07.01.2013: NEYVELI LIGNITE CORPORATION LIMITED, NEYVELI CSR and Sustainability Magazine January 2013 to March 2013. NLC launched a scheme JEEVIKA in the year 2012-13 for conducting self employment training programme in various vocational trades to the youth of peripheral villages. Hundreds of young men and women enthusiastically participated and acquired skill for Director(HR) presenting Driving License to a beneficiary. their livelihood through these training programmes. As a first step, NLC trained 60 youth from the peripheral villages to drive light and heavy motor vehicle, at a cost of Rs.2.25 lakh. A host of training programmes in other useful vocational skills were also started, subsequently. A function was organized at the Training Centre of B2-Block Rehabilitation Centre, Neyveli on 07.01.2013 and Shri Sarat Kumar Acharya, Director (Human Resource) participated as chief guest and distributed training certificates and driving licenses to the beneficiaries. At the same function, Shri Acharya inaugurated a new training programme in operating earth moving equipments for 15 peripheral youth and. Senior officials of NLC participated in that concluding session and interacted with the participants. 10.01.2013: As a CSR initiative, Shri B. Surender Mohan, CMD, NLC laid foundation stone to construct a meeting hall at Alambadi - Mettur village, an agricultural hamlet of Trichy District on 10.01.2013. The meeting hall with the plinth area of 1350 sq. feet will be constructed at a cost of Rs. 15 lakh. In his address, CMD said that it is the first time NLC is extending its CSR initiative to the place other than the peripheral villages of Neyveli. He felt happy about the Self Help Groups of CMD and VIPs at the foundation stone laying ceremony women who are working for the empowerment and development of the village and assured to present utensils for the hall. He lauded the efforts of Shri N.Jayaprakash, Member, Regional Coal Consumer Committee, who had taken efforts for the Meeting Hall. Shri N.Jayaprakash, thanked NLC for the help extended to his Village. Officials from NLC, and public in large number participated in the function. The hall can be utilized by the villagers for social gathering and family functions. 1
21.01.2013 As part of Jeevika Scheme, training programme on manufacturing pre-cast building materials using cement and fly- at Neyveli ash was organized Pre-casting Yard was conducted between 21.01.2013 and 01.02.2013. 15 persons from Kammapuram, Umangalam and Precast Building Materials Training Programme at the Pre-casting Yard Managadhi Villages were benefitted through this programme. NLC Officials distributed the Certificates to the participants at a function held at NLC Employee Development Centre. 01.02.2013 The impact assessment study of CSR Projects undertaken by NLC in Iruppu village was conducted from 23.01.2013 by Engaging M/s. Madras School of Social Work. The Impact Assessment Report was submitted by them on 01.02.2013. They have observed that NLC need to be highly complemented for the various initiatives and comprehensive measures under their CSR with holistic approaches for inclusive socio-economic development. they have further observed that, the firm will and commitment of NLC s top management and the collaborative efforts of their project monitoring team in translating NLC s Socially oriented plan-objectives into desired and expected outcomes in the immediate run and measurable impacts in the long run is noteworthy. 20.02.2013 As part of Jeevika Scheme, Self employment training programmmes in vocational trades like electrician, welding, tailoring, catering and computer education to the youth of The inaugural function of further programmes under Jeevika Scheme peripheral villages were inaugurated by NLC Officials at a function held at NLC Employee Development Centre on 20.02.2013. 55 men and 55 women belonging to the villages of Kathazhai, Mummudicholagan, Gangaikondan, Kolliruppu and Periyakurichi, were the participants of the training programme, organized at a cost of Rs.8 lakh. Institutional support for the programme was obtained from Virudhambikai Industrial Training Centre, Vridhachalam, a Govt. of India recognized institution. Each training session had a time frame of 40 days. In addition to imparting the training in the selected trades, NLC presented Rs. 3000/- as incentive to each participant. 