Technical Data Sheet RHOPLEX SG-10M 100% Acrylic Emulsion For Interior/Exterior Semigloss Latex Paints Introduction RHOPLEX SG-10M Acrylic Emulsion is a versatile 100% copolymer that was designed for use in high-quality interior/exterior semigloss paints. RHOPLEX SG-10M Acrylic Emulsion provides paint formulators with an opportunity to achieve excellent early and ultimate block resistance, and very good flow and leveling. This product establishes a new level of performance for aqueous semigloss applications. The results of laboratory tests comparing the performance properties of RHOPLEX SG-10M Acrylic Emulsion against RHOPLEX AC-417M Emulsion, a basic time-proven acrylic vehicle, are included in this bulletin to demonstrate the unique performance characteristics of RHOPLEX SG-10M Acrylic Emulsion in interior paints. Years of exposure and commercial experience demonstrate the excellent exterior durability you would expect from a Dow Chemical RHOPLEX 100% acrylic binder. Features and Benefits Application Excellent flow and leveling Good thickener efficiency Good hiding Performance Superior block resistance at room and elevated temperatures Excellent scrub resistance Excellent wet and dry adhesion to a variety of substrates High gloss potential Good gloss clarity on tinting Typical Physical Properties 1 Property Typical Values Appearance Milky White Liquid Solids Content, % 50 Viscosity, Brookfield, cps (25 C) 50-400 max (#2 spindle, 60 rpm) Specific Gravity, 25 C 1.1 Weight gal, 25 C 8.82 Bulking Value, US gal/lb Dry Solids Wet 0.106 0.113 ph 8.5-9.0 Minimum Film Formation 16 Temperature, (MFFT), C 1. Application And Performance Properties Flow The excellent flow properties of a formulation based on RHOPLEX SG-10M Acrylic Emulsion are much better than those of a formulation based on RHOPLEX AC-417M Emulsion. RHOPLEX SG-10M Acrylic Emulsion is designed for maximum performance with associative rheology modifiers and is superior to commercial acrylic and vinyl/acrylic polymers. Block Resistance Figures 1 and 2 illustrate the dramatically superior block resistance obtained by using RHOPLEX SG-10M Acrylic Emulsion instead of RHOPLEX AC-417M Emulsion in tests conducted over a seven day period at room temperature and at 120 F. There is a rapid development of block resistance with no film damage after one day at room temperature. Figure 2 also shows the excellent performance of coatings based on RHOPLEX SG-10M Acrylic Emulsion at elevated temperatures. Scrub Resistance The superior abrasive scrub resistance furnished by formulations based on RHOPLEX SG-10M Acrylic Emulsion over those based on RHOPLEX AC-417M Emulsion is shown in Figure 3. Moreover, the use of RHOPLEX SG-10M Acrylic Emulsion produces an excellent balance of adhesion and scrub resistance. Rating: 0-10 (10 best) + = moderately improved + = greatly improved 9 55 14 57 Formulating Guidelines Rheology Modifiers RHOPLEX SG-10M Acrylic Emulsion is best formulated with urethane rheology modifiers to get the best flow in a film. A combination of ACRYSOL RM-2020NPR Rheology Modifier and ACRYSOL RM-825 Rheology Modifier exhibit excellent flow and leveling. ACRYSOL RM-5 Rheology Modifier gives inferior flow and HEC should be avoided. Dispersants TAMOL 731 Dispersant gives the best overall properties. Slight improvements in gloss can be achieved with TAMOL 1124 Dispersant, and TAMOL 165 Dispersant can be used if water sensitivity is an issue. TAMOL 681 Dispersant is not recommended because it shows poorer performance for block resistance. Polyacid dispersants such as TAMOL 1254 and Colloid 226 have very poor color acceptance and stability in combination with ACRYSOL RM-2020NPR Rheology Modifier. Biocides KATHON LX 1.5% Preservative is recommended as a biocide, but the order of addition is important. To avoid flocculation problems, KATHON LX 1.5% Biocide should be added to the grind before the addition of the pigments. Page 4 of 6 RHOPLEX SG-10M Acrylic Emulsion Form No. 884-00135-0612-NAR-EN-CDP
Coalescents Texanol ester alcohol is the coalescent recommended for use with RHOPLEX SG-10M Acrylic Emulsion. For marginal drying conditions, formulators should use this product at a level of 10% on latex binder solids to ensure adequate film formation. In interior applications lower levels of Texanol, as little as 6%, can be used. However the film formation properties of paints containing low levels of coalescent should be tested before use under adverse conditions. Defoamers Henkel s Foamaster VL defoamer has effectively suppressed foam in test formulations. A typically used level is two pounds per 100 gallons of paint. Handling of Emulsions As with all hard emulsion polymers, special care should be taken with RHOPLEX SG-10M Acrylic Emulsion to avoid the formation of dried polymer particles that can cause grit problems. We recommend that the material be filtered before the emulsion is pumped into the letdown vessel. Filter bags with 100-250 micron (150-60 mesh) size have proven effective. Another situation to avoid while handling the emulsion is the generation of foam. There should be no free fall of emulsion. It is imperative that suitable materials of construction of tanks, pumps, lines, and other auxiliary equipment be used. We recommend stainless steel or plastic. (See 1-PRM brochure for more details.) Suggested Formulations Safe Handling Information Starting point formulations customized to your specific application needs are available from your local Dow representative.
