Petra Nova / WA Parish - Carbon Capture This will be one of the largest Post Combustion Carbon Capture System (CCS) in the world at 240 MW (5,000 tpd). It will be constructed at WA Parish (just outside Houston, TX) to be used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) operations on the Texas Gulf Coast beginning with the West Ranch oilfield in 2017. $1 billion project Component Project Size Location Capture Technology Detail 240MW slipstream off of Unit 8, 650 MW unit ( 5,000 tpd) WA Parish Power Plant - Thompsons, TX (about 25 miles SW of Houston, TX) MHIA's KM-CDR advanced amine-based C02 absorption technology Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) Capital Sources EOR is expected to boost oil production at the West Ranch oilfield from around 500 barrels per day to approximately 15,000 barrels per day. CO 2 will be transported in and 82-mile pipeline. 3 Equity Partners, Bank Finance support, DOE Grant Schedule 3 year construction effort. Startup late 2016 to early 2017 8

Petra Nova / WA Parish - Project Overview 10
Typical Integration of CCS v. Petra Nova Typical Steam for the CCS is from the turbine steam cycle: IP to LP Turbine. The changes the steam cycle may result in offdesign operating conditions. Electricity is from the unit Net electrical output is reduced by about 30% Petra Nova Steam and electricity for the CCS is from the combustion turbine and HRSG The same amount of steam and electricity is needed but the CT/HRSG is more efficient and the coal unit s steam cycle is not changed 11

Conclusion The Petra Nova CCS Project is one of the few that is going forward. At 240 MW it is one of the largest CCS Projects in the world The economics depend on the use of the captured CO 2 for EOR. The use of the GT/HRSG for steam and electricity has benefits 19
