Brisbane Domestic Terminal Wayfinding Signage Manual Brisbane Airport Corporation Pty Ltd Final Issue C December 202

FOREWORD This manual describes the wayfi nding signage at the Brisbane Airport Domestic terminal. The aim of the signage system is to ensure that all wayfi nding signs meet the quality standards of aesthetic appeal, uniformity and simplicity while being highly functional in providing effective wayfi nding. There is currently a specifi c set of issues that need to be addressed. These include: preventing uncontrolled ad hoc signage being produced decluttering the environment removing unnecessary signage meeting current compliance with the Disability (Access to Premises Buildings) Standards 200 The manual is to be used for ongoing management and maintenance of the sign system.

INTRODUCTION This signage manual illustrates and specifi es all of the signage types required for effective wayfi nding at the Brisbane Domestic Terminal. These sign types are divided into various categories based on function. This manual is divided into sections to assist in the understanding of all the elements that make up an effective wayfi nding system. It describes the principles of the wayfi nding strategy, and provides a sign selection guide and the visual graphic standards and details each sign type. A typical sign location plan and sign schedule is prepared in Section E. Review and Approvals Process It is vital to ensure that the signage provided for each project provides effective wayfi nding in the termninal. It is envisaged that proposals are assessed and approved by Airport personnel familiar with facility operations, particularly in respect to site accessibility, to ensure the effectiveness of the overall wayfi nding signage of the facility is maintained. Guidance may also be sought from an access consultant once a wayfi nding design package is developed.

Wayfi nding Strategy Wayfinding Principles Accessibility A

SECTION A WAYFINDING PRINCIPLES The fundamental principles of the wayfi nding signage uses the progressive disclosure technique of providing information. This helps to maintain the focus of a visitor s attention by reducing clutter and confusion, and cognitive workload. This improves the legibility of the signs by presenting only the minimum amount of information required to get to the next decision point. These principles are as follows: Identify the check-in counters identify all lifts and stairs identify all other facilities such as toilets, parents rooms and fi rst aid rooms Identify all services and processes provide directional signs to all of the destinations identifi ed above, in a hierarchical list based on distance, i.e. closest destination is listed fi rst) show accessible paths to destinations, if different from main pathway maintain a hierarchical level of information for the user provide other signage that regulates behaviour and activities when required when directing to exit, provide direction to main building entrance use internationally recognised pictograms and English text all names and terms to be consistent, user friendly and easily understood continue the signage through the whole visitor experience from arrival to exit. International Guidelines (ICAO, Third Edition 993) The following principles must also be considered as part of the ongoing development of the terminal Wayfi nding signs should not be obscured by obstructions or have to compete with advertising or other signs, and Readability should not be sacrifi ced to décor or aesthetics To ensure the performance and visibility of wayfi nding signs, BAC must maintain the environment affecting users of the site. This will eliminate any potential obstructions. Key Objectives and Approach to Wayfinding The objectives of the signage/wayfi nding package are to support wayfi nding and the orientation and mobility of all users to and within the Airport facilities, and to enable all users to effectively orientate themselves and identify accessible paths of travel and Airport features, amenities and areas of interest including: all amenities (e.g. accessible sanitary facilities, lifts) which may be of particular importance for people with a disability, travellers facilities (e.g. luggage trolley bays, car park payment machines) safety features. A holistic, facility wide approach is required to signage, wayfi nding, orientation and mobility. The signage/wayfi nding system is required to work in conjunction with orientation cues and legibility of the Airport which shall be affected by additional factors, including: the layout and planning of the facility (e.g. fl oor plan layout), transparency and sightlines within the facility (e.g. long range views, glazing elements). architectural features and landmarks (which may include visual, tactile and acoustic cues and features such as supergraphics), and colours, fi nishes and materials of building elements (e.g. colour contrast between elements such as walls and fl oors, changes in fl oor fi nishes such as from ceramic tiles to carpet). It is recommended that an overarching legibility and wayfi nding strategy be undertaken in order to maximise the effectiveness of the signage/wayfi nding package. This includes ways in which the installed signage may effectively support and work in conjunction with: the existing planning/architectural features (e.g. building/facility layout and sightlines), interior design features (e.g. supergraphics), airport management and operational policies and procedures (e.g. accessible pick-up and set-down areas, accessible car parking), both permanent and temporary signage, the totality of the installed signage within the facility A-

