Innovation A track record of delivering innovative soltions in response to the indstry s most complex technical challenges Challenges and soltions Developing soltions to some of the nclear indstry s most complex challenges is second natre Or innovative soltions are applied across the fll lifecycle, from sampling radioactive waste on site, radiochemical characterisation in or laboratories, and eqipment and process trials, right throgh to developing bespoke, fit-for-prpose design soltions. We take the time to trly nderstand or cstomers complex isses and drive innovation in or soltions to best meet their needs. SIAL Immobilisation and solidification of radioactive waste streams Amec Foster Wheeler developed an innovative geopolymer SIAL matrix for the immobilisation and solidification of different radioactive waste streams, inclding borates. The SIAL process allows fast, safe and cost-effective immobilisation and transformation of radioactive waste, sch as sldge, resins and soils into a solid form, which is sitable for long-term storage or disposal. This tried and tested technology (approximately 170 tonnes of waste immobilised) is applied by a mobile facility. It enables the easy retrieval of spent resins and sldge to treat them at room temperatre within a 30 60-minte timeframe. The parameters of the final prodct, waste fixed in the SIAL matrix, are in most cases better than treatment by cementation or bitminisation. ScanSort and ScanPlot Radiation detection and measrement technology Amec Foster Wheeler provides rapid and accrate radioactive soil sorting, srveying and monitoring services sing advanced radiation detection and measrement technology that is niqe to Amec Foster Wheeler. ScanSort is a conveyor-based system that srveys, monitors and sorts material by segregating scanned material into above-criteria and below-criteria discharge piles. ScanPlot is a mobile system that performs srface and shallow-depth radiological examination and characterisation of p to 20 acres of open land per day. It provides instant otpt in a cstomisable GIS report format and delivers spatially precise maps with plotted locations of detected radioactivity, inclding concentrations of each radioactive isotope detected and measred. ScanSort and ScanPlot are available as either part of or overall environmental characterisation and remediation services for radioactive material, or as stand-alone services We provide the technology as a fll trnkey service with hardware and software, in addition to engineers and technicians to set p and operate the systems The combination of or long indstry experience, or world-class technical knowledge and innovative, pragmatic ethos means we can find soltions where others only see problems. We have the niqe capability not only to develop conceptal pragmatic innovations, bt to flly develop and prove these soltions throgh or prpose-bilt testing and trialling facilities, as well as or extensive radiological laboratories. Czech Repblic Closre of a radioactive waste disposal chamber Cstomer: Radioactive Waste Repository Agency Location: Czech Repblic Scope: Re-treatment and characterisation of radioactive waste at a waste repository. This exemplar project involved the re-treatment and characterisation of radioactive waste disposed at the Richard Waste Repository; a former limestone mine sed to store radioactive waste since 1964. Amec Foster Wheeler processed contaminated material, which posed a risk to the srronding environment. Amec Foster Wheeler developed an inventory of the radioactive waste stored in the repository s drms, ndertook drm inspection and dose rate measrements, and in some cases gamma spectrometric analyses. Trawsfynydd pond scabbling and frnitre removal Cstomer: Magnox Ltd Location: Trawsfynydd Ponds Bilding, North Wales, UK Scope: Design and implementation of a remediation soltion for contaminated ponds. This project involved decontaminating the srface of the former spent nclear fel cooling pond by removing the srface of the concrete strctres throgh scabbling. Scabbling was deployed remotely and removed p to a depth of 40mm of the contaminated concrete srface. The waste was vacm extracted from the scabbling head into hoppers and disposed of via approved waste transportation rotes. The project also involved the de-planting and size redction of pond frnitre remaining from active operations. Innovative deployment of eqipment via shield decks delivered savings in cost and time, and sbstantially redced the volme of low-level waste generated by the project Operational improvements led to a 25% redction in scabbling time Innovations with eqipment design increased prodctivity with the scabbling process This technology is characterised by excellent mechanical and physical properties, very high mechanical strength and low leachability of the immobilised components. Minimisation of radioactive waste volme - throgh the solidification of sldge and dewatered resins in the SIAL matrix, the prodction of drms is only one qarter of the nmber reached compared to a cement matrix, saving storage capacity in repository Mobility, which allows in-sit operations and in-sit waste treatment To control the volme of radioactive waste, compactable drms were compressed and non-compactable drms were repackaged. All the processed waste was sbseqently transferred to a disposal chamber and immobilised in concrete. Sccessflly operating radioactive waste repository, with reprocessed and safely stored radioactive waste All relevant safety reqirements met Updated information and database of historical waste stored in waste repository 10 Nclear decommissioning and clean-p Nclear decommissioning and clean-p 11
