GENERAL DATA CONCERNING THE AGRICULTURAL SECTOR IN POLAND (CENTRAL STATISTICAL OFFICE (GUS): GENERAL AGRICULTURAL CENSUS 2010 CHARACTERISTICS OF AGRICULTURAL HOLDINGS, ) PUBLICATION: AUGUST 2012

IN JUNE 2010, THE NUMBER OF AGRICULTURAL HOLDINGS AMOUNTED TO 2277.6 THOUSAND.

Of 1562.6 thousand agricultural holdings of an area in excess of 1 ha of arable land 99.7% (1558.4 thousand) were individual farms. Private sector farms prevail in the Polish agricultural sector, with a majority of individual farms comprising 99.8% of all agricultural holdings.

THE MOST FARMS WERE REPORTED IN LESSER POLAND, SUBCARPATHIAN AND LUBLIN VOIVODESHIPS; THE FEWEST LUBUSZ, OPOLE AND WEST POMERANIAN VOIVODESHIPS:

THE HIGHEST SHARE OF FARMS OF AN AREA IN EXCESS OF 2 HA OF ARABLE LAND IN THE TOTAL NUMBER OF AGRICULTURAL HOLDINGS IN A VOIVODESHIP IS PRESENTED IN THE TABLE BELOW:

THE PERCENTAGE OF FARMS OF AN AREA OF 50 HA AND MORE IN THE VOIVODESHIPS: (łódzkie Lodz, pomorskie Pomeranian, warmińsko-mazurskie Warmian-Masurian, śląskie Silesian, świętokrzyskie Swietokrzyskie, mazowieckie - Masovian)

THE AVERAGE AREA OF AN AGRICULTURAL HOLDING PURSUING AN AGRICULTURALACTIVITY WAS AS FOLLOWS:

IN 2010, 54.7 THOUSAND AGRICULTURAL HOLDINGS (2.9% OF THE TOTAL NUMBER OF HOLDINGS PURSUING AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITY) WERE ENGAGED IN A BUSINESS ACTIVITY OTHER THAN THE AGRICULTURAL ONE DIRECTLY CONNECTED WITH RUNNING A FARM. Activity other than agricultural: Service activity using one's own equipment, Agritourism, Produce processing, Wood processing Handicraft, Aquaculture, Generating renewable energy for the market, Other activity (e.g. running a shop selling farm produce)

TERRITORIAL SPECIFICATION, ORIGIN OF POSTED EMPLOYEES

As per the currently binding regulations, the party in a labour inspector s proceedings is, in principle, the employer. Therefore, we do not have data concerning territorial specification, origin of posted employees.

PUBLIC AUTHORITIES STRATEGY (DATA: THE NATIONAL LABOUR INSPECTORATE (PIP), THE DISTRICT LABOUR INSPECTORATE IN ZIELONA GORA)

The activity of the Polish National Labour Inspectorate in the agricultural sector is mainly preventive. Entities pursuing an agricultural activity are subject to standard supervision within inspections conducted by labour inspectors.

Central activities

PIP schedule Prevention periodical activities LabourProtectionin Individual Farming - an informative and promotional program addressed to farmers and their families. Individual farms are included in the program. Purpose: increasing the general level of knowledge on farm work related threats, their consequences with respect to accidents and illness. The main aspects of the program are education and technical consultancy provided, among others, during farm inspections. Contests SafeSummer - a program for children and young people in rural areas. Safe Farm addressed to individual farmers National Art Competition"Safe Village Do Accidents Happenby Accident? In 2012, the 2nd edition of the Competition took place, organized by the Agricultural Social Insurance Fund and the National Labour Inspectorate. The competition aimed at promoting positive attitudes relating to work and play in rural areas, broadening knowledge on OSH in the farm, arousing and developing aesthetic sensitivity, as well as children and young people's individual creative skills.

In 2012, almost 37 thousand children from over 2,300 primary schools participated in the competition.

Regional activities (Lubusz Voivodeship)

STANDING COMMITTEES FOR THE DISTRICT LABOUR INSPECTOR The Lubusz Committee for Occupational Safety and Health Committee members: MPs; representatives of employers' organizations, trade unions, Lubusz institutions and authorities/departments. Sessions (once a year): District Labour Inspector's supervisory-control, preventive and informational activity, as well as promoting the farm work safety principles. COMPETITIONS / TRAINING / CONTESTS (2012 EXAMPLES) Contests for farmers on occupational safety and health in individual farming (the 8th edition in 2012) A contest for agricultural school students "Occupational Health and Safety in an Individual Farm Popularization of the issue of labour protection and inspiring farmers to undertake activities and create the desired culture with respect to occupational health and safety in the farm. In-kind prizes The contest was organized by the Agricultural Social Insurance Fund, Regional Branch in Zielona Gora and the District Labour Inspectorate. Traning on occupational health and safety in the agricultural sector. The meeting was organized by the Trade Union - National Centre of Young Farmers.

(1) Agricultural Social Insurance Fund (KRUS) a state institution responsible for farmers social insurance, conducting, among others, preventive activity, rehabilitation medicine and separated medical certification. (2) Lubusz Agricultural Chamber an agricultural self-government body acting to solve problems in the agricultural sector and representing the interest of its associated entities. (3) Trade Union National Centre of Young Farmers an agricultural professional organization of young people who run their own farms, are successors for family farms or study at agricultural schools (of all levels).
