SUNSCOOP TUBULAR ROOFLIGHTS New Glidevale Sunscoop rooflights bring natural daylight into dark areas where normal windows or rooflights cannot be used. The highly reflective tube guides daylight from the roof dome through the roof space to where it is required in a room below. Proven benefits of natural light Scientific studies have shown the positive benefits of natural daylight. For example it can promote faster recovery of hospital patients and better performance by factory workers (references available from Glidevale Technical Services). The Sunscoop system The Sunscoop system comprises a polycarbonate dome connected to a highly reflective tube which runs down (through a roof space if required) to a ceiling diffuser in the room where daylight is wanted. Advantages Ideal for bathrooms, stairways, corridors and other dark spots. Wide range of applications - houses, flats, schools, hospitals, commercial and industrial buildings. Light can be efficiently ducted to remote areas. Energy saving - cuts the need for artificial lighting. Can be used on pitched and flat roofs. Wide range of purpose-designed roof interface flashings to suit most roof coverings Simple and reliable installation. Complete system meets the thermal requirements of the latest building regulations. Adjustable elbows give flexibility of siting. Building Regulations New Building Regulations (England and Wales) Parts L1 and L2 came into force in April 2002. The corresponding new Approved Documents require a U-value of 2.2 W/m 2 K for all rooflights. Glidevale Sunscoop rooflights, with doubleglazed roof dome and ceiling diffuser trapping air within the tube, meet this requirement (with the addition of Thermafoil insulation in an unheated space). Low sun deflector (LSD) maximises capture of lowincidence sun. 300mm long starter tube passing through the roof thickness. Offset elbow adjustable up to 30 for flexible installation. Double glazed dome combines maximum light transmission with safety, fire performance and thermal insulation. Dome assembly is mounted on a purposedesigned roof flashing. Intermediate 600mm lengths of tube duct the light down to the ceiling diffuser. Elbow straight and at full adjustment Thermafoil insulation to meet building regulations where the tube passes through a cold space. Bottom adjustable elbow. Ceiling diffuser provides maximum even light spread. Range of options. (Glidevale Thermafoil insulation and loft insulation omitted for clarity)
...... COMPONENTS Glazing dome The innovative roof-mounted double-glazed dome is manufactured from 3.0mm clear UVstabilised polycarbonate with a 10-year postformed warranty. The clear polycarbonate secondary skin has integral concentric light shelves which enhance the light passage. The dome and flashings have been impact tested to EN 1873: Modular Rooflights and may be deemed to be non-fragile for HSG 33 Safety in Roofwork. The polycarbonate has an AA fire rating and units can therefore be used without restriction on number and spacing. Low sun deflector The dome incorporates an innovative low sun deflector (LSD) between the glazing skins which intercepts low-incidence sunlight and reflects it down the mirror tube. This significantly increases daylight output at the ceiling diffuser. Low sun deflector (LSD) Secondary concentric light shelves skin Dome Tube and elbows The aluminium tube and elbows are coated internally with a high-performance specularreflective, silver mirror-like film giving 95% reflectivity. The coating surface will not oxidise over time (unlike polished aluminium). It also provides a softer, more natural light than similar products, not the harsh blues and greys produced by some aluminium tubes. Tubes and elbows push-fit together. Sizes Tube diameter: 250mm, 350mm or 530mm. Starter tube length: 300mm. Intermediate tube lengths: 600mm. Can be cut as required on site. Elbow length: 200mm for 250 and 350mm system, 300mm for 530mm system. Adjustment up to 30 to direct the tube towards the ceiling diffuser. Glidevale Thermafoil insulation Specifically designed to contribute to the overall thermal performance of the system, Thermafoil is a multi-layer air bubble film insulation with a low emissive aluminium foil encapsulated in polyethylene to both faces. All exposed tube and elbows within unheated voids such as loft spaces should be lagged with Thermafoil to reduce heat loss and the risk of condensation within the tube. The insulation is wrapped around the Sunscoop tube and taped in place. Circular ceiling diffuser The standard recessed ceiling diffuser for all tube sizes. Manufactured from diffused polycarbonate with white-capped ABS ceiling ring to hide fixings, it is designed to maximise light transmission. Its translucent surface with concentric light shelves provides privacy, and spreads the light efficiently throughout the room. Skyview diffuser, circular Optional for all tube sizes. The innovative Skyview diffuser consists of a grid of fresnel lenses which provides a wider spread of light without excessive losses, and enables the sky to be viewed. Skyview diffuser, square Optional for 350mm and 530mm tube sizes. Similar to the circular Skyview but mounted in a 600 x 600mm polycarbonate panel which can be fitted in a suspended ceiling....
...... COMPONENTS... Universal Top on pitched roof with site-fabricated upstand (250mm) Roof interface flashings The Universal Top flashing, which requires a site-fabricated upstand, is suitable for all types of pitched and flat roof. Special flashings are available for most interlocking tiles, plain tiles and slates, see table below for availability. All flashings are manufactured from fireretardant ABS giving an AA fire classification when tested to BS 476: Part 3, and are treated with UV-stable polymeric resin. Standard tile colours: Red, Brown, Grey, Terracotta, Red Streak. Slate colour: Blue/black Colour-matching to specific roof tiles/slates and other types of flashing to special order. SYSTEM DESIGN Vertical system Maximum offset Layout The Sunscoop tubing can pass through a roof space or another room. For maximum effectiveness it should be as straight as possible. Since it is often impractical to site the ceiling diffuser directly below the dome, the tubing system allows an offset by means of two elbows, adjustable up to 30 from vertical. There should be no other bends or offsets in the tubing. Siting on roof Where possible the dome should be on a south-facing slope to gain the maximum natural light throughout the day. The low sun deflector (LSD) should be turned to face due south to make maximum use of low-incidence autumn and winter sun. If siting on a North facing slope is unavoidable please contact our Technical Services Team for advice in positioning of the LSD device. Factors which need to be considered when siting the Sunscoop include: - Location of the room to be lit, and suitable position of the ceiling diffuser - Roof space obstructions - Proximity of other buildings, trees etc which may cast shadows at certain times of the day or year. Tube length Leading independent research by Nottingham and Napier Universities indicates that the maximum practical length for rooflights using specular reflective tubes is around 10 times the tube diameter. This will provide sufficient daylight for task lighting assuming bright external conditions. Maximum recommended lengths for Sunscoop systems are: Tube diameter (mm) 250 2.5 to 3.0 350 3.5 to 4.0 530 5.5 to 6.0 Maximum length(m) Whilst daylight would be visible at greater lengths, it would not be considered usable for task lighting; it may nonetheless be desirable to complement artificial lighting. The Sunscoop LSD device increases the amount of useful daylight when the sun is low. The option of a Skyview diffuser will also increase the effectiveness of daylight delivered by the system. Integral electric light fitting option The Sunscoop can be supplied with an integral electric lighting fitting with 13W fluorescent low-energy lamp (equivalent to a 65W conventional lamp). This avoids the need for an additional light fitting for night-time use. pm am LSD Sunscoop Sun track Usable roof slopes
