Eco-Steel+ is designed to stay cool on the outside, to provide a hot draft on the inside, and to provide a fire-safe design that protects both the chimney and the building. The doublewall air-cooled design allows the chimney to expand under high temperatures. Materials and Construction 0.016 430 SS inner wall and 0.021 Galvalume outer wall. 2-inch clearance to combustibles. Listings UL Listed to UL 103 and ULC S604 standards. Eco-Steel+ is listed under UL Re-examination Service Number MH60628. INSTALLATION NOTES Proper planning for your Eco-Steel+ installation will result in greater safety, efficiency, and convenience, as well as saving time and money. You must use only authorized Eco-Steel+ parts to maintain a listed chimney system. Do not mix air cooled with insulated Eco-Steel+ chimney sections, try to match with other products, or use improvised solutions. Do not install damaged or modified parts. Practice good workmanship. Sloppy work could jeopardize your chimney s safety. Keep electrical wiring and building insulation away from all chimneys. When deciding the location of your chimney, try to avoid modifications to roof beams and other structural components of the building. Contact either your dealer or Isokern directly if you have any questions. CLEARANCES Always allow at least a 2-inch air-space clearance between Eco-Steel+ pipe and any combustible materials. Never fill any required clearance space with insulation or any other materials. Combustible materials include, but are not limited to lumber, plywood, sheetrock, plaster and lath, furniture, curtains, electrical wiring, and building insulation. CHIMNEY APPLICATIONS Eco-Steel+ is a complete chimney system tested and listed to UL 103 and ULC S604. In the United States, Eco-Steel+ can be used with Isokern Fireplaces fueled by gas or wood that have been tested and listed for use with a UL 103 chimney system. In Canada, Eco- Steel+ can be used with Isokern Fireplaces requiring a Type A Chimney, in accordance with ULC S604. Do not use with forced draft or positive-pressure fireplaces. The Eco-Steel+ system is designed to extend vertically with a maximum of two (2) offsets (four elbows total), each offset up to 30 from vertical. CHIMNEY HEIGHT The National Fire Protection Association Standard #211 states: Chimneys shall extend at least three feet above the highest point where it passes through the roof of a building, and at least two feet higher than any portion of a building within ten feet. (Figure 1). Due to the overlap of the joints, subtract 1 1/2-inch from each Chimney Section s height to calculate installed height. PERMITS Contact your local Building Official or Fire Official regarding permits, restrictions, and installation inspections in your area. 4

CHIMNEY ENCLOSURE REQUIREMENTS Through Rooms: Interior chimneys shall be enclosed where they extend through closets, storage areas, occupied spaces, or anywhere where the surface of the chimney could be contacted by persons or combustible materials (including insulation). The air space between the outer wall of the chimney and the enclosure shall be at least 2-inches Multi-Story: Consult local building code officials for requirements in your area. The National Fire Protection Association Standard #211 states: Factory-built chimneys that pass through floors of buildings requiring the protection of vertical openings shall be enclosed with approved walls having a fire resistance rating of not less than one hour when such chimneys are located in a building less than 4 stories in height, and not less than 2 hours when such chimneys are located in a building more than 4 stories in height. In Canada, except in single-family and twofamily dwellings, chimneys which extend through another story must have an enclosure with a fire resistance rating equal to or greater than that of the floor or roof assembly through which they pass. Cold Climates: In cold climates, chimneys mounted on an outside wall should be enclosed in a chase. Exterior chases reduce condensation and creosote formation, and enhance draft. Always maintain a 2-inch airspace clearance to combustibles. 3 FOOT MINIMUM ABOVE ROOFLINE Figure 1 2 FOOT ABOVE ANY POINT WITHIN 10 FOOT HORIZONTAL FIREPLACE RECOMMENDATIONS Always follow the Isokern Fireplace installation instructions. Installation: Install your fireplace as described by the Isokern Fireplace installation manual. Be sure to maintain all required clearances. Flues: Connect only one fireplace per chimney. Operation: Follow the fireplace safety manual for maximum efficiency and safety. Do not over fire. Any damage to the fireplace or chimney can void your warranties. Fuels: Do not burn driftwood, plastic, or chemically treated wood such as railroad ties. They are corrosive to your chimney system. Follow the Isokern Fireplace installation instructions regarding fuels. 5

