Design options water tanks and OSD system combined The Landscape Tanks may be used as water tanks and OSD system combined, while at the same time also acting as a structural retaining wall, front fence or around your pergola or swimming pool. This design option should deliver a massive saving as a traditional OSD system may not even be required. Tanks may also be buried to a height that suits or partially buried at one end. The OSD system may receive water either from the roof or from run off water from hard surfaces. Ideal for sloping ground may be staggered as required. Inflow and overflow in same tank The OSD system may receive water either from the roof or from run off water from hard surfaces. The water tank element of the structure is to receive water from the roof only. Tanks in the retaining wall are not joined together where the two systems meet. Both systems form an integral part of the structural retaining wall. Retaining wall/water tank/osd system combined. Water tanks Retained soil OSD System 6
Design options cont: The below configuration is somewhat similar to the centre HED tank configuration (above) in that hard surface run off water can be directed straight into the end of the line of tanks and into the HED tank with trash/silt pit. This can be particularly handy in some installations where remote pits and other plumbing are cumbersome and hard to manage. The Landscape Tanks are not designed to be driven on or carry heavy loads. It is recommended to have the planter box above ground if possible as that delivers a lovely end result. The raised garden bed is suitable for growing all types of plants. End HED tank receiving direct run off from driveway. Structural retaining wall and OSD system. Seals: (EPDM rubber) The Landscape Tanks use their own patented highly effective O ring seal to join the tanks together. This results in virtually no plumbing works required to join together. The seals are cast in during manufacture and enable the pipes to be inserted from either direction. They are flexible and provide a water tight seal. These proven seals are used wherever an orifice is required anywhere in our tanks. Seals can be expected to last a lifetime as they are not used in hostile environment. 7
The Landscape Tanks OSD system in more detail. With some planning and smart design you may not need a traditional OSD system at all. (Massive savings can be expected). During your build or renovation you can easily incorporate your OSD system into your design for use as structural retaining walls, front fences, raised garden bed or even around your pool for great results. This means you may not even need a traditional OSD system at all because you have the system as your retaining wall. This can result in quite substantial savings. The Landscape Tanks OSD system is fundamentally the same unit as the standard Landscape Tank, (please see standard Landscape Tanks brochure and web site for details) but with some clever design modifications they also make great OSD systems. a The purpose of an OSD system is to simply store stormwater on site during a heavy rain event and then release that water to the stormwater LPD (Legal point of discharge) at a suitable flow rate (slowly) to avoid flooding council and Water Board infrastructure. An OSD system will be designed by your hydraulics engineer (you will need to employ a hydraulics or civil engineer for this project) with a HED (High early discharge) unit incorporated into the system. This document is designed to assist you and your engineer understand the working of the Landscape Tanks and the OSD system, and just how easy they are to use. Councils and Water Boards Australia wide have variances depending upon local conditions, age of infrastructure and local environmental considerations. This will effect how many tanks you may need in the system. These Landscape Tanks are suitable for both domestic and commercial applications. 8
The HED tank. The purpose of the HED unit is to allow the engineer to accurately calculate the slow release orifice size (installed on the inside of the tanks during manufacture) and subsequent flow rate required for your system. The stormwater is directed to the HED unit first, which is an independent unit from the other tanks and fills first. The stormwater is directed into this reservoir via the trash/silt pit via stormwater hard surface run off, from the roof via downpipes or both. The HED unit (the first chamber) will form part of the overall storage reservoir and is integral to the overall system. The inbuilt convenient trash/silt pit is a unique feature of the Landscape Tank system which will make designing your system considerably easier. The Trash/silt pit has a RH3030 removable galvanised mesh filter to filter out course debris and other items which may find their way into your system over time. The water passes through the trash/ silt pit before entering the first tank reservoir in the system. The first tank or reservoir acts differently to the other storage reservoirs as explained on the next page. In the Landscape Tanks system, there are two options for the HED tanks as shown below. Slow release Slow release This unit has the option of a 100mm inlet pipe direct from the grate system on the property. This unit has the option of a rectangular opening (75mm x 600mm to receive run off water direct from the surface as required.. The HED tanks have an orifice plate fitted on the inside of the tank during manufacture. This plate is to suit your engineers design specifications. The Orifice plate specification will be advised to Landscape Tanks for inclusion in the system. The orifice plate is to be made of stainless steel 3mm thick. See page 10. 9
Overflow from HED into reservoir. (other tanks in the line). 90mm check valve to ensure water from HED is always full. When full water overflows through 100mm pipe at the top of into the other reservoir tanks. When HED Step irons medium and large units only. One way check Valve tanks water level drops (because it has been discharging through the slow release orifice), water from reservoir (other tanks in the line) flows back into the HED tanks and subsequently to storm water. Removable RH 3030 removable galvanised mesh. The HED unit fills completely first and then overflows into the following tanks via a 100mm pipe at the top of the tank once full. The storage reservoir capacity (number of tanks) is also calculated by your hydraulics engineer. There is a 90mm connecting pipe (O ring seal) connected between the HED tank and the following tanks. This 90mm connecting pipe has a check valve fitted to prevent the inflowing water in the HED tank from entering into the following tanks from the bottom orifice. The HED tank must be full for it to overflow into the following tanks. Water flow filling Water flow emptying The HED tank also has a slow release orifice plate fitted internally to your requirements. Once the storm has passed the HED tank will release water through the control orifice and water levels will begin to fall. As the water levels falls, water from the following tanks will flow back into the HED and out to stormwater. In another great innovation the orifice plate as specified by your hydraulics engineer is fitted by Landscape Tanks to O ring seal internal face. This design means that a plumber can use standard PVC pipe sizes and simply push into the rubber O ring seal for convenience provided of course this PVC piping is larger than the orifice plate opening. Internal face of the tanks showing orifice plate. External tank face of the tank with PVC pipe 10
Centre HED tanks and Trash/silt pit. HED tank/trash silt pit includes: Galvanised 3mm mild steel access top, 3mm stainless steel orifice plate fitted internally. Orifice plate secured with SS Dyna bolts Removable galvanised RH3030 mesh, Orifice hole fitted where required, internal non return valve for equalising port. Internal concrete baffles. Step irons as required. The third option for the HED tanks and trash/ silt pit tank is that the tank may be placed in the middle of a row of tanks for convenience. This means you may be able to direct the driveway stormwater flow into the centre of the row of tanks on the lower side of the driveway. With some careful planning of heights and slopes this feature can save a great deal of money.
