Caledonian University, Glasgow - Aluminium Rainscreen System

I n t r o d u c t i o n CGL Systems was formed over sixty years ago and remains a private company to the present day. Although the company s product lines have changed many times, CGL remains a supplier of metal construction products. The company evolved from manufacturing slating and tiling goods, to bituminous and asphalt heating units, then to patented membrane-lined gutter systems, and finally, since 994, to ventilated façade systems commonly known as rainscreen cladding. The company now occupies a purpose designed 50,000 sq.ft. factory, with a full suite of CNC metalworking machinery, on a 5 acre site in East Kilbride where all 5 employees are based. When Managing Director, Brian Williams, visited the foremost European cladding exhibition, Dach und Wand ( Roof and Wall ) in 994, he discovered a well-developed market for ventilated façades and realised that these products ideally suited CGL s core skills and that there was an opportunity to bring these concepts to the UK market. The philosophy of ventilated, open jointed cladding systems is one which British specifiers initially found difficult to comprehend. CGL therefore had to actively demonstrate to the specifier and contractor market, the benefits of such systems, by providing a range of architectural seminars, technical literature, and installation training. In 998, a significant step forward was taken when the Centre for Window and Cladding Technology developed the Standard for Walls with Ventilated Façades together with test standards and disciplines. Since then, there has been a steady growth in the use of the rainscreen principle utilising a variety of different materials to create the required aesthetic appearance. Today, although there are several suppliers of cladding materials who also promote rainscreen systems, CGL is unique in that the company is dedicated to the design and manufacture of these products. This concentration results in an unmatched range of rainscreen systems available in a large portfolio of metals and therefore justifiably, allows CGL to claim its position as The Metal Rainscreen Specialists

Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley - Aluminium Rainscreen System

D e l i v e r i n g S p e c i f i c a t i o n The façade of any modern building is the aesthetic skin of the construction and usually reflects the owner s desire to position his enterprise in the eyes of others. In addition, the façade must deal with all weather conditions and perform to the designed longevity. Thus the penalties of failing to provide an attractive, working cladding system can be substantial due to the costs of replacement, access, and disruption. CGL Systems offers its architectural and contractor clients a range of services designed to reassure them that the product offered will meet their specification, be simple to install, will perform to required life span, and will be attractive to view. These services are: Full structural, interface, and aesthetic design, backed by professional indemnity insurance Systems tested and approved to CWCT requirements Contractor installation training Technical review of build drawings and schedules prefabrication Site inspection visits Secure, best-quality supply chain System warranties covering repair, replacement, and consequential costs.

Green Park Office Development, Reading - Copper Rainscreen System

D e s i g n R e s p o n s i b i l i t y Rainscreen cladding is essentially an aesthetic screen which is supported from a structural, weather tight backing wall. It will therefore be lightweight, thin, water- permeable, and ventilated and can also be designed in a variety of cost options. CGL undertakes the responsibility for the following design issues and covers the risks inherent in such designs through product liability and professional indemnity insurance policies. STRUCTURAL DESIGN Careful design has to be carried out to ensure that the system and material chosen can cope with design wind loads during the building life. Several of the metals used in rainscreen façades act as a membrane under load, and are undamaged by repeated flexing under stress. Panels may however require stiffening struts and these have to be applied to the back of panels in a manner which does not show read through a common problem resulting from poor fabrication methods. Attachment of panels to the support grid has to be properly designed as it is not unknown for metal panels to tear and demount at attachment point due to overload. The correct placement of support brackets and carrier rails is another essential design element, both to ensure the structural integrity of the system but also to reduce fixing times as much as possible. INTERFACE DESIGN Rainscreen systems form part of the building façade which will typically include windows, curtain walling, ventilation systems, and other walling materials such as brickwork and render. Because rainscreens are designed to allow minimal rainwater through baffled or open joints and manage this ingress, it is essential to ensure that interfaces and penetrations in the screen are detailed properly. CORROSION PROTECTION Corrosion can take place due to the wrong choice of metal for the support grid (such as galvanised steel), use of dissimilar metals in contact thus setting up electrolytic action in the presence of moisture, water run-off from differing metals, bad panel design causing pooling of water at cut edges, and inadequate maintenance instructions. CGL design protects against these dangers. THERMAL PERFORMANCE Although rainscreens are the aesthetic skin of a wall and as such have minimal thermal value, they are connected to a structural backing wall by support brackets which are often required to be fitted through insulation boards which are externally applied to the structural wall. These penetrating brackets each act as a cold bridge and affect the thermal performance of the entire wall. By use of in-house Trisco software which carries out finite elemental analysis, CGL calculates the effect of the rainscreen bracketry and can thus verify or adjust the U-value of the wall to meet specified values.

