The RETRACK pilot: Operational excellence in practice Mechelen, October 4th, 2011 J.Marg Transpetrol GmbH
Agenda Retrack Pilot / Demonstration Train Overview Retrack Pilot Operating Retrack Next Steps Impressions
Overview Retrack Pilot (1) The Retrack operation is a hub-based System consisting of fixed departures connecting the main hubs, supplemented by demand-driven antennae-trains from/to the respective hub. Retrack is explicitly designed to accommodate single wagons and wagon groups. Operative Framework: Main western hub is Cologne-Eifeltor with specific shunting team, tracks and direct link to connecting private rail-systems for local/regional distribution (i.e. TP-Liner s Tour de Ruhr ). Cologne is supplemented by infrastructure in Rotterdam-Waalhaven Main eastern hub is Györ, with connections to Sopron and numerous external rail transport services Up to 6 private railway companies are involved in the execution of a Retrack-train, supplemented by services of incumbents (exclusivly in Eastern Europe). Private Railways involved are normally: LTE Logistik (AT) (Member of Consortium) Central European Railways (HU) (Member of Consortium) Gysev (AT & HU) (external) Bräunert Verkehrsgesellschaft (D) (external) Rurtalbahn (D, NL & BE) (external) Mittelweserbahn (D) (external) Rotterdam Rail Feeding (NL, B) (external) Transpetrol Company Presentation, 16th-17th June 2011 in Siegburg, 2009 Transpetrol GmbH 03.1 3

Overview Retrack (7) So, what s innovative in the Retrack Pilot Train? The capability to accommodate less than blocktrain sized transports? Well, that has been there before! Border Crossing Rail Transport? Nothing new, either! New Technologies employed in the rail operation? As to the pilot, we re basically making use of proven technology! It is rather the approach of employing the possibilities of rail transport to the market demands, that really counts: The Retrack Pilot is the only international wagongroup rail product, which is privately operated (and thus.?) strictly oriented on the customers needs
Operating Retrack (1) The activities of the Retrack-Team of Transpetrol does cover following areas: Commercial: Sales, Calculation and Invoicing etc. Train Operating: Organising Antennas, procuring services from third parties (railways, forwarders, terminal, wagon providers, loading sites ) Planning of the Main Run Cologne-Györ Matching actual daily demand onto given capacities of the main run with related priorisation / communications Wagon fleet employment Railway Operations Germany => The central role is that of the Train Operator
Operating Retrack (2): Train Operating Key to Success! The Job of the Train Operator is to co-ordinate the various requirements of the market and operations with the capacities into a commercially & operationally sound train programme Customer requirements Customer Process Requirements (12+ Customers) Loading & Unloading Sites (20 + different sites) Product characteristics (permits, documents) Train Capacities Customer Requirements Capacity Management: Railways (up to 7): locos, personell etc. Rolling stock availability Hub Operations (free shunting tracks, shunting unit) Train Size Limits Infrastructure Restrictions Infrastructure / Train Path Schedulling in up to 5 Countries Operational & Commercial Optimisation! Weekly Train Program
Operating Retrack (1a): Main Run and Antenna-Planning Planning is a continuous process since no plan stands up to reality longer than 5 seconds..
Operating Retrack (1b): Booking as dynamic process Booking is the core element of capacity management and for train path management.
Operating Retrack (1c): Operational Control at all times with the available information is an art in itself.
Next Steps Building a Hub in Hungary Improvement of damaged wagon management Building up a regular antenna to Belgium exchange larger wagon groups against smaller wagon groups/ single wagons Increase of cooperation with complementary rail service providers Last but not least: New Customers.
