The Project Reducing Fuel Poverty: Heat Storage Innovation

Project Partners Sunamp was founded to respond to the need for low carbon heating and hot water systems in domestic and commercial settings. Using Phase Change Materials, Sunamp have developed an efficient, energy dense heat storage system, packaged into modular batteries. Sunamp is the project lead. Castle Rock Edinvar is one of Scotland's leading housing associations and is a Scottish Charity and part of the Places for People Group. Owns/manages over 6000 homes and works with over 8000 customers across 8 local authority areas - working closely with 2 subsidiary companies to achieve our vision. Strong leadership and business approach in everything we do. As well as a strong business ethos we're an ethically minded green organisation - tackling environmental challenges through our energy strategy. East Lothian Housing Association (ELHA) was founded in 1988 with the aim of providing good quality affordable housing within East Lothian. We are a charity and do not operate to make a profit. While our early work was in building new homes for rent, we now own and manage a wide variety of housing, all in East Lothian. Solar PV partner Edison Energy. We are the market leaders in the design, development and installation of photovoltaic panels and with a specialist workforce, we focus on complete contract management, reporting and control systems that engages at all levels with our customers, and the community.

Why focus on fuel poverty? The Scottish Government have pledged to ensure that by November 2016, so far as is reasonably practicable, people are not living in fuel poverty in Scotland. Between 2012 and 2013 fuel poverty increased by 4 percentage points from 35.2% to 39.1%. This represents an increase of around 100,000 households from the previous year, reaching 940,000 in 2013. The main causes are a combination of poor energy efficiency of the dwelling, low disposable household income and the high price of domestic fuel. The Progress Update on the Fuel Poverty Statement states that for every 5% increase in energy prices then as many as 46,000 households in Scotland (2%) are pushed into fuel poverty, all else being equal. Of the three main policy areas affecting fuel poverty, two of them ie household income and energy regulation, are matters reserved to the UK Government, while energy efficiency is a matter devolved to the Scottish Government.

Pre-application Identify the opportunity Establish the partnership and ensure buy-in at the appropriate level Develop enough detail to demonstrate deliverability and credibility e.g. identified properties and technologies Be clear on the outcomes and how they can be achieved in the timeframe Ensure to align with the application brief!

Phase 1 Test the hypothesis and develop a delivery plan Establish a robust partnership with appropriate sign off from Boards Understand the risks and develop a mitigation plan Test the financial model and ensure that there is sufficient cash flow to deliver key stages Special focus needed on State Aid and match funding Seek opportunities for expanding the partnership without compromising the integrity of the delivery programme. Start to gear up project teams for delivery Very useful that Phase 1 is funded (Note: De-Minimis) (Some) Phase 1 projects will pitch to selection panel

The Innovation Social Landlords have a duty to address the Energy Efficiency of their stock and achieve statutory targets by 2020 (EESSH). Castle Rock Edinvar will invest more than 3,000,000 every year for the next five years to address this challenge. Typical solutions include: Condensing boilers; Double/secondary glazing; Heating controls; Storage heaters; Loft insulation top-up; Floor insulation; Compact fluorescent lighting; Solid wall insulation (external). This project enables us to go beyond these typical solutions and develop approaches that can transform outcomes for individuals and families. Through the integration of advanced renewable technology (Fuel Cell Micro CHP, PV, Heat Pumps) and the introduction of compact heat storage (Sunamp Heat Batteries) we will be able maximise the efficiency of local energy production and align this with actual needs.

Heat Battery: Storage Innovation Very energy dense (around 4 times hot water) Novel, inexpensive, safe Phase Change Materials (PCMs) PCMs use latent heat to store & release heat (melting & crystallizing) Developed with University of Edinburgh Same basis as re-useable handwarmers, packaged as a system unit Modular packaging for scalable capacity & easy install Lego -like Product range with multiple capacities & functions SunampPV: bridges between on-building PV and hot water needs SunampStack: large capacity heat storage High storage capacity in a small space deals with intermittency Integrate with existing heating and hot water circuits Ideal for retrofit upgrades to use local renewable heat

District and Household Heating Solution 4M Project funded by Scottish Government via Local Energy Scotland 5 other projects also funded (total across 6 projects > 20M) Highly competitive (114 applicants) Solar PV Mains Gas/ Off-peak Electricity Heat Pumps Micro CHP Generator Heat Batteries 91 675/year/household savings Innovative combinations of proven mchp, Heat Pump & PV with innovative advanced Heat Batteries to balance time of availability against time of demand. Objective: Significant reduction in tenant fuel poverty for our Housing Association partners via large-scale R&D project with scaled trial deployment.

The Solution Phase 1 learning: No one single solution fits all buildings. Using a pick one from each of column A, B, C approach to maximise benefits delivered. A B C mchp B mchp PV Heat Pump C SunampPV PV Off-Peak Tariff Off-Peak Tariff Resistance Heat SunampStack

Scale of the Project 650 Individual Homes, plus 115 Sheltered and Older People Homes More than 1000 tenants Rural, Semi-Rural and Urban Settings Savings from 19% - 50% on annual bills

Alignment Linking local energy demand with local renewable energy generation Applying innovative advanced energy storage Delivering renewable heat and electricity to local consumers Encouraging local finance solutions
