AEC3 Ltd Guggenheim Bilbao Try this in 2D
Migration from 2D to information Drawings following the 500 years old paper tradition 2D presentation with some structuring (layers) no data extraction and reuse along the value chain 3D Models usually done for visualization only complete models may be used for clash checks no data extraction and reuse in the value chain Building Information Models generation of plan and visualization (2D & 3D) data extraction and reuse enabled benefits along the value chain take-of of quantities, analyses, cost and schedule control, hand-over to facilities management, etc. AEC3 Ltd 2008,
value creation Challenge and Benefits BIM: value = reuse ^ 2 number of integrated processes more effort needed at the start technical creating the building information model, attributing it, sharing it cultural mind change, training, move all stakeholders along with benefits along the process consistent data, collision checking change management take-off quantities, estimate costs extraction for the structural analysis extraction for the thermal analysis construction management schedules for component supplies take-over into facility management <...> AEC3 Ltd 2008,

What is IFC? A specification of the things used in building construction so that they can be represented in a model and the relationships that exist between them Things may be: physical items (wall, window, door etc.) abstract ideas (process, constraint, approval) Relationships may be: grouping, association, aggregation, connection, sequence etc.
What IFC is not IFC cannot (and does not try to) specify everything in building construction Provides a user extension capability called property sets Property sets are a simple way to hold information
Why IFC? if there are no objects, there are only lines lines are dull computers can't do much with them I'm the relation of the window in the wall I m a wall I m a line errrr what am I? Exchange "relation?" what s that? I m a window and I m a line

Open standards Collaboration can be partly achieved when everyone uses the same software The main open collaboration standard for construction is the IFC model specification ISO/PAS 16739 Other collaboration standards include gbxml (energy) CityGML (city models) landxml (roads) CIS/2 (steelwork supply chain) AEC3 Ltd 2008,
IFC and Standards Current status The IFC 2x stable platform is current designated as ISO/PAS 16739 (PAS = Publicly Accessible Specification) Standardized in 2006 This is only a part of the model (promised to implementers as non-changing when 2x was released) Part of the same technical committee in ISO as 15926 Future The IFC 2x4 release is in development and is scheduled for release late 2008/early 2009 Intended that this will be submitted to ISO for full standardisation. New Work Item has been submitted Expected to be ready for ballot as ISO/IS 16739 in 2010
Other Standards IFD / ISO12006-3 Support to be included in IFC 2x4 Service Life Planning Use of IFC based exchange requirements and property sets proposed for ISO 15686 part 4. This will support LCA and LCC data sets. ISO 15926 Proposal to develop IFC as a façade to IFC 15926 through a proposed Fiatech/buildingSMART initiative CityGML Continuing conversation with emerging OGC standard for city mapping. IFC Explorer viewer from U.Karlsruhe supports both and mapping
