Saerbeck plus - A Community On It s Way To A Future With Renewable Energies EUREGIO - 16 May 2014

Saerbeck! small village in rural environment! 7.200 inhabitants increasing poulation up to 10.000 till 2030 very good infrastructure (schools, education, active commmunity living) 2.100 jobs in local industries

Saerbeck Climate Municipality of The Future 2009 winner of a competition of all communities in the Federal- State of Nordrhein-Westfalen IKKK: Integrated Concept for Climate Protection and Climate Adaptaion to reduce the CO2- emissions to a zero level the latest in 2030! embeding the people of Saerbek since the beginning 3 charts: energy demand (blue) renewable energies (red) CO 2 -emissions (green)!

Our Roadmap more than 150 activities 3 lead-projects

Lead Project 1: Sunny Side of Saerbeck Akteure des Fragebogens!

Lead Project 1: questioning of all households cooperation with the schools! presentation of the results by the pupils aim:to make the citizens of Saerbeck part of the project of the Klimakommune by e.g planting PVpanels on their roofs march 2014: nearly 440 PV units of about 9,9 Mw peak are installed (only in the village on the roofs of privat buildungs, farm houses and schools) = 25% production of the local energy supply

Lead Project 2: Saerbecker Insight Making future energies transparent!

Lead Project: 1.Central Heating Unit for community buldings based on wooden pellets central heating feeded with wood (pellets) in 2010 substitution of the former gas maintainance local heat-network length of about 700 m in 2 sections (2010, 2013) supply of 2 schools, several sport facilities, a kindergarden

2. The Energy-Experience Path! to explain the global climate change 10 POI s (glassy sidewalk, e-power station for pedelecs, poster of lots of paintings of all the pupils of the elementary school) to give exemples for everyone to participate in saving energy, in using renewable energies for heating and lighting presentation for non-experts (to inform, to make think about) embedding all acting people along the path

Education: The Energy-Experience-Path! Making renewable energies transparent:! Explaining how it works!! This is very simply done!! Everybody is able to do it!!

Learning by Doing!!4. steps of climate education policy " from kindergarden to high school!! Forscherpass für Klimaschützer (kindergarden kids)!!school courses and project-days for schools in the heating central für local and regional schools (every pupil ofsaerbeck schools)!!project-cooperation wirth the local schools (intergration of climate projects in the learning units)!!cooperation with regional universities e.x. FH Steinfurt: Gebäude.Energie.Umwelt!! kids-university!!and and and...! Projekttag an der Heizzentrale 2011!

more and more visitors!!! 2011: 1.985! 2012: 3.355! 2013: 7.093 (+ 20.000)! # : 12.433!!

Lead Project 2: Evaluation 2012! power supply:! -35 %! heating:! -23 %! CO 2 -emissions:! -27 %!

Wettbewerb KWK-Modellkommune NRW Gemeinde Saerbeck

POWER TO THE PEOPLE 1: How it works!! ideally! financially! practically!

Lead Project 3:! Bioenergy Parc!

Main Project: The Bioenergy-Parc a former munition camp of the army 1,5 km away from the village (90 ha) in ownership of the community since 01.01.2011

Solar-Power-Parc -!using the bunker walls for the installation of PV (2012) -! capacity of 5,7 Mw peak (= energy need of 1700 households) -! owner/investment by the local Cooperative See

Energy from Biomass-Plants -! energetic use and material utlisisation (mass flow management of biomass input and output) -! 1 biogas plant in 2011(SaerGAS, 1MW el ) -! ownded by local farmers -! 1 composting plant: -! fermentation of all bilogical waste of the Kreis (= County) Steinfurt, 45.000 tons /year Biogasanlagen Bioabfallbehandlungsanlage

The Windfield-Power-Parc 7 wind turbines of 3 Megawatt each (3.000.000 kw) height: 199,5 meters hub height: 149 meters diameter of the rotor: 101 meters

The Role of Local Investments total invest of 70 Mio.! in the bioenergyparc Major of Saerbeck: All investments will be done by local money from small to big moneybags e.g. the cooperation Energy for Saerbeck -! one of the most powerful investors in the bioenergy pac -! 400 inhabitants with 4 Mio!, minmum investment: 1.000!, maximum investment: 20.000! -! PV-Power-Parc and 1 windturbine -! total investment of 15 Mio! in the bioenergy parc - rate of return: 9,5 % /1rst year

The Role of Participation the whole planning processus was worked out by the community (and not an investor!!!) 3 sources of revenues: benefits of the own wind turbine, rent, taxes! the returns will be reinvested in local projects (social, educational, climate) creating such a sort of local value added system is the best motivation for participation and acceptance for the people and a business model for communities the inhabitants will become their own energy producers and users, this garantees a local acceptance on a bright level

State of the Art 03.2014... MWh 80.000 Strombereitstellung durch regenerative Energien 70.000 60.000 50.000 40.000 30.000! we reached our aim of self-producing our energy on base of renewable energies already in 2013 and not in 2030! the production of renewable energies will reach nearly the double of the local need (207%) 20.000 10.000 and this will not be the end... 0 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 next project: Bürgerwindpark Sinningen Biogas PV Strombedarf Windkraft Wasserkraft Strombedarf (erwartet)