04.03.2013: 4 th March 2013 was a day of events in the history of NLC s CSR. Rs.30 laks for the Government Higher Secondary School Building in Iruppu Village of Cuddalore District on 04.03.2013. In his address, CMD highlighted the salient features of the scheme 'VETTRI KANI KITTUM' organized by NLC for 10th and 12th Std. students of peripheral villages. He added that 2708 pupils from 14 schools have been benefitted through this programme. CMD appreciated the colourful cultural programme presented by the students and announced a cash prize of Rs. 20,000/-. The Head Master of the school expressed his gratitude and recalled the facilities provided earlier by NLC to the same school and village, which include extension of medical services through NLC Arogyaa Camps project, drilling of Bore-wells in the year 2001 and 2011 and construction of two class rooms in the year 2002. AROGYAA, is a health care system initiated by NLC under corporate social responsibility scheme. A free medical camp under this scheme was organised by NLC at Sorathur village on 04-03-2013, through Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences(PIMS) and Neyveli Blood Donor s Association. Specialists from various departments, Doctors and para medical team attended to screening and diagnosing of around 500 people in different age groups. Shri CMD and Director(HR) at the Arogya Camp, Sorathur B.Surender Mohan, CMD, NLC with functional Directors visited the Camp and interacted with Doctors, general public and NLC officials for improving the service for the benefit of the people in peripheral villages. This scheme was initially inaugurated on 15-09- 2012 at Keezhur village, near Neyveli. Smt. Kalpana Bharathidasan, President, Sorathur Panchayat Union also participated. Till 04.03.2013, around 11,500 people belonging to 23 neighbouring villages have been benefitted. Of which, 133 beneficiaries were referred to PIMS for follow up treatment at subsidized cost with accommodation and food, free of cost. 13.03.2013: NLC has initiated a Sustainable Development project on Sequestration of Carbon di-oxide (CO 2 ) and Production of Bio-fuel from Flue Gas of Thermal Power Plants. To effect the effort, NLC entered into an MoU with the Pondicherry Engineering College for a R & D Project on 13.03.2013 at Neyveli. This MoU was entered under Industry Institution collaborative mode with a time duration of 4 years and the projects will be executed at a cost of 3
Rs. 89 Lakh. This event places a milestone on the sustainable development strategies of NLC, towards attaining National goal on removal of CO 2 from flue gas by algal cultivation. Subsequently, the algae will be converted into bio-fuel for use in Thermal Power Stations with the aim of conservation of conventional fossil fuel. This project is first of its kind in India on the development of a Shri R. Kandasamy and Dr. D. Govindarajulu, exchanging the MoU pilot-scale algal photo bioreactor for sequestration of CO 2 from flue gas. This project also includes direct utilization of municipal sewage & ultimate production of biofuel for the use in Thermal Power Plant. The outcome of the project would benefit in reducing carbon foot prints and would attain the National perspectives of climate change, clean technology, environmental, energy conservation, renewable, biomass energy drive. The project of such nature would lead to a long sustainable potential energy future and would balance the fast depleting onventional energy resources of India and at the same time can tackle climate change, which is threatening the globe. G o v i n d a r a j u l u, P r i n c i p a l, Pondicherry Engineering College PEC), signed the MoU in the presence of Shri S.Rajagopal, Director / Power, NLC and Shri S.Muthaiyan, CGM/Management Services, NLC. Dr.R. Saravanane, Associate Professor,Civil Engg. Dept, PEC, and Dr M.Velan, Chief Manager, Corporate Environment Cell, NLC, the Principal Investigators of the project were also present during the occasion. 22.03.2013: Shri R. Kirlosh Kumar, Collecto,r Cuddalore, lighting the traditional lamp at the inauguration of Maternity Centre. Shri B. Surender Mohan, CMD, NLC in the august presence of Shri R. Kirlosh kumar, I.A.S, District Collector, Cuddalore inaugurated a new Maternity Block at Primary Health Centre (PHC) Vadalur on 22.03.2013. This building, constructed by NLC at a cost of ` 48 lakh has a plinth area of 3645 sq.ft. comprising of Labour Ward, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Dentist Room, Scan Room, Sanitation Facilities, Waiting Hall and Rooms for Doctors, Nurses and Paramedical staff with sufficient common area. Vadalur being a well connected place, this 4
Maternity Block would serve the health care needs of about 30,000 people of Vadalur Town and people from the surrounding villages. On the same occasion, CMD launched the newly formulated CSR Project POSHAK, a scheme which feeds specially prepared nutritious food items to HIV affected children of Cuddalore District. This scheme would be provided by NLC with an expenditure of `11 lakh per year. About 270 HIV affected children of Cuddalore District will be benefited by this project. NLC distributes the nutritious food items to the beneficiaries through the Cuddalore District HIV Positive Society. --**-- 5
