RePlast FinEst Workshop III 4.-5.26 Pajulahti, Nastola Results of the research work in Estonia Jaan Kers Tallinn University of Technology
RePlast FinEst Project: Research work Tallinn University of Technology & Tartu University Institute of Technology Liina Lind, Jaan Kers, Indrek Tiimus, Taavi Küttis & Merje Muiste, Antti Roose The research work was divided into 4 main points: 1. External trade statistics of plastic raw material, goods and waste 2. Debriefe in the plastic converters of Estonia 3. Interviews in plastic waste recycling companies 4. Study of the plastic waste amounts in South- Estonia
RePlast FinEst Project: 1. External trade statistics of plastic raw material, goods and waste Import of plastic waste into Estonia in 23 & 24 in tons PE was forming the biggest grop in import of raw material by 16 1 tons (6% LDPE & 4% HDPE) 2. Import of plastic waste has decreased 1.4 times In 23 16 tons In 24 12 tons 3. RePlast FinEst Project: Debriefe in the plastic converters of Estonia 2. Debriefe in plastic convers of Estonia We debriefed 55 companies We have got 22 responses Other companies didn`t want to answer or their field of activity wasn`t germane Questions The main questions were: - How big is the capacity of raw material? - How big is the capacity of production waste? - How much does the company redevelope their production waste? - What kind of plastics does the companie use?

Interviews in plastic waste recycling companies Plastitehase AS (Tallinn) Production output 54 t/y in 25 (plan for 7 t/y in 26) Recycled plastics: PET(bottles), HDPE (films 3 t/y), LDPE (film 2 t/y), PP (films 4 t/y), PS (foam 3 t/y) Dagöplast AS (Hiiumaa) Production output 14 t/y (most of waste are imported from Sweden, Norway, only 1 % is coming from Dagöplast AS film production plant) Recycled plastics is recovered in production of cable protection tape (LDPE) Lipland OÜ (Tartu) Production output in 35 t/y in 25 Recycled plastics (rigid plastics: LDPE bewerage boxes, PVC profiles, etc) Recycled plastics is recovered in production of cable protection tape (LDPE)
RePlast FinEst Project: Study of the plastic waste in South-Estonia 4. Study of the plastic waste amounts in South-Estonia Plan of the Study in South-Estonia Analyzing the Waste plans (systems for pre-sorting of waste by type) Analyzing the statistics of waste report (enterprises have obligation to do waste reports every year for Ministry of TALLINN Environment) Questionary study in Enterprises which have reported the collection of plastic waste Recycling and recovery of plastic waste in South-Estonia JÕGEVAMAA VILJANDIMAA TARTUMAA VALGAMAA PÕLVAMAA VÕRUMAA

RePlast FinEst Project: Example of results Conclusions Most of Estonian plastics converting companies are recycling and recovering their plastic waste or it is collected by Plastic recycling companies locally Estimated amount of recyclable plastic packaging waste in pure grades is 1 tons. Estimated amount of contaminated plastic wastes is 2 tons Plastic waste from ELV and WEEE is exported to Finland, Lithuania, China and India Annual reports of waste generation are incomplete because all the companies which are generating the plastic waste are not obligated to fulfill the waste reports. Generation of plastic wastes (according to waste reports) in South- Estonia has increased 51 % in 2-24 from 431 t/y 872 t/y. Material recovery has increased from 5% to 15%