ISOKERN MODULAR MASONARY FIREPLACE INSTALLATION 1. Place Fireplace: Position the fireplace according to the Isokern Fireplace installation instructions. If possible, the flue outlet should be placed between the rafters or joists above. 2. Mount Anchor Plate: Chimneys for Isokern Modular Masonry fireplaces manufactured by Earthcore Industries begin with an Anchor Plate or Anchor Plate with Damper. Warning: The Anchor Plate with Damper is not allowed in chimneys serving stoker-fired or liquid / gasburning appliances. Caution: Do not install the Anchor Plate with Damper on Factory-built fireplaces. Important: be sure the surface of the masonry chimney has a level surface on which to attach the Anchor Plate / Anchor Plate with Damper and Iso-Wool Insulation Pad. Center the Isowool gasket under the anchor plate and trace an outline of the flue opening with a pen or marker. Cut a hole in the Isowool gasket along the traced line. Center the anchor plate and Isowool gasket over the masonary flue opening. If a damper is used, make sure nothing interferes with the damper plate movement. Secure the Anchor Plate and gasket with (Qty 4) 2-inch x 1/4-inch masonry anchors (Figure 2). 3. Damper Plate: The damper plate should swing freely once the Anchor Plate with Damper is installed. When the chain is pulled down, the damper plate should close (horizontal position). When the chain is released (no weight on the chain), the damper should swing open (vertical position). 4. Attach Chimney: Attach the first Chimney Section onto the Anchor Plate. Always maintain at least a 2-inch clearance to combustibles. The 2-inch clearance is an air space; do not fill that clearance space with any materials. If an offset is required, refer to the Elbow Offset Installation section below. 5. Frame Openings: From the ceiling, drop a plumb bob to the center of the fireplace s flue outlet and mark this center point on the ceiling. Refer to Table 1 for the framing dimensions. Mark appropriate cutting lines around the center point. Cut a square hole in the ceiling. Frame a level, square opening centered over the hole that you have cut. Frame openings at each floor level above the fireplace (Figure 3). These openings are to hold the Firestop and Attic Insulation Shield. Locate each opening by dropping a plumb bob to the four corners of the opening below. Maintain the minimum 2-inch clearance/air-space. 6

TERMINATION CAP STORM COLLAR CHASE TOP FLASHING (4) ROOF RADIATION SHIELDS 6. Install Firestop: A Firestop is required on each floor penetration in multistory installations. Building Codes require a Firestop at every floor/ceiling level, including where the chimney penetrates into the attic. Figure 3 shows a typical 2-story installation with an attic. The Firestop is installed on the underside of the ceiling/floor framing (Figure 4). Use one (1) 8-penny nail or one (1) 1 1/4-inch wood screw per corner. 7. Assemble Chimney Sections: Sections of pipe are joined together by lining up the female end locking lug with the male end slot, pushing them together, and turning clockwise to twist lock (Figure 5). needed, however if desired, use 1/4-inch long sheet metal screws. Never penetrate the inner liner with screws. Use a Wall Strap every eight (8) feet of chimney height. 8. Supplementary Support and Stabilizer: Install a Supplementary Support if total chimney height is greater than 50 feet. If additional support is needed, install one or more Supplementary Supports which can each support 25 feet of chimney (Figure 6). Clamp the Supplementary Support band around the pipe using the nut and bolt provided and anchor the support to nearby building framing. Always maintain the 2-inch clearance to combustibles from the chimney pipe. A Stabilizer is available and may be required to keep the chimney vertical and help maintain clearances to combustibles within a chase. Clamp the Stabilizer to the pipe using the nut and bolt provided and secure legs to nearby INSTALL SUPP. Note: the Stabilizer does not support the weight of the chimney, it is only used to keep chimney centered within a chase. 9. Install Attic Insulation Shield: The Attic Insulation Shield must be installed where the chimney passes into an attic. Its purpose is to prevent debris and insulation from getting too close to the chimney. In attic areas where this shield cannot fit or is not used, you must enclose the attic portion of the chimney in a framed enclosure (always maintain 2-inch air-space clearance to combustibles). If the chimney is fully enclosed through the attic, an Attic Insulation Shield is not required. Install the Attic Insulation Shield as follows: a. Remove any insulation or debris from attic floor around the framed opening. b. Assemble chimney sections until at least 18 inches of chimney extends above the Firestop and is above the intended insulation level. c. Slip the Attic Insulation Shield over the chimney until the base sits squarely on the framed opening (Figure 8). 8

