PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Baseline year for energy: December 2010 to November 2011 Implementation year for energy: December 2011 to November 2012 Baseline year for water: April 2012 to July 2012 Implementation year for water: August 2012 to July 2013 Liberty Investment Company, the holding company of the Liberty Group, initiated and implemented green steps at its Liberty Automobiles showroom building in Sharjah. The building was inaugurated in 2004 as the world s largest General Motors showroom, with total floor space of 105,440 SFT. It is a steel structure with full glass front façade and high-end interior finishes, creating a customer friendly environment with a total number of 151 employees. According to the Group s Engineering Consultant, Liberty Automobiles launched the Liberty Go Green campaign in December 2011, with zero budget. The ROI was achieved in just 8.3 months. This has resulted in a reduction of 387.77 tonnes of CO2 per year. Major savings were achieved through a combination of steps such as: comprehensive staff engagement program, weekly newsletter, automatic timers, energy savers, LED lights, harvesting of natural light, water reducers and use of AC drain water. Subsequently, an in-house Facility Management centre was established. EWS-WWF Corporate heroes case study on LIBERTY 4

Energy savers were installed with every Sub Main Distribution Board. Automatic programmable timers were fixed with all air- conditioners to control the ON/OFF function (during office hours and holidays), 400W external lights were replaced with 20W LED lights at the front of the Showroom and fluorescent lights in car park/drive ways also increase the day light to avoid the use of electricity, resulting in energy savings of 27.2%. Also separate water meter was fixed for the said building; change of ablution taps reduced water consumption from 16 to 3 liters. Additionally, water savers with taps, hand sprays and showers and optional dual flush devices were fixed. Further to this, the installation of A/C condensed water collection and supply system helped to achieve water savings of 29.2%. LESSONS LEARNT: Study well before fixing the base line. Changing the set comfort level is not easy. Basic problem costs may have to be incurred. Be ready to listen to suggestions and comments. Keep all equipments in top condition. Be careful with contracts and supplies. Motivation is must, to achieve success. NEGATIVE IMPACT ON SAVINGS: Addition of new A/C units and task lights. A/c unit efficiency is getting less. Switching on/off the showroom lights not on time. A/C duct leakages (roof top). Occupancy (Partial) on FRI & SAT also there. Heat from glass facade. Change in showroom timings. Keeping doors/roll up shutters open. Show room events. INSPECTION/MONITORING EVENTS & PROMOTIONS CHANGE IN TIME EWS-WWF Corporate heroes case study on LIBERTY 6
