a pioneering & a a vibrant science & technology company We are Merck a leading science and technology company working in healthcare, life science and performance materials. From the screen on your smartphone or the colour of your car, to clean air solutions and cancer medicines Merck s ideas are everywhere. We re rooted in science and innovative research, and we are energised by a passionate curiosity about the world around us. Founded in Germany in 1668, Merck is the world s oldest pharmaceutical and chemical company. We have a significant presence in the UK, having been active here since 1883. Over 1,400 employees work in 14 UK locations across the entire operational spectrum, from research and development (R&D) to manufacturing, distribution, sales and marketing. Merck supplies the pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology companies, research institutes and academic centres with innovative devices, tools, laboratory supplies and testing services. We conduct cutting-edge research in advanced materials which will form the basis of the devices and technology of tomorrow. The UK is home to much of our pioneering healthcare R&D, with clinical trials in oncology, neurology and immunology and fertility progressing across approximately 70 centres. Even with our considerable growth, the founding family remains the majority owner of the company and that family heritage anchors our ethical approach to our employees, our partnerships, the environment and the wider world.

invention is our passion Our goal is to help improve and prolong life and to drive innovation in science and technology to make a lasting difference for patients and consumers. Healthcare (Biopharma and Consumer Health) From ground-breaking treatments for conditions including cancer, multiple sclerosis (MS), diabetes and infertility to over-the-counter products to protect everyday health, we help millions of people take care of their health every day. Life Science We re constantly pushing the boundaries of knowledge and discovery by supplying the pharmaceutical industry, biotechnology companies, research institutes and academic centres with innovative devices, tools, chemicals and reagents, testing services and the expertise that make scientific breakthroughs possible. We conduct cutting-edge research in advanced materials which will form the basis of the devices and technology of tomorrow. Our ideas are driving advances in consumer electronics, printing technology and solar energy solutions, as well as high-tech chemicals in the plastics, cosmetics and food industries.

HEALTHCARE Leading innovation in healthcare Our healthcare work spans personalised solutions for unmet medical needs through to household name over-the-counter brands. Merck Biopharma - Prescription Medicines and Services Our key therapy areas of focus are neurology and immunology, oncology and fertility where we strive to develop new treatment options and drug delivery devices. We offer enhanced patient programmes and support services that provide ongoing care for patients beyond their treatment. For example, our devices make it possible for people with MS to self-inject their medication, meaning fewer trips to the hospital. We are also leading the way globally with our approach to personalised medicines here in the UK by supporting the NHS to tailor the right cancer medicines for patients, helping to achieve better outcomes for patients and for the NHS. Merck Consumer Health - Everyday Wellbeing We provide consumers with over-the-counter products for everyday wellbeing. Our flagship brands Seven Seas, Nature s Best, Haliborange and Lamberts have become an integral part of the UK consumer s healthcare routine for over 80 years. Through scientific research, an innovative product pipeline, consumer education and state-of-the-art manufacturing processes, Merck Consumer Health will continue to meet the vitamin supplementation needs of the UK public. Investing in Health We are committed to continued investment in the UK healthcare sector: We currently have 20% of our global healthcare venture capital invested in the UK. During 2017 we are investing 8.5m in early health research collaborations in partnership with leading institutions across the country.

LIFE SCIENCE delivering vital solutions With 10 sites spanning the UK, Merck s Life Science business consists of world class life science expertise with one mission of providing products, services and solutions to help tackle the world s toughest problems. In the UK, as part of Merck s global supply chain, our Gillingham site ships out more than 1.9 million units of products (from our portfolio of more than 300,000 products) to make research and biotech production easier, faster and more successful. Our Haverhill site is the European Centre of Excellence for oligo manufacturing and we are the UK s number one supplier of DNA molecules for research. Our products helped decode the first human genome. Scotland is a powerhouse for Merck: - Our sites in Glasgow and Stirling are the leading biosafety testing providers to the biotech and pharmaceutical industry, providing critical data that support the safe release of cutting-edge medicines to patients. - The Irvine facility produces cell culture media and reagents in both liquid and powder form for supply globally to academic and research institutions, and the healthcare industry. Customers are offered a high level of customisation for specific needs through formulation, packaging and release testing. - Our Livingston site is a Centre of Excellence for the production of monoclonal antibodies for blood typing. Some 72 million blood typing tests are performed annually in the US, Europe and Japan and, of these, 65% use antibodies manufactured in Livingston.