Secure the Attic Insulation Shield to the top of the framed opening using at least (Qty 2) 8-penny nails or (Qty 2) #8 1 1/2-inch wood screws per side (Figure 9). e. Secure the telescoping shield in place with at least two (2) sheet metal screws. Verify the telescoping shields overlap at least 1-inch. f. Wrap the Attic Insulation Shield Collar around the chimney and fasten it loosely. Slide the collar down to meet the Attic Insulation Shield. Tighten the collar to the pipe, insert the tab into the appropriate slot and fold the tab back onto itself. (Figure 9). 10. Install Roof Radiation Shields: Roof Radiation Shields provide protection for roof or chase framing members. Note: Roof Radiation Shields do not allow for a reduced CHASE ENCLOSURE Figure 10 clearance to combustibles. Clearance to combustibles must be a minimum of 2-inch away from the chimney pipe. Install Roof Radiation Shields at either the top of the chase or where the chimney penetrates the roof, whichever is the top of the installation. Roof Radiation Shields are built with a 1/2-inch air gap standoff from the joist face (Figure 10). The corners of the Roof Radiation Shields overlap each other to ensure proper position. Secure the Roof Radiation Shields to the top of the framing members using screws or nails in the corners (Figure 10). If framing members are further away from the chimney than 2-inch, center the Roof Radiation Shield to the chimney on the framing member and secure in place with screws or nails. 11. Install Chase Top Flashing: Install at the top of the chase with a 1/2-inch minimum air clearance off the top of the chase construction (Figure 11). Use spacing clips provided to establish 1/2-inch air clearance. Secure the Chase Top Flashing to the chase with at least three (3) screws or nails per side. If the Chase Top Flashing does not fit the dimensions of the chase, use a Chase Top Collar and extend the base of the collar as needed to fit the chase dimensions. Ensure the minimum 9

Secure the Chase Top Collar to the field-fabricated chase top with sheet metal screws or rivets (Figure 13). Seal the Chase Top Collar to the chase top with non-hardening waterproof sealant to ensure a weather tight connection. Additional screening for field-fabricated chase covers is allowed. Additional 1/2-inch minimum spacers can be field-fabricated as needed out of 24 GA sheet metal or other suitable non-combustible material. Additional non-combustible structural supports can be field-fabricated to help support the chase top flashing if needed, provided the air ventilation requirements are maintained. When installed, the bottom of the Chimney Cap must be at least 6 inches above the base of the Chase Top Flashing (Figure 14). 12. Finish Top: Apply a non-hardening waterproof sealant around the chimney at the point where the Storm Collar will meet the chimney just above the Flashing (Figure 14). Slide the Storm Collar down over the chimney to the top of the Flashing. The Storm Collar must be installed with a 1-inch minimum gap between it and the base of the flashing to provide proper ventilation (Figure 14). Tighten the Collar to the pipe, insert the tab into the appropriate slot and fold the tab back onto itself. Seal Storm Collar against the Chimney with sealant. Be sure the chimney and any offsets are properly supported. Attach the Chimney Cap to the top of the chimney by setting the female end of the Cap onto the male end of the last chimney section (Figure 15). Do not push down from the top portion of the cap as this may damage the Cap, push from the lower section of the Cap if needed. Secure the Cap to the male end of chimney with the (Qty 4) sheet metal screws provided. The Chimney Cap can be removed for chimney cleaning as described in the Chimney Maintenance section of the instructions. 10

Enclosures: Enclose chimneys where they pass through occupied spaces, including closets. Always maintain at least a 2-inch clearance between the chimney and any combustible materials. Interior enclosures may be constructed with standard framing and sheathed with sheetrock or plywood. Use a Wall Strap or Stabilizer at least every 8 feet to maintain a minimum of 2-inches of air space between the chimney and combustible materials. Figure 15 OFFSET ELBOW INSTALLATION A 30 Elbow (measured from the vertical) is the largest that can be used in an offset. A 30 Elbow may not be combined with another elbow to make a steeper offset (e.g. two 30 Elbows are not allowed to be put together to form a 60 elbow). Avoid Elbows if possible. A totally vertical chimney is more efficient. When Elbows are necessary to avoid obstructions such as rafters, ridgepoles, or joists, you are allowed to install 2 offsets (4 elbows total) in any one chimney system. Refer to Table 2 to determine the pipe sections needed for the offset desired. Horizontal runs of chimney violate building code and are not allowed. 1. Attach Elbows: Attach an Elbow to a chimney section or other Elbow by mating the male and female ends with each other. Note: Elbows do not have Female twist locks, as this allows for variable elbow orientation. Align the Elbow for the offset, and affix using the (Qty 4) sheet metal screws provided. Determine the required 11

