Animal Care Specialist ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW The Almost Home Humane Society (AHHS) is a 50l(c)3 nonprofit organization. AHHS contracts with the cities of Lafayette and West Lafayette to provide' animal sheltering services for stray pets from those municipalities. In addition to sheltering, stray pets, Almost Home cares for those pets that are lost, unwanted or in need of sanctuary. POSITION SUMMARY Animal Care Specials provide daily care for the pets at Almost Home, as well as customer service to AHHS visitors. This position may include tasks such as cleaning, answering phones, performing basic medical duties, assisting adopters and utilizing the PetPoint database. MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS Daily cleaning may include but is no limited to: ensuring public areas of the shelter are sanitary and free of clutter, cleaning dog and cat kennels and cleaning small mammal/bird/reptile cages Providing helpful and friendly customer service to both visitors, volunteers and partner organizations in person and via the phone Basic data entry and operations within PetPoint database including but not limited to: adoptions, intake of stray and owned pets, foster care procedures and lost/found reports Maintain a commitment to continually improving job knowledge regarding behavior, health and customer service through monthly staff training opportunities and on the job opportunities Be vigilant in watching pets for signs of illness, changes in behavior or appetite and any other details, which may be utilized to promote adoption (housebreaking, tricks, etc.) Provide leadership and a welcoming environment to AHHS volunteers which may include: training volunteers in basic job duties, greeting new volunteers and making them feel welcome, assisting volunteers in finding tasks Implantation of microchips Other tasks as assigned SKILLS/ABILITIES/KNOWLEDGE High school diploma or equivalent required Ability to lift 50 lbs. Knowledge of basic dog and cat breeds and behaviors Previous experience working in an animal related field is preferred Previous customer service experience is preferred Cleaning involves working with multiple chemicals including bleach Valid Driver's License required To apply send resume and application to canines@almosthomehumane.org.

Part of our responsibility is educating the public on the problems of pet overpopulation and animal welfare. Please state your feelings on the subject. Continuous cleaning and disinfecting of the kennels, shelter, and offices is necessary daily to ensure the health of the animals and to keep up the appearance of the shelter. This includes cleaning soiled kennels and litter boxes which could lead to you getting very dirty. Are you willing to accept this as part of your job?
