Nu-Wool 2 Hour Firewall Guide Please note that this firewall can only be installed by approved Nu-Wool installers For Information, please contact: Bill Hulstrunk (413) 668-6133 Rev 01/13
Wall Construction Double row of staggered 2x4 studs. Opposite rows spaced 1 in. apart. Bearing plates: Two layers on the top and one layer on bottom. Continuous 5/8 Type C drywall on both sides. Nu-Wool WALLSEAL installed at a density of 4.6 lbs/ft. 3 Cross-bracing at midheight or diagonally. Side View Top View
Cross-Bracing
Note: Unlike this picture, the 2 x 4 cross bracing should be staggered on each of the two sides of the firewall
Partition Walls and Other Issues In order for the type C drywall to be continuous, the type C drywall must be installed before framing any intersecting partition walls. Any partition wall framed directly against the firewall without type C drywall behind it will need approval by the appropriate local code official. Make sure that the type C drywall is continuous behind the stairwell, tub and shower enclosures, cabinets, built ins or any drop soffits or drop ceiling areas.
Firewall Penetrations All wire penetrations must be fire sealed No gas lines or waste pipes can run inside the firewall All plumbing penetrations must have U.L. approved collars and assembly listings
All Outlets in Firewall Must be 2 Hr UL Approved Electrical boxes must not exceed 100 square inches per 100 square feet
Wall Construction Review Two ways to frame the wall: Blocking staggered at 4.5 feet on each of the walls or diagonal bracing between walls Continuous type C drywall must be installed. One layer of type C drywall must be installed prior to application of insulation. Minimum gap between the framed walls is 1 inch. 4.6 lbs./ft. 3 tested Nu-Wool insulation density.
Floor-Ceiling Assembly There is no ASTM test for this area of the wall system. There is no third party testing facility to ensure an hourly rating. The builder/architect doesn t need to change anything they are specifying right now.
Floor-Ceiling Assemblies Perpendicular floor joists. (Rim & Band Joist application) Attic, floor-ceiling assembly, and foundation details will vary. Two layers of Type X drywall must extend from the bottom of the top plate on the lower wall and extended up to the top of the bottom plate on the upper wall (area circled). 5/8" GYP. BD.
