Harvi Iron Ore Mine ML No 2290) of M/s V.S.Lad & Sons is one of the noteworthy iron ore mine in the Sandur-Hospet-Bellary sector. It is located in the Devadari gudda range of Sandur Schist Belt, near Lakshmipura village, Sandur Tq, Bellary Dt. The mining lease no. is 2290 and is spread over an area of 105.06 Ha. The present lease period is valid up to 31.07.2016. Nearest port is at Marmugoa, Goa at about 350km. It forms ridge/plateau of the hill range, known locally as Devadarigudda, running NNW-SSE and its slopes. Highest elevation being 1029mRL and lowest one is at 620mRL. Steep BHQ reef escarpments are major land forms. Seasonal nallahs originate from the area and culminate into Nariahalla, a stream flowing in northwest. Salient Features Of Mining 1

Executive Summary of Iron ore mine of S J Harvi The mine will be operated by Mechanized open cast mining method The estimated mineable reserves are about 36.44 million tons The average annual production will be about 3.1 million TPA iron ore in the mining period The life of mine is approximately 12 years Ripper dozer & potable compressors will be used for drilling. Blasting is done using slurry type of explosives The waste material to be handled for the life of the mine will be about 23.06 million tonnes and will be dumped in an area of 19.38 ha. Impacts Mining operations, generates dust and emissions due to transportation of ore from the mines and the movement of trucks on unpaved surfaces. The impacts on air are mainly due to generation of dust during loading, unloading and transportation of ore and emissions such as SPM/SO 2 /NO x from the transporting trucks. The trucks carrying ore will be covered with tarpaulin to prevent dust dissemination during transportation. 3

The results obtained were well within the limits. 4

Proper and timely maintenance of mining machinery Provision of earmuffs/ear plugs to workers in noise prone zones in the mine Selection of suitable machinery and equipment, proper mounting of equipment, providing noise insulation/padding wherever practicable and machinery fitted with properly designed silencers Proper maintenance of noise generating parts of the machine Provision of earmuffs to workers as a measure to protect their ears Thick plantation in and around the mine Proper gradient of haul roads to reduce cumulative noise levels To carry out noise surveys during different seasons at the mine Water Quality Two Surface water and three ground water samples were collected to assess the water quality in the study area. Impacts on Water Environment Mining activities cause adverse impacts due to mine drainage, Siltation due to storm water and contaminated water from domestic sewage water. The impact on water environment has been considered under the following heads: Water consumption Mine seepage and impact on ground water Impact on surface water bodies Storm water management Soil Quality Three locations were selected for analyzing the soil quality status in the study area. The soil samples were collected from the agricultural lands from the buffer zone areas. Location of Soil Sampling Stations S. Although the study area is within the reserve forest, sparse cover of vegetation 6

Executive Summary of Iron ore mine of S J Harvi is seen. There are some small animals like dog, cat, varieties of snake, mouse and common birds can be found. Waste Management Nature BHQ s and shale are the waste material to be handled. These are non-saleable material, especially BHQ. This may find market in future. Hence this will be dumped separately. Dumping Site About 19.38 ha non mineralized area has been identified and earmarked for dumping. The overburden /rejects generated is about 23.06 million tones during the life of mine. The contour trenching will be done on slopes of dump and plantation will be taken up. Maximum Height & Spread of Dumps Total height of dump is proposed as 20 meter with an angle of repose at 30 to 35 degree. The waste material will be dumped systematically in the designated area stepwise with reverse slopes. Static dump tops and slopes will be stabilized by planting tall saplings, grass and good root bearing saplings such as Agava. Sub grade Mineral Management About 10% of the production is sub grade. In five years period about 1.6 million tons of sub grade iron ore (+55 to -58% Fe) can be generated. This material will be stacked aside will be sold either by blending with high grade ore or directly. Stabilization of Dumps The precautionary measures to ensure dump stability include Garland drains to channelize the rainwater out of the dumping area. Sufficient numbers of Checkdams / Toe-walls of suitable size are constructed around the base of the dumps to prevent sliding and wash off of the material. Afforestation will also be carried out along with the other precautionary methods. Afforestation Plan RECLAMATION / AFFORESTATION PROGRAMME: It was proposed to go for back filling of the mined out pits. But none of the mining pits are completely extracted at the end of previous mining scheme period and all of them are active on date. As part of the progressive reclamation as well as soil conservation measures it was proposed to take-up construction of 4 cheek-dams, 4 retention walls and 400m of garland drains. The species to be grown in the areas should be dust tolerant and fast growing species so that a permanent green belt is created. Apart from above green belts are proposed surrounding the proposed ML area and along the permanent approach roads to the mine.. Deciduas and semi-deciduas plants are proposed to improve the soil quality with humus and carbon content. It is also proposed to carry out plantation during the subsequent years to fill the gaps of those plants which have not survived. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY MEASURES Providing a working environment that is conducive to safety & health The management of occupational safety & health is the prime responsibility of mine management from the executive level to the first line supervisory level Employee involvement and commitment in the implementation of health and safety guidelines Provision of all necessary resources The company shall engage a full time qualified doctor who is trained in occupational health. Periodic monitoring for exposure to mineral dust on the workers shall be conducted and records maintained including health records of the workers. 9

Executive Summary of Iron ore mine of S J Harvi Implementing safety and health management system and assessing the effectiveness through periodic audits Setting of safety and health objectives based on comprehensive strategic plans and measure performance against these plans Monitoring the effects of mining activities on safety and health and conducting regular performance reviews Awareness programme for workers on impact of mining on their health and identification of work related health hazards, training on malaria eradication, HIV, and health effects on exposure to mineral dust etc. Provision of necessary personal protective equipments Establishing and maintaining a system of medical surveillance for employees Ensuring employees at all levels receive appropriate training and are competent to carry out their duties and responsibilities The company shall engage a full time qualified doctor who is trained in occupational health. Periodic monitoring for exposure to mineral dust on the workers shall be conducted and records maintained including health records of the workers. WILD LIFE MANAGEMENT The mine lease area is a forest land. To protect the wild life from any damage the mining area will be fenced properly with the wire link mesh. This will prevent inadvertent entry of animals in to the mine area. Further, if approved by the forest department, solar fencing will be provided surrounding the ML to prevent straying of wildlife. Slat licks and water holes will be provided for animals in the forest area in consultation with the Forest Department. Workings will be restricted to daytime only in order to prevent any disturbance to wildlife in night. No blasting operations are proposed in the night time, which will disturb the wild life, while they are in search for food. Mine management has decided to depute 4 firewatchers and 4 forest watchers in order to manage the wildlife & forest in better manner. Total manpower of 8 will be appointed for the forest and wildlife management. Annual health checkup for these employees will also be done along with other mine employees. Budget according to Rs.2000 per annum is fixed for these 8 employees. The land use of area will be improvised through afforestation and by creation of surface water resources and leaves behind a congenial environment for immigration of wild life.
