1. Water and Sanitation Sector at a Glance: Challenges in Africa Infrastructure Deficit: Underdevelopment of water resources WSS access: 72% & 39% - MDGs not met Low storage capacity and limited resilience to water related disaster risks (droughts, floods, etc.) Low hydropower developed : <5% of potential Arable land irrigated: 7% WSS funding gap of USD 6-14bn/year: about half of what is needed Weak Sector Management and Governance Weak institutions, systems, O&M/sustainability, human capacity 80 transboundary water basins; weak regional cooperation Insecurity and conflicts Low sector priority and visibility

2. Context Water security is key for inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development Water Specific SDG: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for ALL. Water also affects nearly all other SDGs e.g. related to poverty, food/nutrition, education, health, gender, cities, industrialization, ecosystems and cooperation Africa Agenda 2063 recognizes water security as a key driver for economic development on the continent At the AfDB Water underpins all the High 5s and the Bank remains committed to supporting Africa s efforts to attain water security 1 contd.

Areas of Intervention Role 3. AfDB s Engagement in Water Sector Water Development & Sanitation Dept. (AHWS) AHWS leads Bank s work on promotion of sustainable and integrated solutions across the water and sanitation value chain to support Africa s economic transformation Coordinates Bank s water development and sanitation-related activities to enhance synergies and support achievement of the High 5 on Improving the Quality of Life of the People of Africa; and contributes to the other High 5s towards sustainable development of Africa s water resources 1: WATER COORDINATION AND PARTNERSHIPS 2: WATER SECURITY & SANITATION BEST PRACTICE AND INNOVATIONS 3. The Three Water Trust Funds/Initiatives (hosted by the AfDB) RWSSI RWSSI promotes greater investments for water supply and sanitation in rural Africa for improved health and welfare Opportunity to cover water for production in rural Africa MDWPP AWF AWF supports resource mobilization for water infrastructure devt. as above. Portfolio covers water supply, sanitation, water for agriculture; hydropower; water resources mgmt. 4. Selected Projects and Activities 4a. Uganda LVWATSAN II The AfDB provided USD 15.69 million grant to provide water supply to the towns of Mayuge, the cluster of Buwama-Kayabwe, Bukakata and Ntungamo. The program provided the targeted towns with water supply systems, regional feacal sludge plants, solid water systems and sanitation facilities. The program included capacity building and operation and maintenance equipment to the Water Service providers The program has benefitted a total of 60,000 people in the above 5 towns. The project is part of The Lake Victoria Water Supply and Sanitation Program (LVWATSAN II) in the five East African Community partner states of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. The program s objective is to address pollution of the lake through boosting sustainable water supply and sanitation infrastructure to 15 secondary towns within the Lake Victoria Basin.

4. Selected Projects and Activities 4b. Ethiopia - Harar Water Supply and Sanitation Project - Improving Livelihoods and Enhancing Water Security The AfDB provided USD 33 million to provide water supply to 4 towns in distress Water production; 75 km transmission line and 115 km distribution network 4 booster pump stations to lift water over 1000 m in elevation Several storage reservoirs Sanitation and hygiene promotion Sustainability measures including capacity building 250,000 beneficiaries Water revenue collection > 90%, enhancing sustainability; Water-borne disease reduced by 75%; Time spent by women reduced by 50 Commercial enterprises such as hotels flourished again, providing jobs.

4. Selected Projects and Activities 4c. Kenya Water Services Boards Support Project The AfDB provided USD 45 million to improve water supply and sanitation services in 4 towns and rural communities. 5new intakes, 100 km transmission lines, storage reservoirs, boreholes and 80 km distribution network 85 rural water and sanitation systems including purchase of exhausters Sanitation and hygiene promotion Institutional development support for sustainability 450,000 beneficiaries Improved water revenue collection The improved sanitation and water coverage in project area has greatly improved the social and economic wellbeing of the communities. Girls have more time for school attendance, water borne diseases are on the decrease, and Women have time on their hand to attend to other economic activities

4. Selected Projects and Activities. 4d. Uganda WSSP I The AfDB provided USD 61.46 million loan to provide water supply and sanitation to 20 towns of the central region and rural water and sanitation supply country wide. The program provided (i) sector budget support for rural water supply and sanitation to 111 districts and (ii) constructed 3 Large Gravity Flow Schemes (LGFS) in the mountains and 20 Solar Powered Water Systems. The program included construction of18 new town water works and 7 towns water works rehabilitated. The program objective was to contribute to the improved health and productivity and reduction of epidemic diseases through use of safe water and sanitation services. It promoted the transition to green growth through use of solar power and gravity flow schemes. It has benefited 2.89 million rural users and 241,400 urban users with clean safe water. The program is part of sector joint program and has adopted use of country systems.

6.1 Other Business Opportunities A number of opportunities do exist. These include but not limited to the following: Co-financing/co-development of projects Partnering with Water Utilities in Africa to provide and promote some of the innovative technologies, strengthen their capacities and to improve their operation efficiencies Opportunities in Sanitation related project preparation and implementation As the private sector space broadens there will be further opportunities of working with small and medium size enterprises in Feacal Sludge Management for improved service delivery particularly in the Peri- Urban areas in Africa.
