Impact of Corrosion on Operating Performance 2
Corrosion Our Target Corrosion is the deterioration of a material due to direct chemical attack or electrolysis. Salts hold moisture on the surface and promote corrosion in unprotected metals. Chloride solutions break down the protective film on metals and increases corrosion Sulphidation and sodium can cause blistering of turbine blades and airframe crevices. Corrosion rates increase with humidity 3
Airborne Contaminants Particulate pollutants Gaseous pollutants Sulfur dioxide Nitrogen oxide Acid rain Smog Wild-fires Volcanic activity Corrosion Agents Contaminants from the Water Chlorides Sulfates Metal salts 4
The Troublemakers: Contaminants + Time + Heat (Accelerant) = Corrosion 5
PROPER HYGIENE = BIG COST SAVINGS + IMPROVED PERFORMANCE 6
Water & Water Treatment Methods a Synopsis 7
Water Contains Dissolved Residues This is what happened to a water main in a Mid- Western city from contaminants in the water: 8
Not All Water Is The Same Tap or drinking water should not be used for engine cleaning purposes. It may contain large quantities of minerals (incl. chlorides, sulfates, sodium, calcium & magnesium) that can corrode or leave residues on the engine. Locally produced bottled water is not a guarantee of purity. On-site water purification offers the operator controlled water purity. 9

Typical Purification Methods Barriers Feed Water Barrier Filtered Water Typical barriers include: Carbon Filters, Reverse Osmosis Ceramic Filters Sediment Filters 11
Distillation Superiority DISTILLATION REVERSE OSMOSIS CARBON FILTER TIME 12
Water Quality is Most Important The following problems can occur as water quality degrades: Blocking of the combustion chamber, which obstructs the air accesses in the chamber and causes poor combustion, Presence of deposits on the turbine blades, which become coked during use and cause a change in flow, Corrosion of the turbines and compressors caused by too great a quantity of chloride, sulfate and alkaline ions in the liquid, Corrosion of the compressors and the bearings by stagnant water if the drying is poorly carried out. 13
Prevention and Reduction The single most proactive task to prevention of corrosion is to remove the salts and sulphides by daily rinsing Daily rinses for engines operated within five miles of salt water and in other corrosive environments are essential All engine manufacturers recommend frequent washes/cleanings with pure water and proper detergents 14

Controlled & Measurably Consistent Water Purity For the helicopter operator, on-site distillation provides the benefits of controlled and documentable water quality to extend the life of engine components and their protective coatings, improving engine reliability and performance. 17
Water Purification And Storage Pure & Secure LLC has distillers available to produce from 12 gallons per day up to 600 gallons per day of pure distilled water. The units are available in 120/240 VAC and 50/60 Hz. Besides electrical power all that is needed is a pressurized water source, usually tap water and a drain. Water quality meets or exceeds the requirements of turbine engine manufacturers including Turbomeca and General Electric. 18

XQ-1400 Turbine-Rinse System Davison Army Airfield, Fort Belvoir, VA In September 2013 Pure & Secure LLC installed an XQ- 1400 at Ft Belvoir as a demonstration unit. This unit produces up to 12 gallons of distilled water/day and stores 25 gallons. It has performed well. 20
XQ-1400 Turbine- Rinse System This model is in field operations in Saudi Arabia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone for PHI Inc, and, in Barrow, Alaska with Shell Oil Company. Additional units can be installed on a base as demand requires. NOTE: These systems can also provide drinking water and water for aviation batteries. 21
The USCG choice was a customized system which produces 60 gallons of distilled water/day with 75 gallons of storage. The distilled water is followed by a pharmaceutical-grade DI system with digital read-out. US Coast Guard LAX Distiller Pharmaceutical grade DI with digital purity readout Pre-treatment 22
