Agenda Definition of BIM BIM Assisting in LCI Goals Removing Redundancy Reducing Waste Solidifying Cost Information Rich Model Available to Owner 6
Definitions BIM Building Information Modeling (BIM) is the process of generating and managing building data during its life cycle. Typically it uses threedimensional, real-time, dynamic building modeling software to increase productivity in building design and construction. BIM encompasses building geometry, spatial relationships, geographic information, and quantities and properties of building components. 7
Definitions BIM Is the digital worlds example of the initiation, conceptualization, realization and managing of a building. 8
BIM Assisting in LCI Goals LCIGoals Maximizes value delivered to the customer while minimizing waste. EPA 2003 estimated C&D waste of170 million tons that s 3.2 pounds per capita per day(pcd) Previously calculated in 1996 as 2.8 pcd 9
BIM Assisting in LCI Goals LCIGoals Maximizes value delivered to the customer while minimizing waste. Manufacturing process/system. 10
BIM Assisting in LCI Goals BIM Design and Construction process/system. 11
BIM Assisting in LCI Goals BIM Is the digital worlds example of the initiation, conceptualization, realization and managing of a building. BIM Is a tool which allowsfor the digital prototyping of a project. It s intent is to be a repository of all pertinent project information of which access is readily available. Geometric Information Readilyaccessible depending upon phase Non-Geometric Information Some areas accessible, most not Analysis informationnot always transferable 12
Removing Redundancy NIST 2004 Report estimates 15.4 Billion Dollarsin annual interoperability cost. BIM can do only so much.. Contract development will assist in motivation. IPD, Design Build, Design Assist. Evidence based design will also have a hand in it 13
IPD/Design Build Removing Redundancy Design Assist Approach Revit MEP CAD Duct CAM Duct Convert Validated Geometric Information into AutoCAD and then Tag it with Software Specific Information for Fabrication 14
Removing Redundancy IPD/Design Assist Approach Design Build Revit Structural DATA SDS/2 FABRICATION In early phases of Design (end of SD), Structural Model is shared Communication Continues with Fabricator Fabricator Model shared with Design and Construction Team 15
Moving more field work to fabrication work. More and more examples of this happening in Mechanical and Electrical Trades. Trades that seem very efficient are benefitting from BIM. Architectural Precast Concrete Reducing Waste Study from Georgia Institute of Technology March 26 th 2008 For a 20 story panelized building found that BIM was as much as 58%more efficient in workflow compared to 2D (traditional) methods. 16
