Styles If you wish to insert a table of contents, it is recommended that you apply the pre-set styles in Microsoft Word (e.g. Heading 1 for main headers and Heading 2 for sub headings). To do this, highlight the appropriate text and select the Home tab and the Style(s) you wish. Text Formatting You are able to alter the appearance of the text in your document by changing the font type, size, colour and style (i.e. Bold, Underline or Italic). To do this, highlight the appropriate text and select the appropriate option from the Font section (in the Home tab): 3
Pictures Insert Saved Pictures To insert a picture you have saved to your student drive (or flash drive), select the Insert tab and the Pictures option (shown below): Navigate to the location of the saved picture. You can then left click on the picture and select the Insert button. 4
The Picture Tools - Format tab has various features which enable you to customize pictures (please note that you will have to left click on the picture to activate this tab). Insert Online Pictures To insert an online picture, select the Insert tab and Online Pictures option (shown below): 5
Enter the topic you wish to search for and select the search icon (magnifying glass): Select the picture you like and left click on the Insert button: 6

Select the Insert Table option as shown below: Enter the number of columns and rows you wish (and then select OK): 8

Insert Chart Microsoft Word enables you to easily add a chart into your document charts are a great way to visually explain information. First of all, select the Insert tab and then the Chart icon: 9
The different types of charts are shown on the left hand side. Select the type you want and then choose a template: Templates 10
Highlight the data in the worksheet and delete. You can then enter the data you wish your chart to display. To ensure that your chart is as large as possible, remove any blank cells within the lined area of the worksheet (to do this, use your mouse to drag the lines upwards (shown below) you would drag the lines downwards if all of the information you wished to display in the chart was not within the lines): Close the worksheet to view your chart on the slide. You can edit the text in the Chart Title by highlighting it and then typing in your own title instead. Please note, the Chart Tools Design and Format tabs contain features to customize your chart. Insert Smart Art Graphics MICROSOFT WORD USEFUL ESSAY FEATURES Smart Art graphics (such as organisation charts and cycles) can be easily added to your document and are a great way to visualise information. To insert a Smart Art graphic, select the Insert tab and Smart Art icon shown below: The different types of Smart Art Graphics are listed on the left hand side (shown below). Select the type you want and then choose a template: Templates 12
Insert Captions You can easily insert captions to pictures, tables, charts etc. To do this, left click on the picture (or chart etc) to select it. You should then select the References tab and the Insert Caption icon. If you add more captions to your document, you can easily update the captions by selecting the entire document (i.e. hold down the ctrl key and then press the letter A key) and then press the F9 key to refresh the document this ensures that all captions are named sequentially according to their position in the document (e.g.. Figure 1, Figure 2, Figure 3 etc). 13
Insert Header and Footer To Insert a Header and Footer into a document, select the Insert tab > Header (or Footer) option and then choose the header style you wish: You can then left click on the current text (to select it) and then simply type in the text you want: Please ask a Learning Resource Staff member if you are unsure how to apply these features. 14
Insert Page Numbers To insert a Page Number into a document, select the Insert tab > Page Number option and then choose the options you wish: Please ask a Learning Resource Staff member if you are unsure how to apply these features. 15
Insert Table of contents To insert a Table of contents, please ensure that all of the headings (and sub headings) in your document have an appropriate style attached (Please read the Styles section at the start of this guide if you are unsure about this). 1. Left click in the section of the document you wish to insert the table of contents (e.g. start of the file). 2. Select the References tab > Table of contents option 3. Select either the Automatic Table 1 or Automatic Table 2 options Please note, if you need to update the table of contents, left click on it and select the update table option.
