Global Formwork, Falsework and Shoring Solutions Providers History The system of formwork was born out of the acute shortage of building materials which followed the end of the second world war. At the time the company Robert M Douglas was the main contractor for the UK Construction Industry in 1947 of the Trostre Steelworks for the Steel Company of Wales near Llanelli. This scheme for the modernisation of the tinplate industry, called for some 200,000 cubic yards of reinforced concrete which necessitated the use of formwork for its construction. Timber was the traditional material for such purposes, but could only be obtained on permit from the Ministry of Supply. The quantity allocated by the ministry was inadequate to maintain the required progress of the work so alternative means of providing the necessary formwork were investigated. Limited quantities of cold steel plate were available and the timber obtained by permit was to a considerable extent used as framing to which the steel plate was fixed. The available quantities were soon absorbed and the supply was augmented by the purchase of old Anderson air raid shelters, which were rolled flat and pressed into panels of uniform size. This was the first steel panel formwork system of the times in the UK. The system was so successful that the decision was made in 1948 to produce the units in large quantities and to make it available to the UK Construction Industry as a whole. With this decision came the formation of Rapid Metal Developments Ltd, a subsidiary of Robert M Douglas Ltd. 01

The company s first export order was received from Australia in the early 1950s when large quantities of formwork were shipped out for use on the construction of the original Woomera rocket range. This led to the formation of an Australian subsidiary quickly followed by one in New Zealand. Export markets were opened up around the world during the 50s and 60s with a major drive into the Middle East in the 80s. During this period the UK branch network had been developed with a focus towards hire of equipment. In 1975 RMD received the Queens Award to Industry as an acknowledgement of the company s export success quickly followed by the Group Chairman - Robert M Douglas becoming Sir Robert. Further geographic expansion took RMD to New Zealand in 1967, the United Arab Emirates in 1978 and Spain in 1991. Following the acquisition of R M Douglas by Interserve in 1991, RMD accelerated overseas expansion. During the 1990s, a significant number of product lines were introduced to broaden and deepen its service offering. Following Interserve s acquisition of Kwikform UK operations were transferred to RMD Kwikform in 1999. In 2010, RMD Kwikform was awarded the prestigious Queen s Award for Enterprise: International Trade 2010, for increasing its overseas business by 185%, to 30 countries, over six years, generating a total revenue of 154m. Locally RMD Kwikform South Africa was established in 2007 and has expanded over the years to include branches in Centurion, Johannesburg, Durban, Bloemfontein, Cape Town and Nelspruit, with new branches expected to be opened in 2015. 02

FALSEWORK/SHORING RAPIDSHOR A cost effective modular galvanized steel shoring system. High leg capacity of up to 80kN saves material and labour costs, with reductions in the number of foundations and formwork primary beams. The modular system is easy and quick to erect, accommodating sloping ground and varying slab levels with regular patterns of snap on braces reducing both erection and inspection costs. Tilting head and base plates system eliminates the need for use of timber wedges to overcome sloping ground and elevated slabs. DECKING AIRODEK A lightweight soffit formwork system that is simple and fast to erect and dismantle. Designed for easy assembly, transportation, storage and maintenance. The product can be used in conjunction with all of our falsework products. The Airodek system comprises of three variants: Props and Panels: The panels are supported by the crowns and props. The whole system is struck once the concrete has gained sufficient strength. Panels, Deck Beams, Dropheads and Shoring: A quick strip system, where the panels and deck beams are removed during the early stages of curing, whilst the dropheads and shoring remain undisturbed to support the concrete. Skeletal System: The deck beams sit in the drophead and the Airodek Soffit Beam spans between the deck beams supporting the plywood. The deck beams and soffit beams can be struck and removed, leaving the plywood supported by the dropheads and shoring. APPLICATIONS: Soffit formwork - suitable for a range of concrete slabs up to 450mm thick SUPERSLIM SOLDIERS WITH GTX The Superslim Soldier is the definitive formwork primary beam, with its unrivalled strength-to-weight ratio, versatility and range of accessories. Robust and easily assembled into beams of almost any length, the Superslim Soldier