Project Summary BACKGROUND: The applicant, Kraft Heinz Company, represented by Allison Miller, proposes a noodle sculpture at the employee entrance of the Kraft Research and Development facility at 801 Waukegan Road. Kraft is proposing a fiberglass noodle sculpture 20.0-feet long and 9.7-feet tall in macaroni yellow mounted to a oval base. The sculpture will be incorporated into landscaping around the base to include Viburnum, Junipers, Grasses and perennials. To make way for the sculpture four (4) trees will need to be removed. The applicant is proposing to install six (6) new trees around the property to include one (1) 3.5-inch caliper Skyline Honey Locust, two (2) 3.0-inch caliper Freeman Maples, three (3) 3.0-inch caliper Swamp White Oaks, one (1) 3.0-inch Accolade Elm, and one (1) 3.0-inch Sugar Maple. The applicant is proposing to illuminate the sculpture with exterior ground mounted LED flood lights. The proposed sculpture is a sign based on the Village of Glenview definition of a sign. In that case the proposed sculpture will need a zoning variance based on size of the sculpture and since there will be two signs along the Waukegan Road frontage where only one is permitted by Code. As part of the Appearance Commission review the Commission should forward detailed comments on to the Zoning Board of Appeals for review at the August 17 th meeting. If the case receives a positive recommendation it will appear at the Village Board of Trustees meeting on September 1 and September 15 prior to being able to install the sculpture. Appearance Commission Review APPEARANCE PLAN COMMENTS: Staff comments after evaluating the proposal for compliance with the Appearance Plan: Sign Criteria from Appearance Plan: Compatibility with building architecture Compatibility with signs on adjoining buildings Harmony with surrounding landscape Good scale in relationship to surroundings Use of harmonious colors Staff comments: o The Appearance Commission should decide if the proposed sculpture is appropriate for the area and forward comments on the size of the sculpture to the Zoning Board of Appeals. o The sculpture includes additional negative space left by the shape of the noodle sculpture that is included in the area calculation for size of the sculpture. o The petitioner shall furnish material and color samples of all proposed signage for review by the Appearance Commission. Landscaping Criteria from Appearance Plan: Grades of walks, terraces and other paved areas shall provide an inviting and stable appearance for walking, and if seating is providing, for sitting. Landscape treatment shall be provide to enhance architectural features, strengthen vistas and provide shade. Plant material shall be selected for interest in its structure, texture, and color and for its ultimate growth. Plants should be indigenous, hardy, harmonious and of good appearance. Where plants are susceptible to injury they should be protected. Staff comments: o The applicant shall apply for tree removal permits for the four (4) trees proposed for removal as part of this application. POTENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD IMPACTS: The sculpture is proposed to be located at the northern end of the Kraft Research and Development site, as such, no anticipated negative impacts are expected. 4
