WINTER CEREALS & OILSEED RAPE BROCHURE 2015 Supporting Farm Income with Better Varieties

WINTER CEREALS & OILSEED RAPE BROCHURE 2015 Planting of winter cereals and oilseed rape is approaching fast and the urge to plan early seems to be quite popular with growers due to the possibility of poorer sowing conditions in late autumn. Planting autumn crops and winter oilseed rape early comes with the benefit of spreading the work load, however the sowing date heavily influences disease, pest and weed management. Matching variety choice and the sowing date with the appropriate agronomy are the essential building blocks to harvest 2016. Our winter cereals are performing exceptionally well across the department of agriculture trials. Our hybrid barley varieties Volume and Quadra are yielding at an average of 15% higher than conventional varieties when grown to recommended protocol on farm. Husky winter oat is still the farmers firm favourite out performing Barra in both yield and grain quality. Vodka is our only true winter oat variety is showing excellent potential. Garrus, our new winter wheat variety is making an impact in the market with yields of 109% recorded in department of agriculture trials recommended list trials 2014. Farmers are choosing winter oilseed rape as it s an excellent break crop, extends the harvest window, and improves soil structure for subsequent crops along with helping to control difficult grass weeds such as sterile brome. Exciting new varieties for 2015 coming through Seedtech s portfolio include Incentive and Anastasia. In this brochure we have outlined these varieties and more which are commercially available for autumn sowing in 2015. Source: Winter Barley Recommended List Trial 2012-2014 TILLAGE FARMER JAMES O REILLY FROM BALLYRAGGETT, CO. KILKENNY DISCUSSES HIS SUCCESS WITH HIS HYBRID BARLEY CROP THIS HARVEST 2015 James planted on 13th and 14th September 2014 at 95kg per ha using a mini till crop establishment system. All land is in continuous tillage in excess of 25 years. James explains this was our second year sowing hybrid barley after spring oil seed rape. The land where our hybrid barley was this year would not be typical winter barley land with over 60% of the land being cold slow draining stiff soil, which is more suitable for winter wheat and oats than barley but the hybrid varieties seems to have great ability to thrive and survive in this typically winter wheat type land. We had no issues with crows as the crop neared ripening which was a relief and if planted with a conventional variety, the crop would have been under attack from crows due to the lack of alternative barley (feed) in the area available or suitable for crows in late June/July. James applied a small amount of nitrogen mid-february which he feels helped the hybrid crop as it never struggled or looked under pressure all spring. James says his hybrid yields exceeded all expectations we had yields as high at 5.5 tonne per acre with an average of 4.5 tonne per acre, an average moisture of 18.3% and bushel weight in the early 60s. Straw yields were 12 to 14 (4x4) bales of straw per acre. James O Reilly, Tillage Farmer, Co. Kilkenny Cereals & Winter Oilseed Rape 2015 3

WINTER BARLEY YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED: Hybrid Barley is now under the HYVIDO Brand Name What actually is Hybrid Barley? A Hybrid Barley is a mixture of two distinct parental lines, produced through cross-fertilization by a male fertile line, mixed with female lines to maximize pollen flow bringing the best characteristics into the seed for a farmer, an F1 Hybrid. Does Hybrid seed cost more? Yes, Hybrid seed costs more but for an investment of 50 more per/ha you can receive a yield return of 135 per hectare or 1 tonne more per hectare. How to maximise Hybrid yield potential? To maximise Hybrid yield potential is fairly simple. With our experience of HYVIDO hybrid barley agronomy, we ve developed a simple, flexible agronomy approach to help you achieve the best results. Our 3 easy steps include: 1. Reduced Seed Rate 2. Early Application of Nitrogen 3. Adapt PGR (Plant Growth Regulator) programme CHOOSE HYBRIDS & REAP THE REWARDS Cereals & Winter Oilseed Rape 2015 5

OILSEED RAPE WHAT S NEW FOR PLANTING OILSEED RAPE IN 2015? The hybrid v s conventional debate Conventional open-pollinated varieties are also known as pure lines or inbred lines. Self-pollinating plants will contain the same characteristics as the original parent. Inbred production relies on crossing parent lines and then purifying the lines to ensure each plant has the same characteristics. Hybrid varieties are bred using a traditional, non-gm, technique. Hybrid varieties are also known as restored hybrids. They are produced by crossing a male-sterile female plant with a pollenproducing male plant. This restores the pollen-producing ability in the resultant seed. Hybrid yields can sometimes be comparable to conventional varieties and are often sown at a lower seed rate than conventional varieties. However, Hybrid production enables a wide range of characteristics to be incorporated into a new variety, potentially increasing the adaptability of the variety to a range of growing conditions resulting in the potential to produce higher yields. The importance of early vigour for winter oilseed rape According to Brian O Connor of the Department of Agriculture, early vigour will become increasingly important in future winter oilseed rape crops. Mr. O Connor states that farmers must focus on crops that establish quickly to reduce the risk posed by the flea beetle. Farmers must place more emphasis on both early emergence and early vigour in oilseed rape due to the ban on neonicotinoids. Markets and trends The market price for oilseed rape is moving upwards for 2016. The subsidy for protein crops which excludes oilseed rape is expected to reduce next year due to being oversubscribed. This could result in bean production becoming less attractive as a break crop option and oilseed rape taking its place.