Western Harbour Residential Development, Edinburgh - Aluminium Rainscreen and Wallplank Systems

S u p p l y P a r t n e r s Loughborough University - Zinc Rainscreen System The construction process involved in providing aesthetic façades can be complex. It will inevitably involve designers, engineers, material suppliers, system fabricators, and installers. If that supply chain does not operate in a cooperative manner, then the quality of the finished façade will be compromised. CGL provides quality rainscreen systems by partnering with a select group of world leaders in the manufacture of different metals, and also by the selection and approval of expert cladding and glazing contractors.

R a i n s c r e e n S y s t e m s CGL s Rainscreen systems are the most sophisticated available in the market whilst still providing value-formoney solutions. The systems are in-house designed and are patented, providing significant benefits to both designers and contractors. The systems are true drained and ventilated rainscreens Available in coil-coated, anodised or powdercoated aluminium, patterned or polished stainless steel, pre-weathered zinc, pre-patinated copper, brass, bronze, and ACM (aluminium composite material) The CS support structures feature -axis adjustability, fast installation, non-corroding, high quality aluminium and stainless steel components thus giving easy installation and perfectly-aligned façades Ultimate panel flatness is achieved thanks to CGL s specialist panel design The systems are secret-fix Panels are individually demountable and replaceable The unique CGL Tricam locks the system components together and yet can be easily released to give finite system alignment The systems are fully tested to the requirements of The Centre for Window and Cladding

T r a y p a n e l S y s t e m s CGL s Traypanel systems were developed to provide an economic alternative to more sophisticated rainscreen systems, and, whilst not providing the full range of benefits, still offer an attractive and flexible façade option. The panels have a horizontal 0mm wide overlap-flange joint through which fixings are applied to the CS support structure. The systems have some of the features of true rainscreens but do not provide the essential and defining aspects of properly drained and ventilated façades. However, traypanel façades cannot be defined as sealed systems either and so good practice demands that an airtight, structural backing wall should be in place and that a cavity should be provided to drain moisture, this cavity being vented at System features are: Available in pre and post-coated aluminium, copper, and pre-weathered zinc The systems are fully tested to the requirements of the Centre for Window and Cladding Technology Simple and easily-installed CS support structure, manufactured from high quality aluminium and stainless steel Panel are quickly and simply installed but are not individually demountable. Fixings are visible in horizontal joints and fixing heads can be coloured to match panels.

W a l l p l a n k S y s t e m s CGL s Wallplank systems have gained great popularity in recent years. The systems provide a strip-effect cladding in either vertical or horizontal format in a variety of widths, joint sizes, lengths, and materials. As with CGL Traypanel systems, Wallplanks systems are hybrid rainscreens and therefore require to be installed onto a structural and airtight backing wall. A cavity should also be provided behind the façade and be vented at the head and base of the façade. The products are lightweight, simply supported, and are an economic alternative to full rainscreen systems, offering some of their benefits. System features are: Available in coil-coated aluminium, copper alloys, and preweathered zinc The narrow width panels allow the use of thin, cost effective metals (.0 and.mm thick) Panel widths range from 0-400mm, lengths up to 4400mm, and feature joints from 5 to 0mm Panels are designed with an interlock joint and are therefore secret-fixed The systems are fully tested to the requirements of the Centre for Window and Cladding Technology Panels are quickly and simply installed but are not individually demountable.

Standard Details These are the standard shapes and details of our system. For non-standard applications, profiles, or arrangements, please contact our technical department. CGL Capping System incorporates the following components:-..6 -.0mm thick aluminium capping.. B 84 aluminium extrusion which doubles as a support strap and also as a jointing strap.. Neoprene anti-rattle extrusion fitted to aluminium support/ joint extrusion. 4. PVC serrated levelling pieces.

C G L A l u m i n i u m C a p p i n g S y s t e m The CGL Capping System has the following benefits:- No fixings pierce the capping which is thus allowed to move freely to cope with expansion stresses. This avoids unsightly distortion of the capping and removes the danger of leaks due to failed capping fixings Joints are securely waterproofed by the profiled nature of the support extrusion. The system does not rely upon site-applied mastic seals but upon the proven engineering technology of the design The CGL system is capable of coping with design wind pressures by variation of metal thickness and bracket placement The system is easy and quick to install. All necessary components are supplied to support, seal, level, and silence the finished capping. The Contractor can install the capping from the roof without the necessity of provision of expensive scaffolding All materials are compatible, corrosion-free, lightweight, and simple to disassemble and repair if damaged Cappings are available in coil-coated, powdercoated or anodized aluminium.

B e s p o k e R a i n s c r e e n A p p l i c a t i o n s The rainscreen principle Braehead Retail Centre, Glasgow The Rainscreen principle is ideally suited to the innovative use of façade materials to suit specific projects and CGL has been pleased to cooperate with designers and building owners to create some stunning effects on signature buildings. Always bearing in mind the key issues of water management, structural and thermal design, and material performance, rainscreen technology is increasingly used to achieve classic façade appearance.