SECTION A ACCESSIBILITY Design Standards The design standards ensure that signage installations shall meet or exceed the minimum requirements of Part H2 of the Disability (Access to Premises - Buildings) Standards 200. Hence AS 428. (2009) has been adopted in lieu of AS 428.(200) as specifi ed by Part H2. In addition the requirements of AS 428.2(992) with regard to the location of signage with respect to decision points and mounting locations with the exception of overhead signage (e.g. primary directional sign S7.). The following describes the standards that the signage design is based on. Locating Signage Airport travel may be a time of anxiety and stress for some users. It is important that users are not presented with misguided information that leads them in the wrong direction. This may not only create frustration and stress, but waste a person s limited energy reserves. Therefore, it is important that a successful wayfi nding/signage system supports all users in a manner consistent with the spirit and intent of the Disability Discrimination Act. The signage system is to minimise any anxiety or confusion experienced by users unfamiliar with the Airport environment. To this effect, signage must be clear, consistent and concise and incorporate the following: The signage scheme must be concise with only the required signage installed to support users. It is important that the amount of visual information provided is manageable and not overwhelming to users. Redundant signage and visual clutter should be avoided. Sign faces must have low refl ectivity of ambient light. Signage shall be located at reasonable and appropriate decision making points along paths of travel in order to support and reassure users. At points such as T intersections it may be appropriate to locate signage in opposing directions such that they are readily apparent by people travelling in both directions towards the intersection. Signage to be located with consideration to: - the direct paths of travel which users shall take through the facility - decision making points along paths of travel - ensuring signage itself does not create a hazard (e.g. overhead FIDS screens) - the installed signage is not obstructed during Airport operations. Signage of the same type to be mounted at consistent heights. Wall and fl oor mounted signage designed to be viewed at eye level must be located such that it is visible for both seated and standing adults in accordance with AS 428.2 (992) Figure 30. Refer to Figure 30 (left) Zones for Viewing and Common Viewing. AS 428.2 (992). Room signage to be located on the latch side of the door with the leading edge of the signage located between 50-300mm from the architrave. - Where it is not possible, room signage may be located on the door itself, however this should be avoided as placing room signage on doors greatly reduces the effectiveness of the sign when the door is open. Identifi cation signage designed to be viewed at eye level should be located such that it is visible for both seated and standing adults in accordance with Figure 30 (left) AS 428.2 (992).. Final signage locations are to be verifi ed on site and to be approved by Airport personnel with an understanding of facility operations, particularly in respect to site accessibility (e.g. the locations of accessible facilities and procedures which may be in place to support users with a disability). Mandatory Signs In order to meet BCA 202 requirements, the following signage is required as a minimum all sanitary facilities, including accessible and ambulant disabilities. where a bank of sanitary facilities is not provided with an accessible sanitary facility, directional signage at the bank of sanitary facilities to locate the nearest accessible sanitary facility. where a pedestrian entrance is not accessible, directional signage at the inaccessible entrance to locate the nearest accessible pedestrian entrance. where a room containing a hearing augmentation system is provided. to each passenger lift. at each accessible car parking space. Accessible Zone Accessible text zone and permissible accessible text zone are the allowed areas where tactile text and Braille should appear on any sign, so that it can be read (sensed) by disabled people sitting in a wheelchair without being too low for visually impaired people who are standing by the sign. Design Codes and Data References Signage will conform to the following design standards for access and mobility: AS 428. 2009 General requirements for access - New building work AS 428.2 992 Enhanced and additional requirements - Buildings and facilities AS 428.4. 2009 Tactile indicators Building Code of Austratlia BCA 20 Clause D3.6, Clause H2.0 Disability Discrimination Act 992 (DDA) Disability Standards for Accessible Public Transport 2002 (DSAPT) Disability (Access to Premises - Buildings) Standards 200 (The Premises Standards). Note: Part H2 applies AS 428.5 (200) Design for access and mobility Part 5: Communication for people who are deaf or hearing impaired AS 735.2 (999) Lifts, escalators and moving walks Part 2: Facilities for persons with disabilities International signs to provide guidance to persons at airports and marine terminals (ICAO, third edition, 993).
