Steel rod residual or tramp element in scrap steel used to make rod 2. Copper Plating Causes of Copper Flaking: 1. Poor cleanliness of the wire prior to the copper plating operation. 2. Lack of process control in the plating process. 3. Excessive scraping and abrasion in the wire delivery system in the welding operation as caused by worn drive rolls, incorrect drive roll size, guide misalignment, excessive let-off tension, grooved wire guides, or guides with sharp edges. Welding Applications Where Wire is a Benefit: y Welding applications using low voltage or long tip-to-work distances y Welding parameters using 16 to 17 volts and tip-to-work distances greater than ¾ with.035 diameter wire y Welding torches with tight goose-necks that reduce the cast excessively will have improved tip life with copper coated wires 4 www.nationalstandard.com National Standard Customer Service 1-800-777-1618 Fax 1-269-683-9276

wire cast and helix Product Description: National Standard offers a variety of solid welding wires to meet the needs of today s welding applications. Whether you are looking for individual spools to support your composite welding machine and feeder system or operating hundreds of robots in a production environment, National Standard has a solid welding wire that will maximize your productivity, reduce downtimes associated with change-outs and provide pay-off systems that product quality welds. Our flexibility in welding wires insures that your National Standard Welding Wire purchase is tailored to your needs. NS Premium Weld Wire Characteristics: Consistent Cast and Helix Yield Weld Uniformity Improper wire cast and helix reduces weld quality and adds to direct labor and factory overhead costs. Small cast and large helix causes the wire to exit the welding gun (contact tip) in constantly varying directions. It also causes downtime due to wire feeding problems. Too large a cast will cause downtime on some equipment due to inconsistent current pickup at the contact tip resulting in inconsistent wire positioning. Helix is most detrimental when it is inconsistent and varies throughout the spool. This condition can result in arc wander. The amount of wire deflection due to excessive helix increases as cast decreases or as welding stick-out increases. NS Cast and Helix Characteristics Exceed AWS Standards NS Premium Carbon Weld Wire NS Satin Glide Stainless Steel Weld Wire NS Premium Silicon Bronze Weld Wire Typical Competitive Weld Wires Minimum Cast Maximum Cast Maximum Helix 35 55 1 or less 30 50 1 or less 30 50 1 or less Varies Varies Varies AWS Specification 15 Less than 1 Cast is the diameter of the circle formed by a length of wire thrown loosely on the floor. Cast is normally checked before it enters the wire feed system. Helix is the pitch of a single strand of weld wire measured as the distance one end of a strand of wire laying on a flat surface rises off that surface. Helix is normally checked before it enters the wire feed system. y National Standard s controlled cast and helix helps our wire eliminate excessive contact tip and liner wear, reduce arc wander and improve wire feedability. y Manufactured in the USA according to ISO9001:2000 quality standards National Standard 1-800-777-1618 Customer Service Fax 1-269-683-9276 www.nationalstandard.com 5

Weld Wire Design Product Description: National Standard produces a Matte Finished Welding Wire that is the result of forty-five years of weld wire development. Our engineered finish is designed to provide exceptional feedability in the most demanding conditions combined with outstanding arc characteristics. Its this extra performance that makes National Standard Weld Wires best in class and demanded in the most difficult welding applications and environments. Engineered Finish y Highly polished metal surfaces exhibit high contact angles with liquids (water beading up on a waxed car hood). Textured surfaces allow liquids to soak into the texture (high contact angles aren t an issue since the surface has a variety of angles on a microscopic scale). It is easier to put adequate lube on matte wire. y On a microscopic scale, slightly roughened surfaces in contact exhibit lower friction than two highly polished surfaces in contact. y Both textured and roughened surfaces contribute to lower feed force requirements as exhibited by National Standard welding wires versus competitors. y Micro-arcing from surface roughness may be a factor in tip wear, extensive testing by National Standard points to copper thickness and resulting tip temperature to be the main contributor to tip wear. y Darker areas on Exhibit A and B indicate lubricants used to promote better feedability. Exhibit A appears as streaks and blotches while National Standard wire in Exhibit B clear demonstrates the lubrications penetration of our engineered finish. Exhibit A: Competitive shiny copper welding wire, wet draw processing Exhibit B: National Standard Matte Finished welding wire, dry draw processing Saving Pennies and Spending Dollars National Standard often finds customers in a position to save pennies on their wire costs only to turn around and spend dollars on other costs associated with the welding process. Typically the welding process is made up of the following elements: Weld Wire Cost (3-5% of your cost) + Labor & Overhead Cost (85-90% of your cost) + Shielding Gas Cost (5-10% of your cost) = Total Cost Of Welding Lower Weld Wire Cost lower Total Cost of Welding The assumption necessary to achieve the above is that all other costs remain the same. In situations were the weld wire cost is the only focus, NS often finds that the total cost of welding increases dramatically as a result of saving a penny or two. Other factors increasing the total cost of the weld are often hidden in the organization until long after the decision to save the penny has resulted in spending many dollars. Other factors to consider would be changes in downtime, rework, scrap, consumable usage, employee job satisfaction and customer (your customer) satisfaction. All Weld Wire Is Not the Same All weld wire sold in North America must meet the specifications of the AWS (American Welding Society) or CWB (Canadian Welding Bureau) at a minimum and for the most part all competitors comply. However, the chemistry associated with these standards is wide and open to vast differences in performances for operators. National Standard for instance has developed a very specific set of chemistry specifications for its products that are designed to address the demands of our welding customers, the nuances of different welding applications and also meet the specifications of AWS & CWB. The key to National Standard wires is consistency, consistency to our own demanding specifications, consistency versus AWS & CWB specifications and consistency to our customers over time. That is quite a bit different then a welding wire that just claims to meet the AWS & CWB specifications and can still be in specification yet perform vastly different from spool to spool due to chemistry variations, lubrication variances and differences in other critical weld wire attributes. Packaging Packages like the National Standard Tru-Trac wood reel delivery system are often thought of as just another wood reel. While this may be true from a purchasing perspective, it is definitely not apples to apples from a welding perspective leading to added costs for handling, decreased productivity and quality issues. 6 www.nationalstandard.com National Standard Customer Service 1-800-777-1618 Fax 1-269-683-9276
