The 2014 ABC Part 9.7 requires that windows and doors be installed as per the CSA 440 Standard This standard deals with residential and light commercial installations in low rise buildings 4
There are 2 partsin the document. The Standard and the Annexes The Standard is Mandatory but the Annexes are not 5
SCOPE of CSA 440 Applies to NEW& REPLACEMENT Assumes you know ABC Requirements Standard deals with ALL window types although in Alberta the primary type is flanged DOES NOT address skill or workmanship DOES NOT apply to picking window types NOT a technical How to or Best Practice CLIMATIC EXPOSURE Standard references 3 main levels of exposure Low or Non Moderate High Clause 10.3 - Sub-sill drainage shall be installed under windows and doors with moderate -to high exposure rating (see Annex A); or 6
Examples Photos / videos ANNEX A Nomograph First Find Moisture index Hint Highest in Alberta is.68 7
Second Overhang Ratio Horizontal distance between cladding and overhang Height of the overhang above the lowest sill 8
ANNEX A Nomograph Bungalow 11 High 24 =.18 16 =.14 36 =.27 Examples Photos / videos 9
ANNEX A Nomograph 2 Storey 20 High 24 =.1 16 =.06 Window Install does not have to match wall Annex A ( Non Mandatory) 10
Annex provides guidance on critical barriers and how to tie in the barriers to the wall design Examples Photos / videos 11

Materials Clause 4.0 Fasteners must be rust resistant. Screws are preferred, but nails and staples acceptable. Should be made of the same materials as the metal they fasten (prevent galvanic reactions Material compatibility must be checked Shims must be moisture resistant materials NO OSB Flashings Same as ABC Tolerances for installation < 6 = 1/16 > 6 = 1/8 Examples Photos / videos 13
General Requirements Clause 5 health and safety structural performance and control of air leakage, condensation, and rain penetration, for (a) thermal comfort and (b) mould and associated IAQ. Annex D Field Testing General Requirements Clause 5 The completed install shall control; (a) moisture flow (liquid and vapour); (b) condensation; (c) insect entry; (d) thermal transmission; (e) air flow; (f) rain penetration; and (g) movement due to wind pressure differentials And acoustics if necessary 14
RO Prep & Fastening Clause 6 LOW or NON Exposure Installations Sheathing Membrane into RO on 4 Sides Proper lap Clause 6.2 & 6.3 for Retrofit Replacement Structural support Remove old materials Installed Plumb & Level so as to be operational No Vertical loading on head Adequate R.O. Sides 3/8 Min ¾ Max Top & Bottom ½ Min. 7/8 max Shims must be in correct location and directly supporting to sill RO Prep & Fastening Clause 6 RO Prep 15
SHIMS Pre-level sills Add shims (not OSB) Don t nail shims through horizontal membranes Can t use foam as shim RO Prep & Fastening Clause 6 Fastening Non Rusting 1 Penetration 16

THERMAL CONTROL - Insulation Clause 7 Avoid thermal bridges Insulation from interior to outer glazing Don t compact insulation Leave space between for drainage OUTSIDE OUTSIDE INTERIOR Examples Photos / videos INTERIOR 18
AIR LEAKAGE CONTROL Clause 8 the amount of moisture moved into a wall or roof resulting from vapour diffusion is far less than that moved resulting from air leakage. If adequate vapour diffusion control is provided across the opaque portion of the building envelope, vapour diffusion through small discontinuities at a frame-to-wall or frame-to-roof junction is unlikely to have significant adverse consequences Air leakage through the intersection between the window, door, or skylight and the wall or roof assembly should be similar to that of a fixed window AIR LEAKAGE CONTROL Clause 8 Options: NOTE: Jamb extensions must be air tight 8.2 INTERIOR -Backer rod & caulking Can t use trim as part of the seal 8.3 POLY WRAP only for wood frames poly attached to unit before installation with caulking and tape 8.4 WOOD SUBFRAME poly wrapped into RO, then caulking applied then sheathing used over Increase RO size. 8.5 ADA air tight drywall sealed to windows 8.6 FOAM open or closed cell 2 lifts 8.7 EXTERIOR AIR SEAL face seal only 19

AIR LEAKAGE CONTROL Clause 8 Rules for foam (1) Foam shall not be used to eliminate shims. (2) Foam shall not be used to eliminate fasteners. (3) Foam shall not be used as a backer rod. (4) Foam shall not be in contact with sealants or allowed to contaminate surfaces where sealants will be applied. (5) One component foam shall not be injected into closed frame cavities. VAPOUR CONTROL Clause 9 Options: 8.2 INTERIOR -Backer rod & caulking 8.3 POLY WRAP only for wood frames poly attached to unit before installation with caulking and tape 8.4 WOOD SUBFRAME poly wrapped into RO, then caulking appled then sheathing used over Increase RO size. 8.5 ADA air tight drywall sealed to windows 8.6 FOAM open or closed cell 2 lifts Although for Canada, this requirement is important but in context Alberta this area is about 1/100 th of a concern as are water, air and thermal 22
PRECIPITATIONCONTROL Clause 10 Principles of Clause 10 minimize the entry of water into the wall cavity and/or the rough opening gap for windows and doors prevent the entry of water into the wall cavity below the waterproof membrane or primary water-shedding materials. PRECIPITATIONCONTROL Clause 10 Connection of unit to wall/roof assembly Allows for water ingress and drainage around the RO Applies the code references of FIRST and SECOND planes of protection - Good understanding of this principle. Same flashing rules as ABC Door sill installation requires 2- beads of sealant Exterior joints sealed to minimize entry Employs the ¼ soffit rule 23
Annex provides guidance on critical barriers Second Plane First Plane and how to tie in the barriers to the wall design 24

What does this all mean? Should have a copy of the standard Understand the liability of reliance on SCO to meet compliance Understand FIRST and SECOND plane protection Understand Critical barriers 1. Water Control 2. Air Control 3. Thermal Control 4. Vapour Control Sill protection is simple - Waterproof membrane only requirement Sloped sills, back dams, etc. not part of the standard Principles to consider in meeting CSA 440 Exposure rating is it going to get pounded? Is it sheltered? Materials Compatibility Air tightness method mono jamb versus jamb extension Ease of installation/use 28
