The next generation anti-fouling and coating Biocidefree Copperfree Copperbased steen-hansen.com

Steen-Hansen is currently launching the next generation of impregnation products We offer 3 different alternatives for our aquaculture customers: - Copper-based products - Copper-free products - Biocide-free products Through close co-operation with Janssen PMP, we are introducing a new, organic biocide it has a short decomposition time and is extremely effective. Econea We are also continuing to supply our current bestsellers, made even more effective by improved formulae. HALT-lab We have developed a unique laboratory to test product efficiency, sinking speed and resistance to mechanical abrasion. HALT stands for Highly Accelerated Lifetime Testing. The laboratory is central in our efforts towards developing even more effective and environmentally friendly products. Read more about the next generation of impregnation products in this brochure. Fish welfare in clean nets - Reduces the environmental footprint - Econea, organic substance - Improved formula

Copper-based products Copper has been used as an anti-fouling agent for hundreds of years. It is a natural substance that is essential in order to ensure the normal growth of most plants and animals. The well-proven properties of copper, which provide general protection against fouling and have minimal effect on the environment, have made it the first choice among anti-fouling products. The type of copper usually used to prevent fouling is copper oxide (Cu 2 O). It is produced from recycled pipes, cables, fridges, etc. Copper oxide works against fouling caused by both algae and animals, and the effect lasts as long as the coating emits a sufficient level of concentration. In the sediments, copper is quickly converted into harmless, non-bioactive compounds. At Steen-Hansen we have developed impregnation products with so-called boosters. That means we use substances that complement copper and provide extended protection against hydroids and other problematic species. The combined effect of copper oxide with Econea or CuSCN results in extra protection in the sea at the same time as it reduces the effect on the environment. AquaNet Premium and AquaNet 360 are product series that utilise the increased effect from boosters biocides. And they have significantly reduced copper content. AquaNet PREMIUM AquaNet ULTRA AquaNet 360 Anti-fouling protection after 100 days, compared to a reference sample

The new anti-fouling from Steen-Hansen got very favourable feedback from the operators. All anti-fouling seems to be working well at first, and the differences appear after many months in the sea. Jacob Palmer Meland Managing director, Lovundlaks AS Lovundlaks on the Helgeland Coast - in the vicinity of the Arctic Circle - has used AquaNet Ultra from Steen-Hansen on its netcages since the fall of 2016. With good results.

Copper-free products The range of effective substances used in the aquaculture industry stems from the much bigger market for anti-fouling in the shipping industry. However, when a substance is going to be used to protect aquaculture nets, there are added considerations to be made with regard to the proximity of food production and the safety of employees. Steen-Hansen has tested all substances permitted for marine use. In co-operation with Janssen PMP, Econea has been identified as the best candidate: A high level of effectiveness, a long protection time, and the fact that it is organically degradable, makes Econea particularly suitable for use in aquaculture. Combined with increased resistance to mechanical impact and an in-built protection against algae, Steen-Hansen s copper-free impregnation products are a good choice for the future of aquaculture. AquaNet Protect is a copper-free, Econea - based product series from Steen-Hansen. Fouling protection after 140 days in the sea vs reference sample. AquaNet PROTECT

Biocide-free products Cleaning nets in the sea is an alternative to using anti-fouling substances and changing the nets. This method usually involves the use of a high pressure washer in order to remove fouling. Washing in this manner can lead to extra wear and tear on the nets, and it is important to protect the net fibres as best possible. A smooth, sealed surface will also reduce washing time and restrict the roots of fouling species. A good biocide-free coating must tolerate frequent washing and mechanical impact. At the same time it needs to protect the positive net properties such as rupture strength, flexibility and elasticity. Steen-Hansen s NetCoating HD has been developed as a multi-generation product, which means it will not be washed off when the net is being serviced. The surface is described as «high density», i.e. it offers a negative environment for the roots of species we want to avoid. High Density surface enables quicker in-situ washing. NetCoating HD

Research and development Steen-Hansen places considerable emphasis on product development. We aim to be at the forefront and offer fish farmers the best solutions, both in financial terms and in relation to fish welfare and the environment. We have introduced «product stewardship» as our guideline when developing new technology. That means that we look at the total picture; our products must be safe, recyclable and effective during production, application, in the sea and as waste. Their environmental footprint must be acceptable at all times. That is why we have established a specialised laboratory, HALT (highly accelerated lifetime testing), which can test and simulate the conditions to which nets are exposed. This is why we use recycled copper and have introduced a recycling system for transport containers. This is why we have invested in understanding the biology of fouling species and disseminating information about clean nets. Steen-Hansen co-operates closely with fish Steen-Hansen co-operates closely with fish farmers, netlofts and research institutions. RISE, IMR, UNI Environment, UiB and Janssen PMP are examples of external research bodies that are working with us,contributing to the development of impregnation products for the future. We are leading the race with better and biodegradable substances, always within what is safe for human and fish health. The goal is clear: Fish welfare in clean nets. Elasticity and rupture strength on nets with different coating.

All anti-fouling impregnation products must be approved in accordance with this regulation. This will ensure that the products are safe to use. The health risk to workers who come into contact with nets and the danger to fish and the environment must be documented. All Steen-Hansen products are carefully tested and risk-evaluated before they are released onto the market.

About Steen-Hansen Steen-Hansen develops and produces specialised coatings for industry and challenging environments both on shore and at sea. The company aims to be a benchmark supplier of impregnation products for nets and other materials in the sea. We will contribute to sustainable development within our markets as a long-term and attractive partner for customers and employees. We are a privately-owned company with all our production and development activities based in Norway. Steen-Hansen is a market leader in antifouling products and coatings for aquaculture nets, with a presence in most industrialised aquaculture regions (including Norway, Chile, UK, and the Mediterranean). Our aim is to offer the best impregnation and coating products on the market in order to help our customers keep their nets clean: The goal is clear: We want to contribute to fish welfare in clean nets. We co-operate with a range of companies and research institutions in Norway and abroad, and we have a stated aim to contribute to the reduction of the use of copper in the aquaculture industry in Norway and around the world. Our new product portfolio demonstrates that we have taken a major step towards achieving this goal. Steen-Hansen is ISO-certified in accordance with ISO 14001 (environment) and ISO 9001 (quality).

Knowledge and focus Biology steers what we do. Our expertise regarding biology, causalities and species is a central element in our work of manufacturing the products needed by the aquaculture industry. Book on Fouling It started with the Book on Fouling in 2013. We have now distributed more than 25 000 copies of the book, with new orders coming in every week throughout the year, from Norway, the UK, Chile and the Mediterranean area. It is and will remain free of charge, with neutral information and no product details. Biological trials and investigations In co-operation with Uni Environment we have looked more closely into the degree of truth in the theory that disease-causing pathogens can live in the fouling on aquaculture nets. They can. We have also received a considerable amount of regional research funding in order to investigate methods and products that can reduce the risk of disease outbreaks resulting from such pathogens in the fouling. NetCare Certified The correct use and application of our products is important to attain the required effect. Steen-Hansen has consequently developed a training program, ensuring a better understanding of chemistry and biology for the operator. Net Care Certified is part of our goal to be a leading company within Product Stewardship. This ensures high quality and focus on HMS and the environment in the entire lifecycle of the nets. All servicestations/ netlofts and operators using our products are awarded a certificate as proof of completed training. www.bookonfouling.com