can be re-used on site after site, in numerous temporary works applications. The GTX beam is a structural laminated veneer timber beam for use as a primary or secondary bearer in a wide range of formwork and shoring applications. Superslim soldiers are used as main bearers with GTX beams as secondary bearers where heavy duty soffit applications are required such as bridge decks, transfer beams, etc. Projects that don t demand a heavy duty soffit transfer system, GTX beams can be used as main bearers as well as secondary bearers, i.e. typical building slabs. WALLING & COLUMNS MINIMA Modular wall formwork panels for concrete pressures up to 60kN/m 2. The lightweight panels weigh only 30kg/m 2, allowing them to be easily and safely set by hand. With an extensive range of accessories, Minima has the versatility to adapt to most building shapes, quickly and easily. The clamps are easily tightened, prolonging their working life and reducing labour requirements. Panels can be clamped together using the Aligning Panel Clamp and up to 25m 2 lifted by crane if required. The system is available in a wide range of panel sizes allowing virtually any configuration to be erected. The minima inner corners have 2 degree stripping clearance allowing panels to be easily removed once curing has taken place. In addition to the standard 90 inner corner, Minima offers hinge corners that can articulate from 60 to a maximum of 150, giving the system the ability to form non-right angled corners. Maxima can be assembled into a wide range of panel combinations to suit specific layouts and pour heights, to provide effective formwork applications. Maxima eliminates on- site panel preassembly, and uses a single Multiclamp for almost all connections, it is quick and straightforward to erect formwork to any height and length, offering significant savings in time and skilled labour costs. With a weight of 60kg/m 2, Maxima is a crane-handled system that offers the best solution when high concrete pressures are developed during construction. Maxima crane hook attaches simply to panel edge members for safe and efficient crane handling. The global RMDK Don t Walk By campaign aims to empower everyone within RMD Kwikform to be aware of their own safety and take positive action if they see a situation that they consider to be unsafe. In 2013 RMD Kwikform won two Health and Safety awards, one RMD Group award and the other through the local Master Builder Association (MBA) for the outstanding standards maintained in the Bloemfontein branch operations. The Umgeni Interchange Development Project Constructed by: Rumdel Cape RMD has provided us with good technical support and backup on the Umgeni Road Project. Their products and solutions have provided us with a simple modular system that is versatile and robust. Project Manager: Gary Williams An exciting road infrastructure project in KZN is approaching completion after 2 years of construction. The Umgeni Interchange Development Project, is currently the largest construction project in KZN and is a Joint Venture between Rumdel Cape, EXR Holdings and Mazcon. Several key suppliers were involved in the project including RMD Kwikform South Africa. The South African National Roads Agency SOC Ltd (SANRAL) commissioned the development and improvement project in 2010 to aid the local residents with the increasing congestion problems experienced at the intersection as well as to greatly improve the safety for road users and pedestrians. The upgrades include the implementation of various directional ramps, two overpass viaducts, three overpass bridges, two dedicated pedestrian bridges, such that the upgraded interchange will function as a free flow system. RMD Kwikform s involvement in the project stretched from providing formwork for the first concrete bases up to the finished bridge ramps. RMD provided a wide variety of systems backed by well thought out designs and innovative solutions specific to the contractor s needs. In particular they supplied a combination of their Minima and Maxima wall panel systems for abutments and retaining walls. 15

For major abutments and specialised walling RMD used Superslim soldiers with GTX secondary beams and plywood. The cantilever wings for the pre-cast concrete beam bridges were constructed using RMD s innovative Paraslim modular system and the in-situ bridges were built with the support of their Rapidshor shoring system. RMD s Rapidshor modular steel shoring system, with the high leg load capacity of 80kN, made easy work supporting the in-situ bridge ramp segments. This system has been designed to reduce costs and increase erecting time. Using considerably less components and a bracing system with snap-on functionality, time and labour required is reduced. RMD Kwikform offered a unique Superslim & GTX soffit formwork system. Its versatility allows these products to be customised to suit any formwork requirement