SECTION 09260 GYPSUM WALLBOARD SYSTEMS PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 SECTION INCLUDES A. Gypsum board at new wall partitions or where indicated on drawings. 1.2 REFERENCED STANDARDS A. ASTM C36 - Gypsum Wallboard B. ASTM C442 - Gypsum Backing Board C. ASTM 630 - Water-Resistant Gypsum Backing Board D. ASTM E119 - Fire Test of Building Construction and Materials E. Gypsum Association, GA 201 - Gypsum Board for Walls and Ceilings. F. Gypsum Association GA 216 - Recommended Specifications for the Application and Finishing of Gypsum Board. H. UBC - Uniform Building Code. 1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Manufacturer: Gypsum wallboard, including accessories and fasteners, shall be the products of the same manufacturer. B. Requirements of Regulatory Agencies: 1. Comply with fire-resistance ratings indicated. 2. Provide materials, accessories, and application procedures which have been listed by UL or tested according to ASTM E119 for the type of construction indicated. CAREY & CO., INC. 3. Work shall comply with the applicable requirements of ASTM C840. C. Allowable Tolerances: 1. Gypsum wallboard surfaces shall have no measurable variation in any 2- foot direction and a maximum variation of 1/8 inch in 10 feet when a straightedge is laid on the surface in any direction. 2. Shim Work as required to comply with specified tolerances. 3. Do not exceed 1/16-inch offset between planes of abutting sheets at edges or ends. 1.4 SUBMITTALS A. Submit under provisions of General Conditions. B. Product Data: Manufacturer's specifications and installation instructions for each type of gypsum wallboard and accessory required. C. Certification: Manufacturer's certification that materials comply with requirements specified herein. 1.5 PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Delivery: 1. Deliver materials to the Project site with manufacturer's labels intact and legible. 2. Deliver fire-rated materials bearing the testing agency's label and classification identification. B. Storage: 1. Store materials indoors in a dry area, under cover, and stacked flat, off the floor. 2. Stack wallboard so that long lengths are not over short lengths. C. 1.6 JOB CONDITIONS A. Environmental Conditions: 1. Temperature: During cold weather, in areas receiving wallboard installation, maintain temperature range between 55 and 70 degrees F. for 24 hours before, during, and after gypsum wallboard and joint-treatment application. 2. Ventilation: a. Provide ventilation during and following adhesive and jointtreatment application. b. Use temporary air circulators in enclosed areas lacking natural ventilation. c. Under slow drying conditions allow additional drying time between coats of adhesives and joint treatment. d. Protect installed materials from drafts during hot, dry weather. B. Protection: Protect adjacent surfaces against damage and stains resulting from gypsum wallboard Work. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MANUFACTURERS - GYPSUM WALLBOARD SYSTEM A. Acceptable manufacturers of gypsum board: 1. U.S. Gypsum. 2. Gold Bond. 3. Approved substitute. 2.2. GYPSUM BOARD -3 A. Provide gypsum board materials in accordance with recommendations of GA 216.
B. Standard Gypsum Board: ASTM C36; 5/8 inch thick; maximum permissible length; ends square cut, tapered edges. C. Moisture Resistant Gypsum Board: ASTM C630; standard and UL rated; 5/8 inch thick; maximum permissible length; ends square cut, tapered edges. D. Fire Rated Gypsum Board: ASTM C36; UL rated; 5/8 inch thick; maximum permissible length; ends square cut, tapered edges. E. Gypsum Backing Board: ASTM C442; standard and UL rated, 5/8 inch thick; square edges, ends square cut, maximum permissible length. 2.3 GYPSUM BOARD ACCESSORIES A. Provide gypsum board accossories in accordance with GA 216. B. Metal Trim: Galvanized steel. 1. Corner Beads: 1-1/4 inch flanges. 2. Metal Trim: L bead and LC bead. C. Fasteners: Minimum 1-1/4" drywall screws. Nails permitted only at inside corners inacessible with screw gun. D. Reinforcing Tape, Joint Compoind, Adhesive, and Water: GA 201 and GA 216. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Verify that site conditions are ready to receive work and opening dimensions are as instructed by manufacturer. B. Beginning of installation means acceptance of substrate. 3.2 PROTECTION A. Protect completed work and historic finishes from damage. -4
3.3 GYPSUM BOARD INSTALLATION A. Install gypsum board in accordance with the recommendations of GA 201 and GA 216. Install fire rated partitions in accordance with GA 600 and CBC Tables 43-B and 43-C, and ratings indicated on the Drawings. B. Install single layer standard gypsum board perpendicular to framing. C. Use screws when fastening gypsum board to metal and to wood furring and framing. D. Install moisture resistant gypsum board on toilet room walls and where indicated on the Drawings. Treat cut edges and holes in moisture resistant gypsum board with sealant. E. Place corner beads at external corners. Use longest practical lengths. Place edge trim where gypsum board abutts dissimilar materials and as detailed. 3.4 INSTALLATION - GYPSUM BOARD A. Install gypsum board in accordance with GA 216. B. Use drywall screws to fasten gypsum board to framing substrate. C. Tape, fill, and sand filled joints, edges, corners, openings, and fixings to produce a surface ready to receive veneer finish. D. Feather coats onto adjoining surfaces so that joint camber is maximum 1/32 inch. 3.5 JOINT TREATMENT A. Tape, fill and sand exposed joints, fastener heads, edges and corners to produce smooth finish ready to receive paint finish. B. Feather coats onto adjoining surfaces so that camber is maximum 1/32 inch. 3.6 TOLERANCES A. Maximum Variation from True Flatness: 1/8 inch in 10 feet in any direction. -5
