Jamaica is one of the largest islands in the West Indies with a population of 2.7 million. The economy of Jamaica is based on a range of minerals such as bauxite, oil, agricultural products and some manufacturing. It has suffered from slow growth, debt and high unemployment over a long period. Tourism is important for the Jamaican economy as it generates taxes, employment and income. It has help increase development within Jamaica. Why is Jamaica a suitable country to invest in a tourism economy for? 1) There are many beautiful beaches which attracts tourists. 2) It has a warm sunny climate ideal for holidays. 3) It has a rich cultural heritage that tourists enjoy learning about. 4) Jamaica has good international air communications and is a hub for cruise ships. Disadvantages of Tourism in Jamaica Jobs in tourism are seasonal so Jamaicans do not have secure jobs in the industry Only the northern coast of Jamaica has benefitted from investment. Other areas remain poor with limited resources and facilities. 2
