Our playground: Bioeconomy to adressing societal challenges from fossil to renewable resources: GHG reduction, re-industrialisation, jobs, local resources Waste «Black» CO 2 Use Products Chemicals Energy Fossile resources
Our playground: KET IB & Bio economy Biotechnology is the use of biological processes, organisms, or systems to manufacture products intended to improve the quality of human life The colours of Biotechnology: Red Biotechnology medical biotechnology: e.g. vaccines, insuline Green Biotechnology plant biotechnology : e.g. plant resistant to insects, diseases White Biotechnology Industrial Biotechnology e.g. enzyme washing powders
Our playground: KET IB & Bio economy White Biotechnology : The use of microorganisms and their enzymes to produce chemical substances, materials and bio-energy from renewable resources Performant, robust & cost efficient biocatalysts: - Non food part Biomass is more recalcitrant - Hydrolysates are a soup
Deployment IB & Bio economy: What s missing? Research: turning money into knowledge mainly (bio)catalyst development (IP) typically lab enviroment Scientists Innovation: turning knowledge into money Techno economical feasibility, LCA? Market validation & value chains >> Prototypes Requires: Process & down stream process development thus >> larger infrastructure/ hardware >> expertise, skills / software or people >> Money & time
Deployment IB & Bio economy: What s missing? IB & Bio Economy: Risky: uncertain political climate (CO2 taxes, incentives, penalties,. ) see eg biofuels Low risk premium & longer payback time : profit margins lower than in e.g. pharma or red biotech >> difficult to convince management and/ or private investors Shared Pilot Facilities = risk sharing/reduction

Consortia projects Geographical distribution of European project partners within consortia based projects
Upscaling & validation Micro-organisms activities Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant Performance check co fermenting yeast at high solids SSF (20-30% DS) ( Enzymatic hydrolysis at high DS: inhibition C5?) De-ashed waste paper, SAA-fractionated cornstover & myscanthus GlobalYeast is a Belgian-Brazilian biotechnology startup focused on developing and deploying products and solutions for the fermentation industry.
PULP2VALUE Processing Underutilised Low value sugar beet Pulp into VALUE added products Scope of the project PULP2VALUE aims to extract between 20 and 50 times more value from sugar beet pulp (approx. 13 million tonnes annually in Europe). To obtain this, multiple extraction techniques were developed to isolate more valuable products from the pulp. Activities of Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant Identification, optimization and Integration unit operations Production prototypes for application development & market testing
http://www.nweurope.eu/projects/project-search/bio-innovation-supportfor-entrepreneurs-throughout-nwe-regions/ We support SMEs and start-ups in the biobased sector training & networking We offer financial support towards services that can help the company to bring their innovation to market: 100 K max, 50-100% funded Network of expert organisation: terms of reference http://www.nweurope.eu/media/1396/biobase4sme_innovation-coupon_terms-of-reference_final_sept16.pdf
SmartPilots aims to improve regional policies to provide support in a cost-effective and impact oriented manner. This will be done by: Optimizing direct support for shared pilot facilities Optimizing indirect support i.e. direct support for users of shared pilot facilities Facilitating interregional cooperation regarding Shared Pilot Facilities.
Experience & recommendation - From research to innovation, but. innovation trajectory not linear, iterations required - Open acces multipurpose pilot/demo facilities to reduce: - technological/financial risk - time to market - Critical mass (Staff & equipment) key factor for success, avoid scattering of resources - To save money: Fail Fast value chain approach with pilot/demo activities, - appropriate funding rates for innovation actions