Secure Offset: Use an Elbow Strap to secure the offset. Secure the Elbow Strap s band to the upper portion of the top Elbow, then tighten the nut and bolt until the clamp is firm. Wrap each Elbow Strap's end over an adjacent joist or rafter and secure it with at least two (2) 8-penny nails or #8 1-1/2 inch screws. Add additional Elbow Straps for each section of chimney in the offset (Figure 16). Every chimney section in the offset must be supported. Do not add more Chimney Sections until the Elbows and the offset are supported. Be sure that the chimney above the second elbow remains vertical. 12

CHIMNEY MAINTENANCE 1. Creosote and Soot: When wood is burned slowly, it produces tar and other organic vapors, which combine with expelled moisture to produce creosote. The creosote vapors condense in the relatively cool chimney flue of a slow-burning fire. As a result, creosote residue accumulates on the flue lining. When ignited, this creosote makes an extremely hot fire. 2. Access: Chimneys must be installed so that access is provided for inspection and cleaning. 3. When to Clean: The chimney should be inspected at least once every month during the heating season to determine if creosote or soot has built up. Check spark arrestor screens at least every 2 to 4 weeks. If creosote or soot has accumulated on the spark arrestor, it should be cleaned or replaced to reduce the risk of chimney fire. 4. How to Clean: Have your chimney cleaned by a professional Certified Chimney Sweep if you have doubts about your ability to clean it. Use a plastic, wood, or steel brush. Do not use a brush that will scratch the stainless steel liner of your chimney. Scrub the spark arrestor with a wire brush. To access the chimney for cleaning, unscrew the four (4) screws that attach the top lid of the Chimney Cap to the cap's legs and remove the lid. 5. Chemical Cleaners: Use chemical cleaners only as a last resort, and use only those that Earthcore specifically warrants as being non-corrosive to the chimney. Earthcore will assume no liability for damage resulting from the use of chemical cleaners. 6. In Case of Fire: If a flue fire occurs, close all possible air inlets, and call your Fire Department. Do not use the chimney again until it has been inspected by a Certified Chimney Sweep for possible damage. 7. Painting: As an option, you can coat all exterior metal parts, with the exception of the top portion of the Chimney Cap, with high temperature, rust proof paint. Wash the metal with a vinegar and water solution to remove any oil residue before painting. Painting the chimney will help to increase chimney life. 8. Creosote Formation: Earthcore assumes no liability for structural damage or roof contamination as the result of creosote formation. It is the owner s responsibility to comply with inspection and cleaning requirements as described in these instructions, and those of the Isokern Fireplace instructions. 13

