RESOURCES Project minimizes waste during construction, uses environmentally preferable materials efficiently. IEQ = INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY Project incorporates elements to improve indoor air quality by reducing possible air pollution. ID = INNOVATION & DESIGN PROCESS Project incorporates special design methods, unique regional considerations, and/or exemplary performance in one of the other categories.
H ow can Daltile Greenworks TM help? Daltile can help you earn credits in two of the six categories: MATERIALS AND RESOURCE CREDITS (MR) More than 97% of Daltile s manufactured products contain pre-consumer (post-industrial) recycled materials. Our multiple manufacturing facilities in the United States and Mexico provide the opportunity for our products and raw materials to be closer to more building projects, thus conserving fossil fuels required for transportation. Our cardboard and shrink-wrap packaging materials contain recycled materials, and all packaging can be recycled or reused, helping to minimize construction waste. INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY CREDITS (IEQ) Most tile glazes are water based and use minimal amounts of solvents. Once fired, the tile and glaze are completely fused and there is no possibility of emissions of volatile gasses. Our manufactured tile products have been tested and are compliant with the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) Low-Emitting Material Standard. For more information and to download the CHPs Low-Emitting Material Standard table, visit www.chps.net/manual/lem_table.htm#flooring. Not only does Daltile offer a wide range of beautiful, responsibly designed products, we also have tools and resources in place to make the process of seeking certification easier. Information on specific tile is available online, along with downloadable Material Safety Data Sheets. L ife-cycle Analysis While not specifically part of the LEED certification process, the life cycle of materials is increasingly becoming a consideration for eco-friendly projects. Because ceramic tile can last much longer than soft surfaces, it won t likely be replaced for decades. According to the Life Cycle Cost Study published by the Tile Council of North America, ceramic tile also costs less per year than all other floor finishes over the life of a building because of its longer useful life.
