About CNC Direct Limited was established by David Thumath in 2007 to supply quality well priced machine tools into the New Zealand market. With well established brands and, the experience and knowledge of David, it got off to a good start in a boyant market. However, we all know what happened in 2008. We soon realised that to survive in the new world we would need to diversify. David had a solid background in toolsteel and aluminium sales so High Grade Metals was born. A visit to old contacts secured a supply of toolsteel, two bandsaws purchased and the sales push began. The next step was to purchase a large aluminium plate saw and a smaller cold saw and a visit to Germany to Bikar Metalle, a large family owned aluminium supplier. In 2011 we moved to larger premises in Onehunga and with the great product range and the service that comes from being a smaller, more agile, business we have not looked back. All our material comes with certificates if required, traceability is very important to us and our systems allow us to track any material sold to its source. 2

Aluminium 6082 PROPERTIES AND APPLICATIONS Aluminium alloy 6082 is a medium strength alloy with excellent corrosion resistance. It has the highest strength of the 6000 series alloys. Alloy 6082 is known as a structural alloy. In plate form, Aluminium alloy 6082 is the alloy most commonly used for machining. As a relatively new alloy, the higher strength of Alluminium alloy 6082 has seen it replace 6061 in many applications. The addition of a large amount of manganese controls the grain structure which in turn results in a stronger alloy. The tighter chemical band ensures more consistent anodising between batches. In the T6 and T651 temper, Aluminium alloy 6082 machines well and produces tight coils of swarf when chip breakers are used.
