Revision Date: 2018-08-06 Stand Examiner: Rankin Smith Legal Description: T48N-R22W, section 35. Identified Planning Goals: Habitat/vegetation and mixed use. Compartment Review Presentation Gwinn Forest Management Unit Compartment Entry Year Acreage: County 32297 2020 202 Alger Management Area: Sand River Lake Plain Soil and topography: Soils range from poorly drained loams to dry course sands, to organic mucks and peats. Topography is mostly level with some slight hills. Ownership Patterns, Development, and Land Use in and Around the Compartment: This compartment is surrounded by private ownerships. Land use is primarily for forest production and passive recreation. Unique Natural Features: The Laughing Whitefish River, a well known trout fishery, flows through the length of this compartment. Wet land habitats are diverse in this tract. Archeological, Historical, and Cultural Features: The abandoned town of Tyoga, one of the original white pine logging communities dating back to 1906, is contained in this compartment. The town site with its associated sawmill and logging camp have been developed as a historical interpretation facility. The Tyoga trail with interpretive stations is developed to review the history of the area. Special Management Designations or Considerations: The entire compartment is designated Special Conservation Area to preserve its historic values. Watershed and Fisheries Considerations: Fisheries Values: Good Fisheries Concerns: The Laughing Whitefish River flows through most of this compartment and is a designated trout stream with native Brook Trout present and a spring run of steelhead. As much of this compartment is under factor limits for many reasons and no treatments are proposed for this year of entry, Fish Division has no concerns at this time. Wildlife Habitat Considerations: Compartment 297 is found within the Sand River Lake Plain Management Area; on a Till-floored Lake Plain in northeastern Marquette County. The dominant Natural Communities are mesic northern forest and poor conifer swamps. Major forest cover types include Northern Hardwoods, Aspen, and Hemlock. Wildlife species considerations in the Sand River Lake Plain Man include managing to provide coniferous thermal cover for deer wintering complexes. The emphasis should be on hemlock in this management area as it represents approximately 20% of the WUP hemlock resource. Along with maintaining wildlife movement corridors along vernal and permanent riparian watercourses is also very important. Wildlife management issues in the management area are: habitat fragmentation; course woody debris; retain or develop large living and dead standing trees (for cavities); mesic conifer; mature forest; within-stand diversity; and deer wintering complexes. The following have been identified as featured species for the Sand River Lake Plain Management Area: American marten, blackburnian warbler, red-shouldered hawk, and white-tailed deer. Mineral Resource and Development Concerns and/or Restrictions An active sand/gravel pit is located less than two miles to the southwest. There may be some sand potential within the compartment, but much of the area is covered by wetlands, which could inhibit any surface mining. Historically, Jacobsville Sandstone was quarried in this part of the state for building stone. However, there is no longer a significant market for the stone. There is no known metallic mineral potential in this area, and there is no history of mineral leasing. There is no potential for economical oil and gas production in the UP. 08/22/2018 8:43:31 AM - Page 1 of 2 DOHMN

Vehicle Access: Vehicle access is good to this compartment but, limited internally. Survey Needs: None Recreational Facilities and Opportunities: The Tyoga Trail, a historical interpretation pathway, is located here. A rustic boat launch is maintained for access to the river and Lake Superior. Fire Protection: Mostly non risk forest types. Additional Compartment Information: Tyoga trail is maintained by private interests. The following reports from the Inventory are attached: Total Acres by Cover Type and Age Class Cover Type by Harvest Method Proposed Treatments No Limiting Factors Proposed Treatments With Limiting Factors Stand Details (Forested and Nonforested) Dedicated and Proposed Special Conservation Areas Site Condition Details The following information is displayed, where pertinent, on the attached compartment maps: Base feature information, stand boundaries, cover types, and numbers Proposed treatments Site condition boundaries Details on the road access system 08/22/2018 8:43:31 AM - Page 2 of 2 DOHMN

Refer to the Special Conservation Area Map for locations of the below listed Conservation Areas. Conservation Area Type Description ERA = Ecological Reference Area HCVA = High Conservation Value Area SCA = Special Conservation Area SCA SCA SCA Cold Water Lake Cold Water Stream Habitat Area A coldwater lake has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species to persist from year to year. Suitable conditions for coldwater fishes may occur in Michigan lakes if they are relatively deep, have substantial groundwater inflows, or are located in colder (northern) areas of the state. Such lakes are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 200. A coldwater stream has temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions that allow naturally-reproduced or stocked trout populations and those of other coldwater fish species (e.g., slimy sculpin) to persist from year to year. Coldwater streams in Michigan typically provide these conditions due to substantial contributions of groundwater to their stream flows. Such streams are established by Director's action and designated as trout resources by Fisheries Order 210. An area that provide some specific need for the life cycle of wildlife species, including State Wildlife Areas and Waterfowl Production Areas, deer wintering complexes in lowland conifer communities, grassland openings and savannas. Habitat areas are distinct from critical habitat designated for recovery of endangered or threatened species (such as Kirtland's warbler or piping plover areas) in that they are more general in nature, are not primarily associated with threatened or endangered species, and are not covered by species recovery plans that are developed in cooperation with Federal agencies. 08/22/2018 8:42:37 AM - Page 1 of 1
