EXISTING EXPERIENCE- PAST ACHIEVEMENTS 2. PUBLICATIONS 3. CONDITION MONITORING, FAULT DIAGNOSIS AND PERFORMANCE 4. CONDITION MONITORING, FAULT DIAGNOSIS WITH FAST RESPONSE DATA. EXISTING EXPERIENCE- PAST ACHIEVEMENTS In the field of Gas Turbine Fault Diagnosis, Condition Monitoring and Performance A team performing research in the field of Gas Turbine Condition Monitoring and Fault diagnosis has been active in the Lab of Thermal Turbomachines of the National Technical University of Athens (LTT/NTUA), for the past fifteen years. Research has been performed in different areas, resulting in new findings and establishment of new methods. The work has advanced along two different directions, namely, development of: Techniques using aerothermodynamic data (e.g. pressure, temperature) Techniques using fast response measurement data (e.g. vibration, sound) The working experience of the group can be summarized as follows: - Techniques for engine condition assessment and fault diagnostics have been developed, based on (a) aerothermodynamic methods and (b) methods based on fast response measurements. The methods of the second category have demonstrated the possibility of detecting and identifying faults of very small size, which would have remained unnoticed by conventional techniques, but can nevertheless evolve to catastrophic failures. - The group possesses know-how for performing measurements for diagnostic purposes and a wide range of instrumentation is available at LTT/NTUA. Measurements have been performed on several industrial Gas Turbines, as well as in turbomachinery components tested in the Lab. - Experience exists in setting-up diagnostic systems. The group has developed diagnostic systems for gas turbines operating in the field: two systems for utility gas turbines (for info see http://www.ltt.mech.ntua.gr/fiat20diagn.html and http://www.ltt.mech.ntua.gr/gecdiagn.html ), one for a gas turbine in a Refinery (for info see http://www.ltt.mech.ntua.gr/sulz0diagn.html ), and one for a jet engine test cell. The group has participated in several EUROPEAN projects, in the field of Gas Turbine performance and diagnostics: BRITE Contract RI-B-59: Noise/Vibration Imaging Techniques for Gas Turbines Investigations (986-989). BRITE Contract BREU-506: Gas Turbine Health Monitoring Demonstrator, 99-994. A picture of the achievements of the research performed can be obtained from publications in this domain (see attached list), which reflect a large part of the scientific achievements of the group. The research work of the group has received international appreciation, as can be seen from a large number of citations to its publications. The following international distinctions have been awarded to works or members of the group: Best paper award in Controls and Diagnostics, 992 ASME Internatiοnal TURBΟ-EXPΟ. The annual Outstanding Service Award of the Controls and Diagnostics Committee of the ASME for 2002, was granted to a member of the group. Best paper award in Controls and Diagnostics, 2002 ASME Internatiοnal TURBΟ-EXPΟ. Best paper award in Education, 2003 ASME Internatiοnal TURBΟ-EXPΟ. PE Publishing Award for the best paper published in the ImechE Journal of Power and Energy, 2004. Current research activities are oriented towards the advancement of diagnostic techniques, with the aim of increasing reliability of automated procedures and reduction of the impact of uncertainty factors introduced by the industrial reality of gas turbine operation in the field. Sample areas of activity are: Development of probabilistic methods for gas turbine diagnostics Advanced diagnostics using Fusion methods Non-linear methods for on-board jet engine diagnostics Modelling of humidity and water injection effects in gas turbines Real time engine models and their exploitation for diagnostics Integration of developed methods into industrial diagnostic systems 2