PERFORMANCE MATERIALS revolutionising the everyday We are discovering, creating and producing revolutionary performance materials, devices and applications that will bring ingenuity to the products we use every day now and in the future. Merck s Advanced Technologies Innovation Hub in Chilworth, Southampton, is leading ground-breaking research on advanced materials for state-of-the-art display technology and future electronics. The site invests some 10m per year into R&D in the UK. Much of Merck s global success and ambition in performance materials is underpinned by technology developed in Chilworth including: A world-leading supplier of liquid crystals which Merck UK was instrumental in developing in the 1970s, in partnership with British academics. Every smartphone in the world contains Merck materials and we continue to invest in liquid crystal research today. A world-leading producer of the next generation of hybrid electronics technology giving flexible, cheaper and printable electronics that will underpin the growth of the Internet of Things. Applications of this technology include robust plastic flexible displays, sensors for wearable health technologies which monitor and track patient progress, and advanced security applications such as fingerprint sensors. The next generation of solar photovoltaic technology, which converts light to electricity. It s totally flexible and lightweight and can be integrated into new buildings as part of the architectural design.

Taking responsibility globally... In fulfilling our corporate responsibility, we focus our strengths on those areas where we can achieve the most, namely health, environment, culture and education. We have been donating a medicine for the treatment of schistosomiasis to the World Health Organization (WHO) for distribution in Africa for 10 years more than 500 million tablets to date. These donations have allowed 100 million children in Africa to be treated for this neglected tropical disease. Through our US programme, we have initiated over 400 measures to reduce our impact on the climate, such as recycling 450 metric tonnes of single use products. Our ethos is centred on a culture of inclusion and diversity to foster better team performance and greater innovation. Worldwide, we currently employ people from 129 different countries and 43% of our workforce are women.

...and locally Our strong global responsibility focus is no different in the UK, where our commitment is clearly demonstrated through highprofile education programmes and partnerships spanning schools and universities through to industry internships. Since 1994, Performance Materials has run a Collaborative Awards in Science and Engineering (CASE) Conference bringing together Merck scientists, university researchers and their PhD students to facilitate the exchange of ideas and results. Over this time, Merck has partnered with 35 universities in CASE studentships, sponsored 120 students and provided 2.9m of funding. At school level, Merck s Gillingham Life Science site recently sponsored Gillingham School s team to attend the Big Bang awards to encourage more young people into careers in science. Our volunteering programme, SPARK, at our site in Glasgow received the Scottish Life Science Award in 2017 for its Community Engagement programme. Staff volunteer their time and expertise to deliver science lessons to more than 1,250 local students in the Glasgow and Stirling areas, inspiring young people to explore science-related careers. Through our Feltham site we operate a growing graduate and internship programme. These placements provide graduates with the opportunity to gain business acumen across a range of disciplines which is required for a career within the healthcare industry.

shaping the future Vibrant science and technology never stands still. Globally, over 6,000 Merck researchers are dedicated to discovering pioneering health solutions and developing new technologies, such as: SmartFlare RNA probes which can identify the genes that control the activity of living cells in real time. This opens up exciting possibilities for studying the origin and treatment of diseases. Our ongoing research into liquid crystals, where we re discovering ground-breaking new uses for the technology in areas as diverse as cataract surgery, the production of temperature-regulating windows and use in displays where they can help smartphones and tablets save power, so enhancing the sustainability footprint of our products. Our involvement in CODE, a collaborative project aiming to provide clearer and more proactive insight into the use and success of anti-cancer treatments in a real-world setting to help improve oncology patient care. Our wealth of experience is a firm foundation for future discovery and we ll never stop exploring, inventing and challenging the status quo for patients and customers worldwide.
