USGBC & LEED A Summary of the LEED Development as a primer for LEED ND

US Green Building Council USGBC Basic USGBC information LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design GBCI (Green Building Certification Institute)

Basic USGBC Information What is the USGBC: A non-profit organization of more than 15,000 member organizations from every sector of the building industry. Its sole mission is to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life. The USGBC achieves this through a variety of self developed programs and services, and works closely with key industry and research organizations and federal, state and local government agencies. USGBC also offers a host of educational opportunities, including workshops and Webbased seminars to educate the public and industry professionals on different elements of the green building industry, from the basics to more technical information.

Basic USGBC Information Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit organization USGBC works toward its mission of market transformation through its LEED green building certification program With a community comprising 78 local affiliates, more than 20,000 member companies and organizations, and more than 100,000 LEED Accredited Professionals

US Green Building Council USGBC Basic USGBC information LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design GBCI (Green Building Certification Institute)

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) What is LEED: LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building or community was designed and built using strategies aimed at improving performance across all the metrics that matter most: energy savings, water efficiency, CO2 emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality, and stewardship of resources and sensitivity to their impacts.

LEED Rating Systems

LEED LEED Rating Systems Green Building Design & Construction (BD+C) LEED for New Construction (LEED NC) is designed to guide and distinguish high-performance commercial and institutional projects. LEED for Core & Shell (LEED CS) aids designers, builders, developers and new building owners in implementing sustainable design for new core and shell construction. LEED for Schools recognizes the unique nature of the design and construction of K-12 schools and addresses the specific needs of school spaces. LEED for Retail recognizes the unique nature of retail design and construction projects and addresses the specific needs of retail spaces.

LEED LEED Rating Systems (cont.) Green Building Design & Construction (cont.) LEED for Healthcare promotes sustainable planning, design and construction for high-performance healthcare facilities. Green Interior Design & Construction LEED for Commercial Interiors (LEED CI) is a benchmark for the tenant improvement market that gives the power to make sustainable choices to tenants and designers. LEED for Retail Interiors recognizes the unique nature of retail design and construction projects and addresses the specific needs of retail spaces.

LEED LEED Rating Systems (cont.) Green Building Operations & Maintenance LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance (LEED EB) provides a benchmark for building owners and operators to measure operations, improvements and maintenance. LEED for Existing Schools recognizes the unique nature of the design and construction of K-12 schools and addresses the specific needs of school spaces.

LEED Credit Categories The LEED building certification process consists of 6 categories that can earn a total of 100 credits combined + 10 credits for Innovation in Design & Regional Priority. LEED Certified - 40+ LEED Silver - 50+ LEED Gold - 60+ LEED Platinum - 80+ SS - Sustainable Sites (10 possible credits) Sustainable Sites chooses a building's site and manages that site during construction which are important considerations for a project s sustainability. WE - Water Efficiency (11 possible credits) Water Efficiency credit category encourages smarter use of water, inside and out.

LEED Credit Categories (cont.) EA - Energy & Atmosphere (37 possible credits) The Energy & Atmosphere category encourages a wide variety of energy strategies: commissioning; energy use monitoring; efficient design and construction; efficient appliances, systems and lighting; the use of renewable and clean sources of energy, generated on-site or offsite; and other innovative strategies. MR - Materials & Resources (14 possible credits) This credit category encourages the selection of sustainably grown, harvested, produced and transported products and materials. IEQ - Indoor Environmental Quality (15 possible credits) The Indoor Environmental Quality credit category promotes strategies that can improve indoor air as well as providing access to natural daylight and views and improving acoustics.

LEED Credit Categories (cont.) ID - Innovation in Design (6 possible credits) The Innovation in Design credit category provides bonus points for projects that use new and innovative technologies and strategies to improve a building s performance well beyond what is required by other LEED credits or in green building considerations that are not specifically addressed elsewhere in LEED. RP - Regional Priority (4 possible credits) USGBC s regional councils, chapters and affiliates have identified the environmental concerns that are locally most important for every region of the country, and six LEED credits that address those local priorities were selected for each region.

LEED Certification Registration LEED process begins with a project registration form and a flat fee paid up front at time of registration: USGBC Members: $450 Non-Members: $600 Certification When a team is ready for USGBC to review its application, the team submits appropriate certification fee that is based up on project square footage, documentation. Documentation Once registered, the team receives information, tools and communications that will help guide and complete documentation within the certification process. The project team can wait until the building project is complete to submit documentation for all the credits it is pursuing. Or the team can seek review of its design-related prerequisites and credits before completion, and apply for construction-related credits after the project is finished.

Credit Weighting LEED 2009 uses US EPA s TRACI environmental impact categories. TRACI is a computer software tool developed by the U.S. EPA to assist with impact assessment for Life Cycle Assessment, Industrial Ecology, Process Design, and Pollution Prevention. The TRACI categories were selected because they represent a comprehensive, currently available complement to LEED which is appropriate for the North American building market. TRACI is Tool for the Reduction and Assessment of Chemical and Other Environmental Impacts

US Green Building Council USGBC Basic USGBC information LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design GBCI (Green Building Certification Institute)

GBCI (Green Building Certification Institute) What is the GBCI: Established in 2007 as a separate entity to administer credentialing programs, including the LEED Professional Accreditation program. The GBCI also oversees the development and implementation of a credential maintenance program for LEED Accredited Professionals.

GBCI Three-level Accreditation System LEED Green Associate For professionals who want to demonstrate green building expertise in non-technical fields of practice. The LEED Green Associate credential, denotes basic knowledge of green design, construction, and operations. LEED Accredited Professional The LEED AP credential signifies an advanced depth of knowledge in green building practices and the ability to specialize in a particular LEED Rating System. LEED Fellow LEED Fellows would become part of an extraordinary class of leading professionals distinguished by their years of experience and contributions to the standards of practice and body of knowledge for achieving continuous improvement in the green building field. This credential is still under development.
