Forestry and the wood industry in the UK an introduction The UK has long enjoyed a productive relationship with its forests and woodlands. The role of EGGER in the wood industry Founded back in 1961, EGGER proudly remains a family-owned business. Today, that relationship extends to a diverse range of interested parties, including forest owners, forest management companies, saw mills and product manufacturers. It also encompasses somewhere in the region of three million hectares of forest or around 13% of our total land area. Currently the UK harvests in excess of 10 million tonnes of timber each year, a figure that is forecast to rise over the next 15 years, before falling back thereafter. The harvest includes timber taken from woodlands which are owned by both the state and private proprietors, and involves a broad spectrum of organisations which provide the necessary forest management, harvesting and marketing services. The rising demand for UK-grown wood is supported by a substantial industry which produces sawn timber, panel boards, paper and energy. UK-based wood users have, over the past 10 years, invested over 1 billion. It is an investment that will ensure a buoyant, efficient and sustainable timber-growing sector for years to come. Over the years the company has been successfully moulded into one of Europe s leading suppliers of wood-based solutions, boasting 17 plants across Europe and 23 sales offices all over the world. EGGER also employs more than 7,200 people, with an annual turnover in excess of 2.2 billion, and production capacity for wood-based materials of over 7.5 million m 3. A proportion of materials are supplied by EGGER Forestry, a wholly owned subsidiary of EGGER (UK) Holdings Ltd, which harvests over 500,000 m3 timber per year from operating sites throughout Scotland and northern England. EGGER Forestry also supplies to a broad spectrum of roundwood customers across the UK and Europe. The forest products are transformed at the EGGER plants into a comprehensive range of products for use by the furniture, interior design, wood construction and flooring industries. The company s stated objective of creating more from wood is based on constant monitoring, improving our performance and by preserving our independence. It is achieved by sustainable international growth, providing customers with innovative solutions and by offering the market first-class products and services. Above all, however, it is made possible by one natural and renewable material. Wood. James Jones and Sons Ltd. 02 03