SHROUD REQUIREMENTS Shrouds can either be field-fabricated or factory-fabricated, but they must meet the requirements as specified in these instructions. Shrouds must be constructed of a minimum 24 gauge (.024 ) stainless steel, aluminized steel, galvanized steel, or copper. Other materials may also be used, such as brick, mortar, stucco, stone, etc., provided they are completely non-combustible. Check with your local building code authorities for any additional shroud requirements. Shrouds must be able to be removed to allow chimney access to properly clean the chimney. Eco-Steel+ installations which include the use of a shroud must comply with the following requirements (Figure 17): Eco-Steel+ must maintain at least 2-inch clearance from combustible materials. The chase enclosure must be ventilated. The Chase Top Flashing or field-fabricated chase pan must be used. Field-fabricated chase pans are acceptable if they meet these requirements: Material must be 24 gauge (.024 ) Galvanized steel or equivalent. Chase pan must have opening 3-inch larger than outside diameter of chimney pipe with at least a 1/2-inch upturned flange/collar. Chase pan must overhang chase by 1/2-inch per side for proper air flow. Chase pan must have a 1-inch down turned outside edge (weather protection). Field-fabricated spacers (1/2-inch tall, 24 gauge or.024 Galvanized steel) must be used to support the Chase Top Flashing or chase pan, in order to provide air flow. Eco-Steel+ pipe must extend at least 6 inches above the chase pan/flashing. An Eco-Steel+ cap must be used inside the shroud. The Shroud must not be in direct contact with any of the Eco-Steel+ components (other than Chase Top Flashing). All Open Areas of the shroud must be covered with 1/2-inch stainless or galvanized steel mesh screen to prevent debris from entering the Shroud. Shrouds must follow the dimensional requirements specified in Tables 3, 4 or 5, depending on the style of shroud used. The three basic shroud styles are a) House, b) Arch or Mailbox, and c) Pyramid. Most factory-fabricated shrouds will fall under one of these basic style categories. HOUSE STYLE SHROUD The House style shroud is roughly square or rectangular with a closed top and exhaust openings on four (4) sides. (Figure 18) Table 3 lists the minimum Shroud dimensions, the minimum Open Area per side, and the minimum Total Open Area for the Shroud. Shaded area represents screened Open Area. EUROPEAN COPPER SHROUD These installation instructions apply to installing the European Copper Chimney Pots King or Bishop model shroud/pot onto Eco-Steel+ chimney. Currently, only the King and Bishop models are listed for use with Eco-Steel+. To install a European Copper Chimney Pot (King or Bishop model) properly on Eco-Steel+, the standard chimney cap is removed from the system and replaced with a dedicated, UL listed Adapter. The Adapter must be used with Eco-Steel+ in order to maintain the UL listing of the system. Figure 21 shows the Adapter itself. There are two different Adapter models, one dedicated to the King model, and a separate Adapter dedicated for the Bishop model. Use only the correct Adapter model for the Pot and chimney for your system. Figure 22 shows the overall completed installation of the European Copper King model onto Eco-Steel+ using the Adapter. Figure 23 shows attachment detail of the Adapter for Eco-Steel+. Installation of the Bishop model is the same as that of the King, except for using the dedicated Bishop Adapter. The top of the chimney pipe for Eco-Steel+ must extend between 2-inch and 4.5-inch above the collar of the Chase Top Flashing (or Chase Top Collar). For Eco-Steel+, install the required Storm Collar on the outer wall of the chimney, as normal (Figure 23). Before mounting the European Copper Chimney Pot (King or Bishop) to the top of the chase, connect the Adapter to the Pot by hooking the clip legs of the Adapter into the horizontal slots of the Pot s inner wall (Figures 23). Ensure all four legs of the Adapter are hooked into the slots. 18 Lifting the European Copper Pot and attached Adapter, guide the bottom of the Adapter into the inner wall of the chimney. Slide the Adapter into the inner wall of the chimney pipe until the base of the European Copper Pot reaches the Chase Top Flashing. Secure the European Copper Chimney Pot as directed by the installation instructions provided by European Copper. Figure 21 SHROUD WARRANTY Earthcore makes no warranty or representation of any kind, either express or implied, concerning the materials, quality, workmanship or installation of the third-party manufactured shrouds that may be used in connection with the Eco-Steel+ System. Earthcore expressly disclaims any and all liability of any kind related to the materials, quality, workmanship or installation of such third party manufactured shrouds. Earthcore warrants the accuracy of its specifications for the selection of third-party manufactured shrouds. Should a third-party manufactured shroud require replacement due to the inaccuracy of a Earthcore selection specification, Earthcore s sole obligation and liability will be to replace such shroud with one of similar size and quality appropriate to the installation. Earthcore s warranties are otherwise limited to the warranties set forth in the Eco-Steel+ Lifetime Limited Warranty.

EARTHCORE WARRANTY Earthcore Industries, LLC. ( Earthcore ) provides this limited lifetime warranty for all of its products to the original purchaser, with the exception of Termination Caps (five years). Subject to the limitations set forth below, Earthcore warrants that its products will be free from substantial defects in material or manufacturing, if properly installed, maintained and used. This Warranty is non-transferable. This warranty does not cover normal wear and tear, smoke damage or damage caused by chimney fires, acts of God, or any product that was: (1) purchased other than from an authorized Earthcore dealer, retailer or distributor; (2) modified or altered; (3) improperly serviced, inspected or cleaned; or (4) subject to negligence or any use not in accordance with the printed materials provided with the product as determined by Earthcore. This limited lifetime warranty applies only to parts manufactured by Earthcore. Earthcore provides the following warranties for its products: One Hundred Percent (100%) of the purchase price or MSRP at time of purchase, whichever is lower, for 15 years from the date of purchase, and Fifty Percent (50%) thereafter, except for the following limitation: all Termination Caps are warranted at One Hundred Percent (100%) for five years, and at Ten Percent (10%) thereafter. All warranty obligations of Earthcore shall be limited to repair or replacement of the defective product pursuant to the terms and conditions applicable to each product line.
