Atlantic Treatment Plant Combined Heat and Power (CHP) February 1, 2017
Presenter Rick Raike Chief of Electrical and Energy Management 2
Outline This presentation will provide a brief discussion of the CHP in the following areas: Provide an overview of the CHP system Discuss what the CHP does for HRSD Discuss what the CHP does for the environment Investigate some of the challenges with implementation Investigate some of the ongoing challenges Discuss a forward path with the CHP 3
What Is HRSD? HRSD is a regional wastewater treatment agency that serves 17 counties and cities. 4
What Do We Do? We clean the wastewater that is created to protect public health and the waters of Hampton Roads. 5
Why Do We Do It? For Everybody! 6
Where Do We Do It? The Atlantic Treatment Plant in southeast Virginia that can treat up to 54 million gallons of wastewater every day. 7
Where Location Do We Do of It? Two Cummins, 1100 kilo-watt methane engine driven generators The Atlantic Treatment Plant in southeast Virginia that can treat up to 54 million gallons of wastewater every day. 8
Atlantic Treatment Plant CHP Project Information The Atlantic Treatment Plant produces enough methane to power one 1100 kw, methane engine driven generator. A second generator is alternatively run to allow engine maintenance and to maintain lower demand costs. Cost of project $9.1 Million -$1.2 million grant, -$1.8 million low interest loan -Green energy Gas consumption 180 SCFM kwhrs produced 7,200,000 Environmental Benefits: Remove Methane, Sulfur, CO 2 9

Challenges Stabilize the system Find the optimum operation Peak shave vs base load Meet regulations, NOx, CO MTBO, 15,000 hours Oil changes, spark plugs, head replacement Maintaining Gas efficiency, 600 BTU at 60% Injecting Fertilizer Metering Engines shutting down 25
Summary Good to implement this project Overcoming the electrical and mechanical challenges Currently meeting the regulatory challenges Right thing to do for the environment Starting to look at renewable energy credits Look at the other benefits 26
27
Future Opportunities FOG Thermal Hydrolysis Process (THP) will use a process to pulverize the solids and give HRSD an energy neutral opportunity to provide: Additional digester capacity and additional gas Class A solids Opportunities Other plants can efficiently dispose of their solids allowing us to: Run two or three methane gas engine generators 28
29 The CHP s are an opportunity that allows HRSD to convert waste into fertilizer and power.
