BSc (Hons) Business and Management BSc (Hons) Business and Management programme (final year) is an innovative undergraduate degree programme which builds upon your prior study as a progression towards the degree. The programme is delivered over 12 months commencing with an induction in Sri Lanka by Northumbria University lecturers to introduce students to the learning resources, tutors, modules and assessment. Students are required to complete five modules and a research dissertation supported by tutors from the university and locally. Course Structure Leadership Understanding Strategy Research Informed Learning and Practice Contemporary Corporate Reporting Re Imagining Work and Organisations Research Dissertation Module Synopsis Leadership In this module you will study the nature of leadership and the differences between leadership and management. You will develop an appreciation of the characteristics of an effective leader and capabilities which may indicate evidence of an emerging capacity on leadership in an organisational setting. This will support your future employability by developing your understanding of leadership theory and models as well as providing you with the opportunity to reflect on how you may use this knowledge to appreciate your own leadership potential and develop your capacity on effective leadership in future employment roles. Re Imagining Work and Organisations Re-imagining work and organisations aims to explore recent and anticipated events in the development of management practice. While it is based on organisation-based theory and frameworks, it also examines new and emerging structures and processes in the world of work and in a changing busines environment. This may include for example: new organisational structures, responsible business and sustainability, power and influence, stakeholder interest and value. This module will support the development of key knowledge and skills, which are seen as important to successful management practice and effective leadership. It seeks to help you engage in critical analysis and provides a reflection from an ethical and professional standpoint, to develop awareness of evidence based practice, and to apply concepts, tools and techniques to your own work or case organisation. 2

Research Informed Learning and Practice Your learning programme is underpinned by a research rich approach to learning in which subject content is based on research and you will engage critically with outputs from research into business and management. You will also engage in conducting research by yourself, through enquiry into business practices as well as your own professional practice and personal behaviour. Understanding Strategy This module is intended to develop your awareness and critical evaluation of strategic management by assessing the impact of the business environment on organisations. The nature of practicing strategy will be evaluated by reviewing the tools and activities involved when formulating strategies. The concept of corporate social responsibility and sustainability will be central when discussing the above topics by assessing the role of stakeholders in organisations. Contemporary Corporate Reporting The aims of this module is to equip you with the ability to comprehensively understand corporate reports, including financial statements. You will learn to analyse the performance of a company and critically evaluate the quality of the information given in its corporate reports, from an end user s perspective. This is essential for many business roles, and not limited to roles in finance. In studying this module you will learn about current reporting issues both from an academic, research-based perspective, to a practical, business perspective. The assignment and the exercises you will be using for practice are based on actual company reports, so that you are working with and experiencing real world documents. Research Dissertation This module builds on your previous learning and provides an opportunity for you to develop your research skills through engaging in a research project addressing a theme of your choice related to business, management or leadership. The project will draw upon your learning in module Research Informed Learning and Practice in which you will have conducted a literature review addressing your chosen theme and developed-proposed research aims/objectives. During this module you will conduct the research required to address your identified aims through collecting and analysing data and interpreting it to generate conclusions. 3

The module covers the core aspects of raising capital and determining financing, investing capital in major corporate decisions, and finally returning value to shareholders. The module takes you through specific areas of credit and market risks within the context of the relevant regulatory framework (The Basel Accords) and draws on case study material provided by high profile banks and financial institution. You will be expected to develop an understanding of the nature of credit and market risks, its measurement models and management issues. 8

You will be developing and communicating an effective fraud risk assessment framework. Prominent real life financial disasters would also be examined to demonstrate how these issues can impact upon banking and financial institutions. Research Dissertation This module builds on your previous learning and provides an opportunity for you to develop your research skills through engaging in a research project addressing a theme of your choice related to business, management or leadership.