due to their tilt heads and bases which can accommodate sloping surfaces and varying slab levels, eliminating the need for timber wedges. Using their unique GIRO connection, the Cantilever wings were designed to allow simplified adjustment to the side forms thus rendering a superior design for curved bridge decks. To overcome the challenge of bridge ramps spanning over existing freeways open to traffic, RMD provided their unique Paraslim modular cantilever formwork system for the cantilever wings on the precast beam bridges. The system is based on a triangular frame consisting of a Superslim top cord with a turnbuckle undercarriage. Each frame in the module is supported by a single diagonal tie and the formwork module is designed to be erected and dismantled by crane. The project has experienced delays and is set to be completed towards the middle of 2014. North East Waste Water Treatment Works Constructed by: Stefanutti Stocks Civils KZN Working with RMD Kwikform on the project has been great, from getting easy and workable designs and technical on-site support, right through to delivery time. RMD Kwikform has been a wonderful asset on site. Site Engineer: Levi Swartz The existing Bloemspruit Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) currently services the greater Bloemfontein area and is currently hydraulically overloaded. A new project is underway to relieve the load on the existing infrastructure through the construction of an additional WWTW known as North Eastern WWTW. The additional facility will also allow the municipality to undertake necessary maintenance work on the existing Bloemspruit works. Stefanutti Stocks Civils KZN was awarded the civil construction elements of the project by the Mangaung Metro Municipality in the Free State. The North East Waste Water Treatment is the largest of its kind in the Mangaung District and the sheer size of the project makes it a great project to be involved with in the Free State. The project is the first phase of a much bigger scope of works that is set to be constructed in the near future. RMD Kwikform was approached by Stefanutti Stocks who had specific technical and timescale requirements for the project. The engineers and technical team at RMD Kwikform worked closely with the site team to provide Stefanutti Stocks a range of specific equipment that would meet the demands of the job. 17

The project started February 2013 and construction is set to be finished in November 2014. RMD Kwikform in Bloemfontein has recently won the Northern Cape and Free State Master Builder Association (MBA) Health and Safety Competition in the Plant and Storage Yard Category. The scope of work includes the construction of: New inlet works including screw pump lifting station, mechanical screening, grit removal structures and flow measurement; Biological reactor comprising of anoxic and aerobic zones as well as internal recycling streams; Two 35-metre diameter secondary settling tanks (SSTs); A chlorination tank; A buffer pond; Treated sewage effluent outfall including a concrete channel and pipeline to the Bloemspruit River; An emergency overflow pond downstream of the inlet works; Three concrete lined sludge lagoons; A pumpstation that will pump raw activated sludge (RAS) to the biological reactor and waste activated sludge (WAS) to the sludge lagoons; A wash water pump station to relay treated effluent to various locations; and Buildings, including a two-storey MCC building, an emergency generator building, an administration building and a new chlorine-dosing building. RMD Kwikform provided Kwikstage for support and access, a GTX Flex System for soffit formwork and wall formwork that included a Minima Panel system and GTX Plywood and Superslim solutions. RMD also designed and delivered special formwork for the column heads to meet the specific requirements for that component of the project. The majority of the project had very technical and detailed aspects to it which required some problem solving from both parties. The close working relationship allowed the project team to be able to find solutions that were not only practical but were easily achievable on site. Many of the structures on site were 6m or more in height with battered walls sloping at 3 with very intricate detail in their design. As with all building sites, time is always a big factor, and Stefanutti required solutions that could not only save time but could be erected safely and with ease. The technical team and formwork designers worked together to formulate a GTX Plywood solution for the walling components of the project, which made it possible for the team on site to speed up production with faster pour rates and pour cycles using a product tailored to their specific needs. RMD Kwikform was able to utilize their wide range of equipment and experience in the market to assist with all technical aspects of the scope of works needed on site. 18
