1 THE ORGANIZATION Hamlin Fistula USA (HFUSA) is dedicated to the treatment, care, and prevention of childbirth injuries in Ethiopia injuries that leave women devastated emotionally, debilitated physically, and isolated from their families and community. Severe childbirth injuries occur far too often in countries like Ethiopia, where millions of women lack access to the maternal health resources that could prevent them. HFUSA raises funds and awareness to support Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (HFE), which runs the world-renowned network of Hamlin Fistula hospitals and the Hamlin College of Midwives. Obstetric fistula results from obstructed labor and renders women unable to control leakage of urine and feces. HFE addresses this terrible condition from several angles, making it possible for patients in Ethiopia to receive world-class treatment and compassionate care, and educating a generation of highly trained midwives to prevent fistula and other childbirth injuries in the future. Established in 1974 by pioneering doctors Reginald and Catherine Hamlin, the family of Hamlin Fistula hospitals has provided treatment for more than 40,000 women with a success rate of over 90 percent, and provides training to medical experts from around the world. HFUSA believes that all women, regardless of their economic circumstances, deserve the opportunity for recovery and renewal that treatment brings. Above all, the organization is working towards a future in which treatment is no longer necessary and childbirth injuries are as uncommon in Ethiopia as in the United States.
